Lee Cronin es un director de cine irlandés que se caracteriza por su terror bien grafico, lleno de gore y escenas bien explicitas que no dejan indiferentes a nadie. Una de sus películas más sobresalientes y conocidas fue Evil Dead Rise, parte de una trilogia que se completará este año con Evil Dead Burn. Pero no solo Cronin estuvo en este film, también James Wan, un hombre que ha hecho varios títulos de terror de mucho nombre: la saga del conjuro, Maligno, Annabelle, etc. Y por si eso no fuera poco fue producida por Blumhouse. Pero, por qué digo esto? - pues porque uno pensaría que con semejantes nombres a cargo de una historia esta sería impresionante pero para mi estuvo muy lejos de eso.

One of his most outstanding and well-known films was Evil Dead Rise, part of a trilogy that will be completed this year with Evil Dead Burn. But Cronin wasn't the only one involved in this film; James Wan, a man who has directed several high-profile horror titles—The Conjuring series, Evil Dead, Annabelle, etc.—was also involved. And if that weren't enough, it was produced by Blumhouse. But why do I say this? Well, because one would think that with such names attached to a story, it would be impressive, but for me, it fell far short.
Tenemos a una familia que estaba viviendo en El Cairo ya que el papá es periodista y estaba trabajando por allá. Un día, su hija Katie desaparece sin dejar ningún tipo de rastro mientras ella estaba en el jardín de su casa hablando con alguien desconocido. Como es obvio comienza una busqueda que al final no lleva a ningún lado. Pasa el tiempo, unos 8 años más o menos, y esta familia volvió a los Estados Unidos, hicieron una vida nueva, tuvieron otra hija pero el recuerdo de Katie sigue intacto en sus mentes. Todo cambia cuando los padres reciben una llamada desde Egipto afirmando que su hija perdida había aparecido pero en un estado bastante más oscuro y desolador.
We have a family living in Cairo, as the father is a journalist working there. One day, their daughter Katie disappears without a trace while she's in their garden talking to someone unknown. Naturally, a search begins, but it ultimately leads nowhere. About eight years pass, and the family returns to the United States, starts a new life, and has another daughter, but the memory of Katie remains vivid. Everything changes when the parents receive a call from Egypt claiming their missing daughter has reappeared, but in a much darker and more desolate state.

Katie no era la misma, era un cuerpo sin alma; era un recipiente que albergaba algo mucho más siniestro y ancestral con un poder maligno inimaginable. A pesar de las claras pruebas y evidencias tanto físicas como de comportamiento que presentaba Katie de que algo no estaba bien los padres, como lo harían cualquiera, decidieron llevara a casa. Como era de esperarse las cosas nunca más fueron iguales, todo el ambiente y entorno cambió por completo convirtiendo una casa familiar en una pesadilla en donde pasan cosas muy raras. A partir de acá lo que veremos son los típicos episodios de posesiones que conocemos junto a la familia que está buscando entender que es lo que realmente está sucediendo, sobretodo el papá con la fibra periodista que tiene.
Katie wasn't the same; she was a soulless body, a vessel housing something far more sinister and ancient, possessing unimaginable malevolent power. Despite the clear physical and behavioral evidence that something was wrong with Katie, her parents, as anyone would, decided to take her home. As expected, things were never the same again. The entire atmosphere and environment changed completely, transforming a family home into a nightmare where bizarre things happen. From here on, we witness the typical possession stories we're familiar with, alongside the family trying to understand what's really going on, especially the father, with his journalistic instincts.
Todas las escenas en donde vemos el gore, la crudeza de lo que significa estar poseído por un demonio de unos 6 mil años de antigüedad están bien logradas, ese maquillaje es top, los efectos visuales están decentes, hay un par de cosas que no me gustaron pero en líneas generales es algo que se puede ver. Cual fue mi problema? - que nunca conecté con la parte del miedo. Los demonios y los niños se cree que son los elementos que más miedo dan en una película de terror y si los unes pues el resultado tendía que ser espectacular. Lo que me pasa es que nunca vi con ojos de miedo a Katie poseída, a lo mejor era la intención del director, seguir viendo la dulzura e inocencia de la niña debajo del físico malogrado pero la cosa es que nunca sentí el suspenso ni el terror como capaz otros si lo percibieron.
All the scenes depicting gore and the raw brutality of being possessed by a 6,000-year-old demon are well done. The makeup is top-notch, the visual effects are decent, and there are a couple of things I didn't like, but overall it's watchable. My problem? I never connected with the fear aspect. Demons and children are generally considered the most frightening elements in a horror film, and combining them should result in something spectacular. However, I never saw Katie possessed with fear. Perhaps that was the director's intention, to continue seeing the sweetness and innocence of the girl beneath her damaged body, but the fact is, I never felt the suspense or terror that others might have.

Al final la historia no solo es una posesión y ya, le suman el hecho de que es algo antiguo y que por medio rituales es que este demonio emigra de cuerpo en cuerpo. Que tenga que ver con la historia del Egipto antiguo es cool, por lo menos le dieron un significado y una profundidad al origen de todo. Las actuaciones estuvieron bien, nada que destacar, evidentemente el trabajo de la actriz que hace de la niña es bueno, hacer esos papeles no es fácil por lo que si, hay que reconocer eso. Es un film promedio, ideal para ver si estás buscando algo ligero de terror. Le doy un 5.5/10. Tenía muchas expectativas que al final no se cumplieron. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.
In the end, the story isn't just about possession; it's also about something ancient, and the demon migrates from body to body through rituals. The connection to ancient Egyptian history is cool; at least they gave meaning and depth to the origin of it all. The acting was fine, nothing remarkable, although the actress playing the little girl did a good job. Playing those roles isn't easy, so that deserves recognition. It's an average film, ideal if you're looking for something light on horror. I give it a 5.5/10. I had high expectations that ultimately weren't met. I've included the trailer below.
