Hace unos días buscando que cosas nuevas ver me topé con esta serie nueva en Netflix de origen nórdico, más en especifico de Islandia, que aparentemente era una historia llena de suspenso y misterio y como la verdad es que soy un poco fanático de esos géneros pues me decidí a echarle un ojo y ver de que se trata realmente.
A few days ago looking for new things to watch I came across this new series on Netflix of Nordic origin, more specifically from Iceland, which apparently was a story full of suspense and mystery and as the truth is that I'm a bit of a fan of those genres I decided to take a look and see what it's really about.
Hacía mucho tiempo que no veía algo en Netflix que de verdad me llamara la atención y me gustara tanto como lo hizo esta serie, al punto de que la vi en tan solo dos días. Claro que la serie es corta, consta de 8 capítulos con una duración de entre 45-50 minutos cada uno, pero la razón principal fue la manera en como desde los primeros instantes te comienza a generar una curiosidad muy grande. Veamos entonces de que se trata esta inquietante historia.
It had been a long time since I had seen something on Netflix that really caught my attention and I liked it as much as this series did, to the point that I watched it in just two days. Of course the series is short, it consists of 8 chapters with a duration of between 45-50 minutes each, but the main reason was the way in which from the first moments it begins to generate a very big curiosity. Let's see then what this disturbing story is about.

Katla!
Lo primero que debemos de saber es que Katla es un volcán ubicado en Islandia pero también es el pilar de esta historia que se encarga de mostrarnos el miedo de una forma totalmente nueva porque se basa en lo que no podemos ver, es decir, en la incertidumbre. Claramente y si la llegaron a ver se van a dar cuenta de los grandes parecidos que hay con "DARK", no son iguales pero a nivel de estética y terror si hay ciertas similitudes.
The first thing we should know is that Katla is a volcano located in Iceland but it is also the pillar of this story that is responsible for showing us the fear in a totally new way because it is based on what we can not see, that is, in uncertainty. Clearly, and if you have seen it, you will realize the great similarities with "DARK", they are not the same but at the level of aesthetics and terror there are certain similarities.
Como les dije, Katla cuenta con 8 episodios en donde poco a poco y de una manera un tanto lenta para algunos nos va llevando a la búsqueda de todas las respuestas necesarias para la resolución del gran misterio en el que se basa la historia. La cosa es que esa lentitud hace que la experiencia se haga más escalofriante y por tanto nos mantenga en vilo.
As I said, Katla has 8 episodes where little by little and in a slow way for some, it takes us to the search for all the answers necessary for the resolution of the great mystery on which the story is based. The thing is that this slowness makes the experience more chilling and therefore keeps us in suspense.

El tema es que Katla, el volcán, hace erupción y lo que aparentemente parecía como un fenómeno natural y común se termina convirtiendo en una pesadilla un tanto extraña. Y es extraña porque la comunidad del pequeño pueblo de Vik comenzarán a presenciar grandes misterios que el mismo hielo les irá develando.
The thing is that Katla, the volcano, erupts and what apparently seemed like a natural and common phenomenon ends up becoming a somewhat strange nightmare. And it is strange because the community of the small town of Vik will begin to witness great mysteries that the ice itself will unveil.
Un pueblo en el que no quedan muchas personas ya que por la misma erupción muchos de sus habitantes han decidido irse dejando solo a un grupo de no más de 20 personas. Lo otro que hay que mencionar que Katla lleva más de un año siendo un volcán activo por lo que el terror y el suspenso parece ser una cosa de nunca acabar.
A town in which there are not many people left because of the same eruption many of its inhabitants have decided to leave leaving only a group of no more than 20 people. The other thing to mention is that Katla has been an active volcano for more than a year so the terror and suspense seems to be a never ending thing.

Lo que más me gustó de esta serie es la combinación de tres géneros: suspenso, terror y ciencia ficción. En muchas ocasiones cuando se unen estas tres "fuerzas" por lo general el resultado no es tan bueno, afortunadamente no es el caso con esta historia porque esa unión nos lleva por un viaje en donde somos capaces de experimentar distintos tipo de miedo.
What I liked most about this series is the combination of three genres: suspense, horror and science fiction. On many occasions when these three "forces" come together the result is usually not so good, fortunately this is not the case with this story because this union takes us on a journey where we are able to experience different types of fear.
Porque si la erupción de un volcán es un evento natural pero allí sucede algo más, algo siniestro que termina convirtiendo todo en algo sobrenatural. O no. Esa es la magia de esta serie y de ahí a que se parezca un poco a "Dark" y es que al final todo puede ser interpretativo según la forma de ver las cosas de cada quién.
Because if the eruption of a volcano is a natural event but something else happens there, something sinister that ends up turning everything into something supernatural. Or not. That's the magic of this series and that's why it's a bit like "Dark", because in the end everything can be interpreted according to each person's way of seeing things.

La serie es una joya en lo que a ambientación se refiere, filmada en los paisajes de Islandia le da un toque lúgubre además del uso de los grises y oscuros hacen que la historia cobre cierta vida y que realmente te atrape. Creo que lo más importante del éxito de Katla es sin duda el miedo a lo desconocido, al no saber que está pasando ni que va a pasar y sobre todo a la falta de respuestas. La mente humana siempre va a buscar el raciocinio por sobre todas las cosas pero en el pueblo de Vik eso no será posible.
The series is a gem as far as setting is concerned, filmed in the landscapes of Iceland gives it a gloomy touch plus the use of grays and darks make the story come to life and really grab you. I think the most important part of Katla's success is undoubtedly the fear of the unknown, of not knowing what is happening or what is going to happen and above all the lack of answers. The human mind is always going to seek reason above all things but in Vik's town that won't be possible.

En conclusión es una muy pero muy buena serie que me sorprendió bastante, creo que será de las grandes producciones de este 2021, es de esas series que prometen siempre y cuando la continúen con más temporadas. Y si no lo hacen pues también vale la pena, les aseguro que su tiempo no lo van a perder. Hay suspenso, terror, intriga, incertidumbre y en exceso misterio, buenas locaciones y fotografías y el casting a pesar de no conocer a nadie la verdad es que son actores de primera. In conclusion it is a very, very good series that surprised me a lot, I think it will be one of the great productions of this 2021, it is one of those series that promise as long as they continue it with more seasons. And if they don't, it is also worth it, I assure you that your time will not be wasted. There is suspense, terror, intrigue, uncertainty and mystery in excess, good locations and photographs and the casting despite not knowing anyone the truth is that they are first class actors.
