The Italian filmmaker boosted his career with two important works, but of totally opposite genres. On the one hand, the LGBTQ community loved him when he released Call Me by Your Name, a film I watched long afterward because of positive reviews and recommendations from community users.
But I took the filmmaker more seriously with the remake of Suspiria, which I believe I reviewed. The remake was good enough to put him on my list of filmmakers to watch and I was looking forward to his return to the horror genre with a new project, which is this film titled Bones and All, an adaptation of a novel.

Por un lado, la comunidad LGBTQ le adoró cuando estrenó Call Me by Your Name, película que vi mucho tiempo después por las críticas positivas y las recomendaciones de los usuarios de la comunidad.
Pero me tomé al cineasta más en serio con el remake de Suspiria, que creo que reseñé. Bones and All is a blend of two genres that the filmmaker has mastered very well in previous works, but here it may be a deciding factor in whether audiences love it or hate it.
Those expecting a horror work of impact may come away a bit disappointed, although the film has disturbing and beautifully gory scenes, which suit my particular tastes, it is the part of the plot that for those of us who love that genre we would like to explore more, but we will be left wanting.
I can already imagine many saying that this is another disappointment as a horror film, that the genre is dead and that good horror films are no longer being made, when great horror films have been released in recent years. Whether you haven't seen them or they are not to your taste is another thing altogether than making incorrect claims. I can refute all of those claims with substantiation, for anyone who wants to debate it.
The other genre that the film encompasses is romance, moreover, between teenage characters, who embark on a journey through deep America, so we could easily include that it also uses the road movie genre to tell the story. This is what will leave those looking for a 100% horror film with many minutes dedicated to the love story of the main characters and a road movie part where each of them will have to face their past and learn new lessons about their particular way of life.
Those who just want a love story will get a hard blow with the bloody scenes, I know there are very sensitive audiences who may find those scenes unpleasant. This is where the film's big problem lies, it doesn't end up choosing a path for its story, which won't leave either horror or romance fans happy. I can only tell you that the LGBTQ community will be happy with a scene of Chalamet with another actor, but they will have to put up with other disturbing parts.
Bones and All es una mezcla de dos géneros que el cineasta ha dominado muy bien en trabajos anteriores, pero aquí puede ser un factor decisivo para que el público la ame o la odie.
Quien espere una obra de terror de impacto puede salir un poco decepcionado, aunque la película tiene escenas inquietantes y bellamente sangrientas, que se adaptan a mis gustos particulares, es la parte de la trama que para los amantes de ese género nos gustaría explorar más, pero nos quedaremos con las ganas.
Ya me imagino a muchos diciendo que es otra decepción como película de terror, que el género está muerto y que ya no se hacen buenas películas de terror, cuando se han estrenado grandes películas de terror en los últimos años. Que no las hayan visto o no sean de su gusto, es otra cosa muy distinta a hacer afirmaciones incorrectas. Puedo rebatir todas esas afirmaciones con fundamento, para quien quiera debatirlo.
El otro género que abarca la película es el romance, además, entre personajes adolescentes, que se embarcan en un viaje por la América profunda, por lo que fácilmente podríamos incluir que también utiliza el género de la road movie para contar la historia. Esto es lo que dejará a los que busquen una película 100% de terror con muchos minutos dedicados a la historia de amor de los protagonistas y una parte de road movie donde cada uno de ellos tendrá que enfrentarse a su pasado y aprender nuevas lecciones sobre su particular forma de vida.
Aquellos que sólo quieran una historia de amor, recibirán un duro golpe con las escenas sangrientas, sé que hay público muy sensible que puede encontrar desagradables esas escenas. Aquí es donde radica el gran problema de la película, no termina de elegir un camino para su historia, que no dejará contentos ni a los fans del terror ni a los del romance. Sólo puedo decirte que la comunidad LGBTQ estará contenta con una escena de Chalamet con otro actor, pero tendrán que aguantar otras partes perturbadoras.
