12 años de esclavitud (2012)
Es la adaptación a la gran pantalla de libro de mismo nombre escrito por Solomon Northup en 1853 (protagonista) y adaptado posteriormente en varias versiones. Fue filmada en el 2012 y estrenada a principios del 2013. Trata acerca de los padecimientos de un hombre negro nacido libre, quien durante una entrevista de trabajo es secuestrado y vendido como esclavo, por lo que trabajó 12 años en las plantaciones de Luisiana (EE UU) desde 1841 hasta 1853. Fue producida y dirigida por Steve McQueen, protagonizada por Chiwetel Ejiofor como Solomon Northup. El reparto estuvo integrado por Lupita Nyong'o, Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Paul Dano, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Giamatti, Sarah Paulson, y Alfre Woodard.
¿Por qué me gustó “12 años de esclavitud”? definitivamente, es una película que narra de manera genial los padecimientos de los esclavos negros en el continente americano, desde la subasta en el mercado hasta los tratos inhumanos recibidos, que incluían el trabajo forzado de cultivo en grandes plantaciones, mantenimiento, limpieza, hasta las salvajes golpizas, asesinatos y hasta servicios sexuales que tuvieron que realizar algunas mujeres.
También se puede apreciar cómo los niños eran arrancados de sus madres esclavizadas puesto que eran considerados una propiedad o mercancía de sus amos, sin ningún tipo de amor o respeto por la condición humana.
Cuando vi esta película, a principios de 2013 comentaba que, sin duda, merecía ganar el premio Oscar por lo impecable del guion y las magistrales actuaciones, y así fue. Destaco la insuperable participación de Lupita Nyong'o en el papel de Patsey, una esclava que era violada por su amo y maltratada por la esposa debido a esta situación y por la que obtuvo el Oscar a mejor actriz de reparto; y de su protagonista Chiwetel Ejiofor en la interpretación de Solomon Northup renombrado como “Platt” durante su secuestro.
“12 años de esclavitud” constituye esa película que recomiendo ver a mis estudiantes de Historia para acercarlos a la comprensión del fenómeno del esclavismo en América, que con algunas variantes en distintos territorios, pueden sintetizarse en trabajo forzado, maltrato y violación.
Libertador (2013)
Fue una película venezolano-española filmada en 7 países, cuyo costo de producción fue aproximadamente de 50 millones de dólares. Fue estrenada en el 2013 y dirigida por Alberto Arbelo, con las actuaciones de Édgar Ramírez como protagonista, Juana Acosta, Iwan Rheon, Gary Lewis, Danny Huston y María Valverde en el reparto.
Está basada en la vida y obra de Simón Bolívar, libertador de 5 países. La película se circunscribe a finales del siglo XVIII y principios del XIX momento en el que Hispanoamérica se encontraba bajo la dominación española. Su protagonista, un mantuano (blanco criollo) rico de cuna alza la voz en contra del colonialismo.
“Libertador” ha sido mi película más esperada, puesto que admiro profundamente a Simón Bolívar, el personaje histórico más famoso del mundo en el siglo XIX y aún conocido, a dos siglos de sus acciones, por lo que me hace sentir orgullosa de ser venezolana.
En ella, se presenta la vida personal de Bolívar: su infancia, la influencia de un maestro en su formación y la muerte de su esposa, elementos que se entretejieron para generar en él los deseos de liberar a Venezuela e Hispanoamérica del dominio español. Se nota un Bolívar que aprende de la Guerra, por lo que va mejorando sus estrategias y logra unificar al Ejército Patriota en Venezuela, responsable de la liberación de la nación y de otros territorios de Sur del continente americano.
Esta película me gusta porque presenta a Bolívar como el gran hombre que fue, con una visión de libertad, igualdad, justicia y unidad adelantadas para su época. Hay algunos acontecimientos históricos que no fueron exactos, como su muerte, porque dejan al espectador con la sensación de que fue asesinado; sin embargo se entiende que es una adaptación cinematográfica, no el acontecimiento literal.
Un sueño posible (2009)
Es una película basada en el libro “El punto ciego: la evolución de un juego” escrita por Michael Lewis. Contó con la dirección de John Lee Hancock y las actuaciones estelares de Sandra Bullock y Quinton Aaron.
En ella se narra la historia de vida de Michael Jerome Oher, un jugador de fútbol americano, transcurrida entre el último año de la secundaria y algunos recuerdos de su infancia. Se presenta a un adolescente muy alto y robusto, quien creció en medio de un ambiente violento y con una madre biológica adicta a las drogas, pero en lugar de copiar estas conductas, prefirió cerrar los ojos y ser introvertido.
