Un oso que está hasta las nubes de cocaína y que producto de eso empieza a hacer de las suyas en un bosque. Si esto hubiese salido de la cabeza de algún director o productor se le llamaría o genio o una persona totalmente loca pero la realidad es que ninguna de las dos es el caso para esta película. Nuestro protagonista de hoy es producto de una historia real, sin tanta ficción como en el film pero si, ya que por allá a mediados de los ochenta cuando la cocaína estaba a la orden del día en los Estados Unidos un oso negro fue encontrado muerto por una sobredosis de esta droga después de haberla ingerido al encontrársela en el medio del bosque. Todo es muy surrealista lo se pero así pasó y pues que mejor forma de recordar aquella noticia que haciéndola un film, uno que tiene sus cositas.
A bear who is up to his eyeballs in cocaine and as a result starts to go on a rampage in a forest. If this had come out of the head of a director or producer, he would be called either a genius or a totally crazy person, but the reality is that neither is the case for this film. Our protagonist today is the product of a true story, without as much fiction as in the film but yes, back in the mid-eighties when cocaine was the order of the day in the United States a black bear was found dead from an overdose of this drug after having ingested it when he found it in the middle of the forest. It's all very surreal, I know, but that's how it happened and what better way to remember that news than making it into a film, one that has its own little things.
Honestamente no esperaba absolutamente nada de esta película, vengo con el precedente de Sharknado por nombrar una en donde los animales se convierten en series irracionales y maquinas de matar. La cosa es que a pesar de saber con que te vas a encontrar, porque créeme que lo sabes, el film termina siendo extrañamente entretenido porque en él vemos una historia llena de una comedia tonta, muy de los 90, principios de los 2000 pero con un toque gore y violento que la verdad me sorprendió, no pensé que ese recurso fuera lo que para mi salvó a esta película de ser un fracaso total. Y es a que ver, siempre he dicho que cuando estos detalles son bien usados el resultado puede ser muy cool, en Cocaine Bear honestamente estuvo decente. Pero bueno, vayamos y hablemos un poco más de este muy raro film.
I honestly expected absolutely nothing from this movie, I come with the precedent of Sharknado to name one where animals become irrational series and killing machines. The thing is that despite knowing what you are going to find, because believe me you know, the film ends up being strangely entertaining because in it we see a story full of a silly comedy, very 90's, early 2000's but with a gore and violent touch that actually surprised me, I didn't think that resource was what for me saved this film from being a total failure. I've always said that when these details are well used the result can be very cool, in Cocaine Bear it was honestly decent. But well, let's go ahead and talk a little more about this very weird film.

La historia es simple y directa. Como ya les dije por allá en 1985 un narcotraficante iba en una avioneta con grandes cantidades de droga encima, al querer saltar de ella las cosas no salen como esperaba y terminado cayendo al vacío ya que se dio un golpe, quedó inconsciente y por tanto el paracaídas nunca lo usó. Toda la droga que él llevaba quedó dispersa en el bosque siendo presa fácil para nuestro amigo de 500 kilos quien decidió consumirla toda. Como es de esperarse, o no, este oso se convirtió en una maquina de matar, como si ya no lo fuera y al estar fuera de si y bajo los efectos de la cocaína comenzó a arrasar con cualquier persona que se le cruzara por el camino convirtiendo el bosque en una zona de cacería y muerte.
The story is simple and straightforward. As I told you back in 1985, a drug dealer was in a small plane with large quantities of drugs on him, when he wanted to jump out of it, things did not go as expected and he ended up falling into the void because he was knocked unconscious and therefore he never used the parachute. All the drugs he was carrying were scattered in the forest being easy prey for our friend of 500 kilos who decided to consume it all. As expected, or not, this bear became a killing machine, as if he was not already one, and being out of his mind and under the effects of cocaine, he began to devastate anyone who crossed his path, turning the forest into a hunting and killing zone.
Pero, que personas? - a los alrededores de dicho bosque habían varios grupos de personas; un par de niños/adolescentes, los narcotraficantes que estaban buscando la droga, las autoridades que se enteraron del asunto y un trio de delincuentes que son los típicos tontos que no saben ni agarrar un cuchillo. Con todos ubicados la trama no tiene mucha ciencia, es tratar de que este oso no te mate porque si y esto es algo que me llamó poderosamente la atención; esta bestia de casi media tonelada era más sigilosa que Spiderman y más rápida que la luz, era el propio ninja de 500 kilos. Cuando yo veía eso no sabía si reírme, quedarme contrariado o simplemente dejarme llevar y disfrutar de lo absurdo y es que esta película es eso, un compilado de cosas sin sentido pero que te enganchan de una manera bárbara.
But which people? - around the forest there were several groups of people; a couple of children/teenagers, the drug dealers who were looking for the drugs, the authorities who found out about it and a trio of criminals who are the typical fools who don't even know how to hold a knife. With everyone in place the plot doesn't have much science, it's about trying to make sure this bear doesn't kill you just because and this is something that caught my attention; this beast of almost half a ton was stealthier than Spiderman and faster than light, it was the 500 kilos ninja himself. When I saw that, I didn't know whether to laugh, stay disgruntled or just let myself go and enjoy the absurdity and that's what this movie is, a compilation of nonsense but that hooks you in a barbaric way.