Cannibal love
The love story didn't captivate me, I got bored at certain moments. That romance between Maren and Lee I think it lacked some chemistry between them. That was my perception, maybe it was because of my mood at the time of watching it, maybe you are moved by the romance between these characters. The performances are good, but I still couldn't connect with them, the way they fall in love, I didn't believe it at any point.
That bothered me when it ended, because the ending should have a big impact and unfortunately I couldn't feel it. It's a frustration to know that the ending is to rip your heart out and cry, but that wasn't the case for me. It's a heartbreaking ending but it left me a little indifferent. It makes me a little angry, because I wanted to be ripped apart, to be devoured, I wanted to be the emotional fodder for the film. Maybe with you it was different and you ended up screaming in pain and trying to tear off a piece of flesh.
What makes the film uneven is the failure to maintain that balance between horror and teen romance. The latter is given too much time with scenes that don't really deepen the characters. There is even a female secondary character that should have had more development, so that in the final part we ache for a certain revelation. This is a serious mistake in a film that is two hours and ten minutes long. A lot of time is wasted in that journey, with characters that didn't contribute anything important.
I haven't figured out if the filmmaker wanted to drag it out and was ordered to make cuts, but that's the feeling I get when Maren decides to leave Lee, only to reappear some time later, we don't know where she went, what she did, what happened during all that time she was alone, who she met, who she fed on, lots of questions, few answers, she only comes back to resume the romantic plot.
Eat me to the bone
This is the part of the story that caught my attention, that I wanted to see more of. Yes, my taste for blood is what helped me to see the beauty of the film, it is the most interesting, we know that there are few cannibals, but some have a well developed sense of smell and can sense the presence of another. What are they, how many are there, have they arrested any, how have they lived all this time without being caught?
The whole theme of cannibalism and the need to eat others to satiate their hunger, although it is what I liked the most, has its weaknesses. Any universe, no matter how much fantasy it has, must be consistent with itself. In the film many murders are committed and we never see any investigation, they are cannibals, there are people who die, I understand that being set in the eighties there was no DNA evidence, but for example Lee makes many mistakes, leaving footprints in vehicles or places. How is it possible that no investigation is included in the film?
They are small details, but I couldn't let it go, this young couple is in a van stolen from a man whose body was left abandoned in a lonely place, but at some point someone must have found the body. There is no news about it, nothing. The young people go quietly through life, leaving footprints, evidence, etc. but here the dead don't seem to matter to anyone.
Although the love story consumes much of the film's footage that could have been focused in another direction, the cannibalistic and gory scenes gave me enough pleasure to leave me satisfied. Special mention to the scenes featuring the character played by Mark Rylance, a great actor who takes over the screen in his scenes, an enigmatic and interesting character that I wanted to know more about his past.
He wants to look up the book to find out if there is any metaphor about the Reagan era and the anthropophagi in the story, maybe in the novel there is more implicit criticism of the American society of the eighties, which has not had many changes, because we are still devouring each other.
Amor caníbal
La historia de amor no me cautivó, me aburrí en ciertos momentos. Ese romance entre Maren y Lee creo que le faltó algo de química entre ellos. Esa fue mi percepción, tal vez fue por mi estado de ánimo al momento de verla, tal vez a ti te conmueva el romance entre estos personajes. Las actuaciones son buenas, pero aun así no pude conectar con ellos, la forma en que se enamoran, no me la creí en ningún momento.
Eso me molestó cuando terminó, porque el final debería tener un gran impacto y lamentablemente no pude sentirlo. Es una frustración saber que el final es para arrancarte el corazón y llorar, pero no fue mi caso. Es un final desgarrador pero me dejó un poco indiferente. Me da un poco de rabia, porque quería que me desgarraran, que me devoraran, quería ser el alimento emocional de la película. Quizás contigo fue diferente y acabaste gritando de dolor e intentando arrancarte un trozo de carne.
