Como una persona amante de la historia y sobretodo de la segunda guerra mundial ver series, documentales y películas que tengan que ver con lo sucedido en aquellos nefastos años siempre será un buen plan para mi. Después de que la Alemania nazi cayera era imposible que ese poco de hombres, todos escondidos y buscando escapar, quedaran impunes de todas las atrocidades que cometieron cuando estaban en el poder y es precisamente a raíz de esa necesidad de justicia que nace la idea de hacer un juicio, uno que estuviera precedido por las cuatro naciones que ayudaron a conseguir el fin del tercer Reich. Así pues fue en Nuremberg, lugar simbólico para los nazis, en donde se decidió hacer el cobro de la justicia para los monstruos que aún quedaban, que aún no se había suicidado.
As someone who loves history, especially World War II, watching series, documentaries, and films about those dark years is always a good plan for me. After Nazi Germany fell, it was impossible for those few men, all in hiding and trying to escape, to go unpunished for all the atrocities they committed while in power. It was precisely this need for justice that gave rise to the idea of a trial, one presided over by the four nations that helped bring about the end of the Third Reich. Thus, it was in Nuremberg, a symbolic place for the Nazis, that the decision was made to deliver justice to the monsters who remained, those who had not yet committed suicide.
Este film se centra en tres personajes. Hermann Göring, mano derecha de Hitler (Russell Crowe), Douglas Kelly, psiquiatra del ejército estadounidense (Rami Malek) y Robert H. Jackson, fiscal de USA (Michael Shannon). Basicamente la película narra los días previos del juicio, justo en el momento cuando Göring es capturado, Kelly es llamado para que lo estudie y analice en pro de sacar información para el juicio y la parte en como el fiscal Jackson es clave para que dicho juicio se lograra concretar. La trama es esa, ver como este psiquiatra logra ganarse la confianza de un ser completamente narcisista y enfermo de poder que incluso estando capturado soñaba y anhelaba mantener todo lo que Hitler alguna vez construyó.
This film focuses on three characters: Hermann Göring, Hitler's right-hand man (Russell Crowe); Douglas Kelly, a U.S. Army psychiatrist (Rami Malek); and Robert H. Jackson, the U.S. Attorney (Michael Shannon). The film essentially narrates the days leading up to the trial, specifically the moment Göring is captured. Kelly is called in to study and analyze him in order to gather information for the trial, and the role of Attorney Jackson in bringing the trial to fruition. The plot revolves around how this psychiatrist manages to gain the trust of a completely narcissistic and power-hungry individual who, even in captivity, dreamed of and longed to maintain everything Hitler had once built.

Porque si, hay mucha crítica hacia esta película por sobre su manera de mostrar los juicios cuando en la realidad lo que estamos viendo es la perspectiva del psiquiatra y de cómo logra adentrarse en la mente o dentro de la confianza de este alto cargo nazi. Pero claro, es que la película se llama "Nuremberg", como no se va a hablar del juicio como tal? - y si se habla pero de una manera muy superficial, no tiene la profundidad que pudiera ameritar. Tengo entendido que hay otro film, de hace unos cuantos años más atrás el cual es mucho más fiel al momento de relatar lo sucedido, de repente (Judgment at Nuremberg de 1961) pudiera ser algo más acertado. Todo esto no quiere decir que esta película sea mala, personalmente la disfruté mucho sobretodo por las actuaciones tanto de Crowe como de Malek.
Yes, there's a lot of criticism of this film regarding its portrayal of the trials, when in reality what we're seeing is the psychiatrist's perspective and how he manages to delve into the mind, or rather, the trust, of this high-ranking Nazi official. But of course, the film is called "Nuremberg"—how could it not address the trial itself? And it does, but in a very superficial way; it lacks the depth it deserves. I understand there's another film, from a few years earlier, that's much more faithful to the events; perhaps (Judgment at Nuremberg from 1961) might be a better choice. All this doesn't mean the film is bad; personally, I enjoyed it a lot, especially because of the performances of both Crowe and Malek.
Interpretar a un tipo como Göring no es fácil, de él se han dicho muchas cosas y como casi todos los nazi tenía una personalidad muy extravagante. El trabajo que hace Russell Crowe es bastante decente y bueno, al final debajo de esa personalidad desafiante y aparentemente dura y sin fisuras los nazi eran tipos profundamente cobardes y débiles de mente, de ahí a que muchos se terminaran suicidando, incluido Göring minutos antes de ser llevado a la horca. Por otro lado tenemos a Kelly, un psiquiatra el cual era bastante bueno en lo que hacía pero se acercó mucho al fuego que terminó quemándose; él ayudó mucho a conseguir información para "aniquilar" a Göring en el propio juicio. Creo que sin Kelly las cosas hubiesen sido diferentes. Lo que hace Malek con ese personaje también es bastante top.
Playing a man like Göring isn't easy. Many things have been said about him, and like almost all Nazis, he had a very eccentric personality. Russell Crowe's performance is quite decent and good. In the end, beneath that defiant, seemingly tough, and flawless facade, the Nazis were profoundly cowardly and weak-minded, which explains why so many ended up committing suicide, including Göring minutes before he was to be hanged. On the other hand, we have Kelly, a psychiatrist who was quite good at what he did but got too close to the fire and ended up getting burned. He was instrumental in obtaining information that ultimately led to Göring's downfall during the trial itself. I think things would have been different without Kelly. Malek's portrayal of that character is also top-notch.

En fin, la película es muy buena pero creo que es una versión muy simplista de lo que fueron realmente esos juicios. Hay varias inconsistencias por la forma en como plasmaron a ciertos personajes, el fiscal Jackson por ejemplo, que es una persona que dista mucho de como es mostrada en este film. La realidad es que, y vuelvo a repetir, estamos ante la perspectiva de Douglas Kelly y de como logró tratar a una persona como Göring; de ahí a la probable falta de profundidad del film. Ambientación, actuaciones, cinematografía; todo esto es un 10. A la película le doy un 7.5/10. Dura dos horas y media pero la verdad se pasan muy rápido. Si te gusta la historia y quieres ver buenas actuaciones, está más que recomendada. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.
In short, the film is very good, but I think it's a very simplistic version of what those trials were really like. There are several inconsistencies in the way they portrayed certain characters, Prosecutor Jackson for example, who is a very different person from how he's shown in this film. The reality is, and I repeat, we're seeing Douglas Kelly's perspective and how he dealt with someone like Göring; hence the film's likely lack of depth. The setting, acting, and cinematography are all top-notch. I give the film a 7.5/10. It's two and a half hours long, but they really fly by. If you like history and want to see good acting, it's highly recommended. I've included the trailer below.