Fue un estudiante muy callado quien no trabajaba en clases, pero que fueron pasando de un año al otro hasta llegar al último, en el que, gracias a un amigo que lo apreciaba, obtuvo una beca en un prestigioso colegio. Allí conoce a Leigh Anne Tuohy, cuyos hijos estudian en el mismo colegio y quien lo acoge en su hogar como a un hijo más.
La trama tocó mis fibras de mamá. La actuación de Sandra Bullock fue impecable, transmitiendo de manera brillante los sentimientos maternos de una mujer ante un adolescente que se encuentra desprotegido, de hecho ganó el premio Oscar como mejor actriz por esa interpretación. Es una historia con un final feliz que muestra cómo una familia cambió la vida de un joven, quien se convirtió en uno de los jugadores más destacados de Fútbol americano.

It is the adaptation to the big screen of the book of the same name written by Solomon Northup in 1853 (protagonist) and later adapted in several versions. It was filmed in 2012 and released in early 2013. It is about the sufferings of a free-born black man, who during a job interview is kidnapped and sold into slavery, for which he worked 12 years in the plantations of Louisiana (USA) from 1841 to 1853. It was produced and directed by Steve McQueen, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor as Solomon Northup. The cast included Lupita Nyong'o, Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Paul Dano, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Giamatti, Sarah Paulson, and Alfre Woodard.
Why did I like "12 Years a Slave"? Definitely, it is a movie that narrates in a great way the sufferings of black slaves in the American continent, from the auction in the market to the inhuman treatment received, which included forced labor of cultivation in large plantations, maintenance, cleaning, to the savage beatings, murders and even sexual services that some women had to perform.
You can also see how children were torn away from their enslaved mothers since they were considered property or merchandise of their masters, without any love or respect for the human condition.
When I saw this film in early 2013 I commented that it undoubtedly deserved to win the Oscar award for the impeccable script and the masterful performances, and it did. I highlight the unsurpassed participation of Lupita Nyong'o in the role of Patsey, a slave who was raped by her master and mistreated by his wife because of this situation and for which she won the Oscar for best supporting actress; and of its protagonist Chiwetel Ejiofor in the interpretation of Solomon Northup renamed as "Platt" during his kidnapping.
"12 Years a Slave" constitutes that film that I recommend watching to my History students to bring them closer to the understanding of the phenomenon of slavery in America, which with some variants in different territories, can be synthesized in forced labor, mistreatment and rape.
Libertador (2013)
It was a Venezuelan-Spanish film shot in 7 countries, whose production cost was approximately 50 million dollars. It was released in 2013 and directed by Alberto Arbelo, starring Édgar Ramírez, Juana Acosta, Iwan Rheon, Gary Lewis, Danny Huston and María Valverde in the cast.
It is based on the life and work of Simón Bolívar, liberator of 5 countries. The film is set in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when Latin America was under Spanish domination. Its protagonist, a wealthy mantuano (white Creole), raises his voice against colonialism.
"Libertador" has been my most awaited film, since I deeply admire Simón Bolívar, the most famous historical character in the world in the 19th century and still known, two centuries after his actions, which makes me feel proud to be Venezuelan.
In it, Bolivar's personal life is presented: his childhood, the influence of a teacher in his formation and the death of his wife, elements that intertwined to generate in him the desire to liberate Venezuela and Latin America from Spanish rule. It shows a Bolivar who learns from the war, so he improves his strategies and manages to unify the Patriot Army in Venezuela, responsible for the liberation of the nation and other territories in the South of the American continent.
I like this film because it presents Bolivar as the great man he was, with a vision of freedom, equality, justice and unity ahead of his time. There are some historical events that were not accurate, such as his death, because they leave the viewer with the feeling that he was assassinated; however it is understood that it is a film adaptation, not the literal event.
A Possible Dream (2009)
It is a film based on the book "The Blind Spot: The Evolution of a Game" written by Michael Lewis. It was directed by John Lee Hancock and starred Sandra Bullock and Quinton Aaron.
It tells the life story of Michael Jerome Oher, an American soccer player, between his senior year of high school and some childhood memories. It presents a very tall and robust teenager, who grew up in a violent environment and with a biological mother addicted to drugs, but instead of copying these behaviors, he preferred to close his eyes and be introverted.
He was a very quiet student who didn't work in class, but that went from one year to the next until the last one, in which, thanks to a friend who appreciated him, he obtained a scholarship in a prestigious college. There he met Leigh Anne Tuohy, whose children attend the same school and who welcomed him into her home as her own son.
The plot pulled at my mom heartstrings. Sandra Bullock's performance was impeccable, brilliantly conveying the maternal feelings of a woman to a teenager who is unprotected, in fact she won the Oscar for best actress for that performance. It is a story with a happy ending that shows how a family changed the life of a young man, who became one of the most outstanding American Football players.