Lo que hace que la película sea desigual es el fracaso a la hora de mantener ese equilibrio entre el horror y el romance adolescente. A este último se le da demasiado tiempo con escenas que no profundizan realmente en los personajes. Incluso hay un personaje secundario femenino que debería haber tenido más desarrollo, para que en la parte final nos doliera cierta revelación. Esto es un grave error en una película que dura dos horas y diez minutos. Se pierde mucho tiempo en ese trayecto, con unos personajes que no aportaban nada importante.
No he averiguado si el cineasta quiso alargarlo y le ordenaron hacer cortes, pero esa es la sensación que tengo cuando Maren decide abandonar a Lee, para reaparecer tiempo después, no sabemos a dónde fue, qué hizo, qué pasó durante todo ese tiempo que estuvo sola, a quién conoció, de quién se alimentó, muchas preguntas, pocas respuestas, sólo vuelve para retomar la trama romántica.
Cómeme hasta los huesos
Es la parte de la historia que me llamo la atención, de la que quería ver más. Sí, mi gusto por la sangre es lo que ayudó a ver la belleza de la película, es lo más interesante, sabemos que hay pocos caníbales, pero algunos tienen el olfato bien desarrollado y pueden sentir la presencia de otro. ¿Qué son, cuántos hay, han detenido a alguno, cómo han vivido todo este tiempo sin ser atrapados?
Todo el tema del canibalismo y la necesidad de comerse a otros para saciar su hambre, aunque es lo que más me ha gustado, tiene sus puntos débiles. Cualquier universo, por mucha fantasía que tenga, debe ser coherente consigo mismo. En la película se cometen muchos asesinatos y nunca vemos ninguna investigación, son caníbales, hay gente que muere, entiendo que al estar ambientada en los ochenta no había pruebas de ADN, pero por ejemplo Lee comete muchos errores, dejando huellas en vehículos o lugares. ¿Cómo es posible que no se incluya ninguna investigación en la película?
Son pequeños detalles, pero no podía dejarlo pasar, esta joven pareja está en una camioneta robada a un hombre cuyo cuerpo fue dejado abandonado en un lugar solitario, pero en algún momento alguien debió encontrar el cuerpo. No hay noticias al respecto, nada. Los jóvenes van tranquilamente por la vida, dejando huellas, pruebas, etc. pero aquí los muertos no parecen importarle a nadie.
Aunque la historia de amor consume gran parte del metraje de la película que podría haberse enfocado en otra dirección, las escenas caníbales y sangrientas me dieron el suficiente placer como para dejarme satisfecho. Mención especial a las escenas en las que aparece el personaje interpretado por Mark Rylance, un gran actor que se adueña de la pantalla en sus escenas, un personaje enigmático e interesante del que quería saber más sobre su pasado.
Quiere buscar el libro para saber si hay alguna metáfora sobre la era Reagan y los antropófagos de la historia, quizás en la novela hay más crítica implícita a la sociedad americana de los ochenta, que no ha tenido muchos cambios, porque nos seguimos devorando unos a otros.
What is the plot of the film?
Maren is a young African-American girl who attends a high school in a town in deep America, one night she cannot control a strange desire to eat human flesh and almost devours the finger of one of her classmates. Her father and she quickly flee that town, but a few days later her father leaves her alone, exhausted from protecting her, he leaves her some recordings explaining some things, she decides to go in search of her mother, on a trip through a part of the country, she will meet others who are anthropophagous like her, she distrusts the first one leaving him alone, but then she will meet Lee, a young man fleeing from his past and trying to survive on the roads. The two will strike up a friendship, helping her to find her mother and soon they will be attracted to each other, trusting not to eat each other, love will arise. Will Maren find her mother? Will she discover her origin? What is Lee hiding from his past? Will they manage to love each other and have a normal life? What danger lurks in the background without them knowing it?
