El universo de Karate Kid acompañado ahora por el de Cobra Kai ha llegado a su final, por lo menos momentáneamente. Hace como 6-7 años que llegó esta serie a Netflix trayendo con ella un golpe de nostalgia para todos aquellos que fuimos y somos aún fanáticos de la franquicia desde los años 90. Particularmente recuerdo aquella primera temporada que cuando la terminé de ver estaba muy emocionado porque era volver a ver a los personajes originales de las películas. Conforme fueron pasando las temporadas las sorpresas no paraban en cuanto a los "reencuentros", siempre aparecía alguien para avivar esa llama nostálgica, incluso en esta parte final; increíble pero cierto, siempre quedaba algún actor por ahí.
The Karate Kid universe accompanied now by the Cobra Kai universe has come to an end, at least momentarily. It's been about 6-7 years since this series arrived on Netflix bringing with it a hit of nostalgia for all of us who were and still are fans of the franchise since the 90s. I particularly remember that first season that when I finished watching it I was very excited because it was seeing the original characters from the movies again. As the seasons went by the surprises did not stop in terms of “reunions”, someone always appeared to fan that nostalgic flame, even in this final part; incredible but true, there was always an actor around.
Personalmente creo que esta serie tuvo una temporada de más, se alargó innecesariamente y si a esto le sumamos la típica estrategia de Netflix de soltar los capítulos a cuentagotas pues la espera se hace más tediosa y pesada. Ejemplo de ello es esta última temporada, la sexta, que cuenta con 15 episodios y que fueron sacados de 5 en 5, desde julio hasta el día de ayer. Esta parte final trata del famoso torneo mundial Sekai Taikai el cual será usado para limar asperezas, resolver asuntos del pasado, buscar redención, como digo en el título, y básicamente como una forma para demostrar cosas a los seres queridos y de manera introspectiva. Cobra Kai siempre se ha caracterizado por esto, por generar problemas de donde no los hay y después resolverlos sobre el tatami.
Personally I think this series had one season too many, it dragged on unnecessarily and if we add to this the typical Netflix strategy of releasing the chapters in dribs and drabs, the wait becomes more tedious and heavy. An example of this is this last season, the sixth, which has 15 episodes and that were released 5 by 5, from July until yesterday. This final part deals with the famous Sekai Taikai world tournament which will be used to iron out differences, resolve past issues, seek redemption, as I say in the title, and basically as a way to show things to loved ones and introspectively. Cobra Kai has always been characterized by this, to generate problems where there are none and then solve them on the tatami.

Cobra Kai nunca se trató de Daniel ni del señor Miyagi, siempre fue en torno a Johnny, de cómo en aquel 1984 no pudo ganar el campeonato y de todo lo que significó e influyó eso en su vida de adulto. Él siempre quiso esa venganza, quiso demostrar que no era el fracasado que todo el mundo decía y pensaba que era y después de muchos altibajos y piedras en el camino de cierta manera la consigue. Pero no venganza como tal, más bien redención. El gran ganador de esta historia fue él quien termina con una familia perfecta, con una buena relación con casi todos los que lo rodean y con algo que pasa en este torneo que lo marcará para siempre.
Cobra Kai was never about Daniel or Mr. Miyagi, it was always about Johnny, about how in 1984 he couldn't win the championship and everything that meant and influenced his adult life. He always wanted that revenge, he wanted to prove that he was not the loser that everyone said and thought he was and after many ups and downs and stones in the way, in a way he gets it. But not revenge as such, rather redemption. The great winner of this story was he who ends up with a perfect family, with a good relationship with almost everyone around him and with something that happens in this tournament that will mark him forever.
Como siempre sucede en Cobra Kai todo el tiempo pasaba algo, siempre había un drama exagerado o ocurría un plot twist que daba la vuelta a toda la situación, esta temporada y sobretodo estos últimos 5 capítulos no fueron la excepción. En este final ocurre algo importante, un hecho que por lo menos yo no me esperaba y que por algún extraño motivo no se habla de ello. Algunos lo podrán ver como un cierre pero a mi me sigue generando algo de curiosidad. Creería que eso fue lo único que "negativo" que puedo decir ya que en términos generales la serie finaliza de una manera muy redonda para todos. Siento que hubo una evolución en casi todos los personajes tanto física como mental, la madurez se nota mucho que llegó al Valle.
As it always happens in Cobra Kai something happened all the time, there was always an exaggerated drama or a plot twist that turned the whole situation around, this season and especially these last 5 chapters were no exception. In this finale something important happens, a fact that at least I did not expect and that for some strange reason is not talked about. Some may see it as a closure but to me it still generates some curiosity. I would think that was the only “negative” thing I can say since in general terms the series ends in a very rounded way for everyone. I feel that there was an evolution in almost all the characters both physically and mentally, maturity is very noticeable that came to the Valley.

Otro punto a favor es que siempre, incluso en su escena final, las referencias al pasado está presentes. Esa unión entre las películas y la serie fue de las cosas que más me gustó, nunca dejaron los orígenes atrás; ahí estuvo la magia durante toda la serie. No se si lo saben pero a mediados de este año sale Karate Kid: Legends, una nueva película de la franquicia con Jackie Chan y Ralph Macchio como protagonistas. Sería extraordinario que esta serie sea canon y que veamos a algunos de estos personajes volver al cine con este nuevo film. Pienso que la vuelta de Macchio fue precisamente gracias a Cobra Kai por lo que no sería descabellado ver a un Johnny de regreso.
Another point in favor is that always, even in the final scene, references to the past are present. That union between the movies and the series was one of the things I liked the most, they never left the origins behind; that's where the magic was throughout the series. I don't know if you know, but in the middle of this year Karate Kid: Legends is coming out, a new movie of the franchise with Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio as the main characters. It would be extraordinary for this series to be canon and for us to see some of these characters return to the movies with this new film. I think Macchio's return was precisely thanks to Cobra Kai so it would not be unreasonable to see a Johnny back.
Se terminó una gran serie, otro éxito de Netflix. Un tanto larga, con problemas en exceso y a veces hasta infantiles pero eso no le quita el gran impacto que ha generado. Al final de la serie le doy un 7.5/10. Era más o menos lo esperado. Buenas peleas, es verdad que a veces se veía muy evidente los dobles, esos detalles no pueden pasar pero en general muy cool todo. Veremos si de acá no sale algún spin-off o alguna aparición en la película que les mencioné antes.
A great series is over, another Netflix hit. A bit long, with problems in excess and sometimes even childish but that does not detract from the great impact it has generated. At the end of the series I give it a 7.5/10. It was more or less what I expected. Good fights, it's true that sometimes the doubles were very evident, those details can't happen but in general everything was very cool. Let's see if it doesn't come out as a spin-off or an appearance in the movie I mentioned before.
