While I recover from the slaps received for criticizing the message of the movie King Richard, I write this post dedicated to the horror genre to recommend two excellent productions, one American and one Spanish, but with a common factor, both have characters that cause me panic.

Last year I told you in one of my reviews, that something that scares me a lot is old people in horror movies. It's been my whole life, ever since I was a kid. Those of you who have been reading me for several years on the platform know this, because I've told you about it many times. It's a bit illogical, isn't it? I have gone through situations where my life was in danger, but I never felt fear in those moments. Now, seeing old people like the ones in these movies, alter my brain and disturb me a lot.
Paradoxically, this altered perception of what I am seeing, besides producing fear, also makes me enter a kind of pleasant lethargy. I cannot stop seeing the images of the old people that disturb me, I think I am masochistic in wanting to continue seeing images that cause me discomfort. The mind is an enigma impossible to decipher and that is why we are all unique.
My opinion about these films is absolutely subjective, because in art it is impossible for objectivity to exist, that only works in theory, in books that talk about it and for me it is a utopia, in practice, in real life, everything is very different. Everything is analyzed subjectively, but I will come back to that later.

El año pasado les comenté en una de mis reseñas, que algo que me da mucho miedo son los ancianos en las películas de terror. Ha sido toda mi vida, desde que era un niño. Los que me leen desde hace varios años en la plataforma lo sabes, porque se los he contado muchas veces. Es un poco ilógico, ¿no? He pasado por situaciones en las que mi vida corría peligro, pero nunca sentí miedo en esos momentos. Ahora bien, ver a ancianos como los que aparecen en estas películas, alteran mi cerebro y me perturban mucho.
Paradójicamente, esta percepción alterada de lo que estoy viendo, además de producirme miedo, también me hace entrar en una especie de letargo agradable. No puedo dejar de ver las imágenes de los ancianos que me perturban, creo que soy masoquista al querer seguir viendo imágenes que me causan malestar. La mente es un enigma imposible de descifrar y por eso todos somos únicos.
Mi opinión sobre estas películas es absolutamente subjetiva, porque en el arte es imposible que exista la objetividad, eso sólo funciona en la teoría, en los libros que hablan de ello y para mí es una utopía, en la práctica, en la vida real, todo es muy diferente. Todo se analiza de forma subjetiva, pero más adelante volveré sobre este tema.

From its first scene the movie activated my memory-controlling neurotransmitters. Glutamate, acetylcholine and some dopamine spreading through my brain, which influenced me to enter fully into a very pleasant state of nostalgia.
It happened instantly, a click in my mind reminded me of the plethora of low budget horror movies, plus the exploitation films set and made in the seventies that I enjoyed from a very young age through the now obsolete VHS and DVD players. It was a magical moment, reliving those times. It's great to give myself completely over to my dopamine and let it do with me what it wants.
I was a compulsive consumer of all the rare stuff I could get my hands on in the old video stores, renting up to 10 DVDs for a whole weekend. So my impressions of this film are already clearly influenced by my personal experience, where there is a more important factor than taste, because many of those old films did not have a quality technical finish and the low budget was noticeable, but I enjoyed them too much. For another person who has never seen exploitation films in his life, his perception will be more limited, not having lived those experiences and not having that learning process, and he may not like the film I am recommending.
What is the plot of X? The story has been told many times, sometimes in a very bad way, but in this case they have put a lot of effort in the making and in every detail with great care to offer us this horror experience paying homage to old school cinema. Six young people, well, actually three of the characters are not so young. Three women and three men make up this group of people who get into a van to travel to deep America, to an old farmhouse where they have rented one of the cabins of the place to shoot a pornographic film. The year is 1979 and the home video industry is about to explode. They are going to shoot a production that will make them rich: the American dream! But the farm is owned by a couple of totally decrepit old men, who just looking at them made my stomach turn, especially for the old woman named Pearl.
Desde su primera escena la película activo mis neurotransmisores que controlan la memoria. Glutamato, acetilcolina y algo de dopamina extendiéndose por mi cerebro, lo que me influyó para entrar de lleno en un estado de nostalgia muy agradable.
Sucedió al instante, un clic en mi mente me recordó la plétora de películas de terror de bajo presupuesto, además de las películas de explotación ambientadas y realizadas en los años setenta que disfruté desde muy joven a través de los ya obsoletos reproductores de VHS y DVD. Fue un momento mágico, revivir aquellos tiempos. Es genial entregarme por completo a mi dopamina y que haga conmigo lo que quiera.
Yo era un consumidor compulsivo de todas las cosas raras que podía conseguir en los viejos videoclubs, alquilando hasta 10 DVD para todo un fin de semana. Por eso mis impresiones sobre esta película ya están claramente influenciadas por mi experiencia personal, donde hay un factor más importante que el gusto, porque muchas de esas viejas películas no tenían un acabado técnico de calidad y el bajo presupuesto se notaba, pero yo las disfrutaba demasiado. Para otra persona que no haya visto en su vida películas de explotación, su percepción será más limitada, al no haber vivido esas experiencias y no tener ese proceso de aprendizaje, y puede que no le guste la película que le estoy recomendando.
¿Cuál es el argumento de X? La historia se ha contado muchas veces, a veces de muy mala manera, pero en este caso se han esforzado en la realización y en cada detalle con mucho cuidado para ofrecernos esta experiencia de terror homenajeando al cine de la vieja escuela. Seis jóvenes, bueno, en realidad tres de los personajes no son tan jóvenes. Tres mujeres y tres hombres componen este grupo de personas que se suben a una furgoneta para viajar a la América profunda, a una vieja granja donde han alquilado una de las cabañas del lugar para rodar una película pornográfica. Es el año 1979 y la industria del vídeo doméstico está a punto de explotar. Van a rodar una producción que les hará ricos: ¡el sueño americano! Pero la granja es propiedad de un par de ancianos totalmente decrépitos, que sólo con verlos se me revolvió el estómago, sobre todo por la anciana llamada Pearl.
Directed by Ti West, a filmmaker who handles the horror genre with the efficiency of a master, using all the classic elements of these stories. If you like the horror genre you have to know the filmography of Ti West, of whom I became a fan since I saw The House of the Devil, he works both in film and television, he even experimented with a western: In a Valley of Violence, but I recommend his horror works, if you have not seen his previous works, you are missing good films that help to value the new projects of the director.
There are characteristic signs of his cinema, setting, use of video, a conservative and extremely religious society, there are even small sequences in which a television set reproduces a meeting of a religious congregation of what looks like a sect, making a self-reference to The Sacrament, another disturbing film where Ti West made us feel terror by putting us in a sect of crazy and suicidal religious fanatics with actor Gene Jones playing the leader, in an insane acting work and that was a pleasure to see years ago.
Repulsion, disturbance and disgust. Believe me, there are scenes in this movie that will make you feel all of those things. We already know what the structure of this classic horror story is like, outsiders arriving in a deep American town with strange, conservative and religious locals. When the clash occurs and a character's intentions are revealed, the gore kicks in to delight us with that beautiful red color of movie blood.
It's no secret that I like blood in movies, even if it looks too red, because when I cut myself, I notice it has a darker hue, I swallow it, it's my blood, there's nothing strange about it. I'm not a vampire and I'm sure many of you eat blood sausage, that's cow's blood! Several people have told me that blood is not really that color when it travels through the veins, we see it that color when it leaves the body, I am not a scientist and I don't know if it will be true. Si te gusta el género de terror tienes que conocer la filmografía de Ti West, de quien me hice fan desde que vi La casa del diablo, trabaja tanto en cine como en televisión, incluso experimentó con un western: En un valle de violencia, pero recomiendo sus obras de terror, si no has visto sus anteriores trabajos, te estás perdiendo buenas películas que ayudan a valorar los nuevos proyectos del director.
Hay señas características de su cine, ambientación, uso del vídeo, una sociedad conservadora y extremadamente religiosa, incluso hay pequeñas secuencias en las que un plató de televisión reproduce una reunión de una congregación religiosa de lo que parece una secta, haciendo una autoreferencia a El Sacramento, otra película inquietante donde Ti West nos hacía sentir terror metiéndonos en una secta de fanáticos religiosos locos y suicidas con el actor Gene Jones interpretando al líder, en un trabajo actoral demencial y que fue un placer ver hace años.