La película es una comedia y como tal tienes que verla, no es una en donde el sentido común predomine así que al igual que yo no traten de buscarle la lógica ni explicación a las cosas, simplemente disfruten y ya está. A mi por momentos se me pareció bastante a Scary Movie en lo que a las situaciones que veíamos se refiere, esas típicas interacciones entre los personajes que rayaban en los típicos clichés "cómicos", sus formas de ser, expresiones y es que hasta los mismos hechos en donde la sangre, las heridas y toda esta violencia desmedida que a veces se ve daba bastante risa o gracia a pesar de que en efecto es muy gráfica y directa.
The movie is a comedy and as such you have to see it, it is not one where common sense prevails so like me do not try to look for logic or explanation to things, just enjoy it and that's it. To me at times it was quite similar to Scary Movie in terms of the situations we saw, those typical interactions between the characters that bordered on the typical "comic" clichés, their ways of being, expressions and even the events themselves where the blood, wounds and all this excessive violence that is sometimes seen was quite funny or laughable even though it is indeed very graphic and direct.
Es loco pero el suspenso o por lo menos la tensión es algo que también está muy bien manejada, por momentos sientes esa desesperación del no saber por donde va a saltar este oso ninja para sorprenderte con movimientos muy humanizados y es que hay escenas en donde de verdad el oso actúa cual adicto que está todo doblado en un callejón. Esto nos lleva a decir que el oso a pesar de lo anterior es muy realista, más allá de sus movimientos nunca se ve como uno de ficción ni de mentira, la tecnología acá cumplió bien porque nos entregó un buen animal, sobre todo en los close up se ve bastante bien logrado todo.
It's crazy but the suspense or at least the tension is something that is also very well handled, at times you feel that desperation of not knowing where this ninja bear is going to jump to surprise you with very humanized movements and there are scenes where the bear really acts like an addict who is all bent in an alley. This leads us to say that the bear despite the above is very realistic, beyond his movements never looks like one of fiction or lie, the technology here fulfilled well because it gave us a good animal, especially in the close up looks pretty well achieved everything.

Y por último tenemos todo esa parte que a mi criterio fue la que salvó este film. La violencia de la que somos espectadores acá es de lo que más disfruté, hay una escena que se lleva a cabo en una ambulancia que la verdad es oro puro, ocurre de todo de una forma muy rápida pero el resultado final es increíble. El elemento de mutilaciones, fracturas expuestas, desmembramientos, etc, son cosas que muy fácilmente puede que queden mal y terribles a la vista; afortunadamente y por lo menos para mi, en este film no fue el caso. Creo que el punto clave es que no hay exageraciones, por lo general muchas veces se cree que más es mejor cuando la realidad es que no es así; todo en su justa medida y que esté bien logrado. Que ojo, esto lo digo dentro del entorno de lo absurdo, y es que seguimos dentro de unas situaciones insólitas.
And finally we have all that part that in my opinion was the one that saved this film. The violence that we are spectators of here is what I enjoyed the most, there is a scene that takes place in an ambulance that is pure gold, everything happens in a very fast way but the end result is incredible. The element of mutilations, exposed fractures, dismemberments, etc, are things that can very easily look bad and terrible to the eye; fortunately and at least for me, in this film it was not the case. I think the key point is that there are no exaggerations, usually many times it is believed that more is better when the reality is that it is not so; everything in its right measure and that is well achieved. I say this within the environment of the absurd, and that is that we are still in some unusual situations.
Los personajes. Tenemos a Ray Liotta, probablemente en una de sus últimas películas antes de fallecer, como uno de los jefes de la droga. Una persona terrible, sin escrúpulos y sumamente egoísta. También está Keri Russell, la famosa Felicity, como una mamá que está desesperada porque su hija se perdió en el bosque; sin más, nada relevante que aportar. Y es que esta película no es para analizar actuaciones ni personajes, no va de eso porque su trama no se centra tanto en ellos sino en la mera supervivencia que ellos tienen que emplear para librarse de este oso adicto. Pero bueno, repito lo dicho antes, hay actuaciones tontas, con personajes muy particulares que al final encajan muy bien en lo que es realmente este film.
The characters. We have Ray Liotta, probably in one of his last films before passing away, as one of the drug bosses. A terrible person, unscrupulous and extremely selfish. There is also Keri Russell, the famous Felicity, as a mom who is desperate because her daughter is lost in the woods; nothing else, nothing relevant to contribute. And this movie is not to analyze performances or characters, it is not about that because its plot is not so much focused on them but on the mere survival that they have to use to get rid of this addicted bear. But well, I repeat what I said before, there are silly performances, with very particular characters that in the end fit very well in what this film really is.

A este film yo le pongo un 7.5/10 porque fue más de que yo esperaba. Tiene buenos efectos, el oso es bastante creíble y realista, la violencia y todo lo gore está en su punto, no te aburres viéndola porque además es un film corto, va a lo suyo y ya, no busca adornarse ni nada por el estilo. Hay suspenso, tensión, cosas increíblemente absurdas que te terminan sacando una carcajada y ese elemento de comedia que suaviza un poco la matanza de este oso. Tiene una duración de hora y media lo cual se hace mucho más sencillo verla. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.
I give this film a 7.5/10 because it was more than I expected. It has good effects, the bear is quite believable and realistic, the violence and all the gore is just right, you don't get bored watching it because it's a short film, it goes about its business and that's it, it doesn't try to embellish or anything like that. There is suspense, tension, incredibly absurd things that end up making you laugh and that element of comedy that softens a little the killing of this bear. It's an hour and a half long which makes it much easier to watch. I'll leave the trailer below.
