You might wake up one day and feel like watching the world go up in flames. It happens to me all too often. Today was one of those days when a pent-up inner rage felt like coming to the surface. I stayed as far away from social media as I could and didn't even plan to post anything. I try to isolate myself at home when I'm like this, to avoid things happening to me like the characters in the award-winning miniseries Beef.

It is one of the big winners of this awards season. Best miniseries , best actor, best actress , best direction and other awards have piled up. Many ignored it. Some didn't even pay attention to it. Even I put off watching it until it was unavoidable. All the awards it has received are well deserved. Although in the middle (there are ten episodes) it loses steam, it is a miniseries that will leave no one indifferent.

The plot is very simple but powerful. The trailer makes it clear from the beginning. Two people who are having a bad day or unpleasant moments, have an unfortunate encounter and bugle call in their vehicles. This most common inconvenience for everyone, will lead to a series of unfortunate events, where each will seek revenge on the other. Bringing out the ugliest side of these two characters, will they stop? How far will they be able to go? Will they be able to control their anger? Will they break the limits?

Puede que un día te levantes con ganas de ver el mundo en llamas. A mí me pasa muy a menudo. Hoy era uno de esos días en los que una rabia interior acumulada tenía ganas de salir a la superficie. Me alejé todo lo que pude de las redes sociales e incluso no pensaba publicar nada. Intento aislarme en casa cuando estoy así, para evitar que me pasen cosas como a los personajes de la premiada miniserie Beef.

Es una de las grandes triunfadoras de esta temporada de premios. Mejor miniserie , mejor actor, mejor actriz , mejor dirección y otros premios se han acumulado. Muchos la ignoraron. Algunos ni siquiera le prestaron atención. Incluso yo pospuse verla hasta que fue inevitable. Todos los premios que ha recibido son bien merecidos. Aunque a mitad (son diez episodios) pierde fuerza, es una miniserie que no dejará indiferente a nadie.

La trama es muy sencilla pero potente. El tráiler lo deja claro desde el principio. Dos personas que están pasando un mal día o momentos desagradables, tienen un desafortunado encuentro y toque de corneta en sus vehículos. Este inconveniente de lo más común para todos, desembocará en una serie de acontecimientos desafortunados, donde cada uno buscará vengarse del otro. Sacando el lado más feo de estos dos personajes, ¿se detendrán? ¿Hasta dónde serán capaces de llegar? ¿Podrán controlar su ira? ¿Romperán los límites?

How many times has someone honked their horn at you? How many times have you gotten angry at another driver and started swearing at them? Who hasn't pulled or had their finger pulled while driving? Driving in big cities is a bit stressful and it seems to make us angry. Many times I have cussed and other times I have been cussed at while driving. I have also seen cases of people who have ended up in a violent way after an altercation behind the wheel. It happens a lot.

The creator of the miniseries, Lee Sung Jin, and his team know how to make this gem of a story shine. Starting from a basic incident, they spin a narrative that delves into each of the characters, very human, with virtues, but mostly with flaws. It features a pair of lead actors who seem to have mutated, completely transforming themselves into these two empty souls.

Because it should be noted is the construction of the two main characters. Danny, a young Asian who used to work in construction or any maintenance work. He is frustrated by bad times in the economy, little work and also because of some mistakes in the past, his parents had to leave the country. He just wants to give them the land to build them a house. He lives with his younger brother, whom he controls and manipulates. Danny is determined to succeed by being a loser and may have to break some laws and cheat. Amy is an entrepreneur. She has a startup about to be acquired for a large sum of money. It is for her very happy, but the stress of these negotiations and a marital routine that has her bored, have made her repress all her anger, traumas and misfortunes. These two will have the misfortune to meet at the wrong time and prepare for the beginning of an endless war.

¿Cuántas veces te ha tocado alguien el claxon? ¿Cuántas veces te has enfadado con otro conductor y has empezado a insultarle? ¿Quién no ha sacado o le han sacado el dedo mientras conducía? Conducir en las grandes ciudades es un poco estresante y parece que eso hace que nos enfademos. Muchas veces he insultado y otras veces me han insultado mientras conducía. También he visto casos de personas que han acabado de forma violenta tras un altercado al volante. Ocurre a menudo.

El creador de la miniserie, Lee Sung Jin, y su equipo saben cómo hacer brillar esta joya de historia. Partiendo de un incidente básico, hilan una narración que profundiza en cada uno de los personajes, muy humanos, con virtudes, pero sobre todo con defectos. Cuenta con una pareja de actores protagonistas que parecen haber mutado, transformándose por completo en estas dos almas vacías.

Porque hay que destacar es la construcción de los dos personajes principales. Danny, un joven asiático que trabajaba en la construcción o en cualquier trabajo de mantenimiento. Está frustrado por los malos tiempos en la economía, poco trabajo y también por algunos errores en el pasado, sus padres tuvieron que abandonar el país. Sólo quiere darles el terreno para construirles una casa. Vive con su hermano pequeño, al que controla y manipula. Danny está decidido a triunfar siendo un perdedor y puede que tenga que infringir algunas leyes y hacer trampas. Amy es empresaria. Tiene una startup a punto de ser adquirida por una gran suma de dinero. Es para ella muy feliz, pero el estrés de estas negociaciones y una rutina matrimonial que la tiene aburrida, han hecho que reprima toda su rabia, traumas y desgracias. Estos dos tendrán la desgracia de encontrarse en el momento equivocado y prepararse para el comienzo de una guerra sin fin.

Don't think Danny and Amy are angels. One of them puts it very well: he's a bad person. We will be able to empathize with them, but as they do things and we discover more of their past life. We will realize that each of them deep down has a very desirable side. Today someone told me that there are no bad or good acts, but this couple do sosas that are not within my values. So they are a true and consistent reflection of the generation they play.

I wasn't in the mood to post anything. If I was stuck on someone like Amy, I probably would have committed a crime by now. But I ended up channeling my rage and it all seemed to pave the way for me to recommend this black comedy.

Beef is worth watching and I hope you never let your anger get the better of you. Let's learn a lesson from the miniseries. It's available on Netflix and I look forward to reading your comments.

No creas que Danny y Amy son ángeles. Uno de ellos lo expresa muy bien: es una mala persona. Podremos empatizar con ellos, pero a medida que hagan cosas y descubramos más de su vida pasada. Nos daremos cuenta de que cada uno de ellos en el fondo tiene un lado muy deseable. Hoy alguien me ha dicho que no hay actos malos o buenos, pero esta pareja hacen sosas que no estan dentro de mis valores. Por eso son un reflejo fiel y coherente de la generación que interpretan.

No estaba de humor para publicar nada. Si estuviera pegado a alguien como Amy, probablemente ya habría cometido un crimen. Pero acabé canalizando mi rabia y todo pareció allanarme el camino para recomendar esta comedia negra.

Merece la pena ver Beef y espero que nunca dejes que tu ira te domine. Aprendamos la lección de la miniserie. Está disponible en Netflix y espero leer tus comentarios.