No es ningún secreto que me gusta la sangre en las películas, aunque parezca demasiado roja, porque cuando me corto, noto que tiene un tono más oscuro, me la trago, es mi sangre, no hay nada extraño en ello. No soy un vampiro y seguro que muchos de ustedes comen morcilla, ¡eso es sangre de vaca! Varias personas me han dicho que la sangre no es realmente de ese color cuando viaja por las venas, la vemos de ese color cuando sale del cuerpo, no soy científico y no sé si será cierto. Tendré que preguntar a mi querida amiga Dalla más adelante. Sé que ella me dará la respuesta correcta, quizás me responda en los comentarios, es una de mis pocas lectoras.
Now, back to the subject of subjectivity, because I loved the movie and I already have it among the best horror movies of this year. Someone said that beauty is subjective, therefore, art is also subjective, it depends exclusively on who is looking at it. I don't know who said it, I don't remember and I'm not going to search the internet, I don't look for anything on the net when I write my reviews, besides at this moment I'm without electric power and writing from my mobile, elaborating the post based on the memories and knowledge I have. You can look up who was the one who said a similar phrase, I always put it as an example to explain that each person, based on their life experience and acquired knowledge evaluates and gives a different opinion, especially when it comes to works of art, whether it is a movie, book, painting, etc.
For me it is an excellent film, that without telling anything new, is a delight for fans of the genre and pays homage to one of the great classics, so well done that it will activate the memory sensors of an entire generation that grew up consuming these productions. On a personal level it made me feel when I lived at my aunts house and spent weekends devouring these films on an old TV and DVD player that I had bought after a long period of saving.
For others it may be a bad movie, either because they really aren't fans of the genre, don't enjoy it, or don't recognize all the references made in it. Both opinions are respectable, as long as it is supported by solid arguments.
Fortunately, most horror fans have reacted positively, as well as the specialized critics, and Ti West seems to have been very sure of what he was doing because he was already simultaneously shooting a prequel. Yes, sir. My total admiration for the filmmaker, showing firmness and confidence in what he was doing, demonstrating that he had meticulously studied his production. I believe that this year we will be able to see this film that will tell us about Pearl's past.
Ahora, vuelvo al tema de la subjetividad, porque la película me encantó y ya la tengo entre las mejores películas de terror de este año. Alguien dijo que la belleza es subjetiva, por lo tanto, el arte también es subjetivo, depende exclusivamente de quien lo mira. No sé quién lo dijo, no lo recuerdo y no voy a buscar en internet, no busco nada en la red cuando escribo mis críticas, además en este momento estoy sin energía eléctrica y escribiendo desde el móvil, elaborando el post en base a los recuerdos y conocimientos que tengo. Puedes buscar quien fue el que dijo una frase similar, siempre lo pongo como ejemplo para explicar que cada persona, en base a su experiencia de vida y conocimientos adquiridos evalúa y da una opinión diferente, sobre todo cuando se trata de obras de arte, ya sea una película, libro, pintura, etc.
Para mí es una excelente película, que sin contar nada nuevo, es una delicia para los aficionados al género y rinde homenaje a uno de los grandes clásicos, tan bien hecho que activará los sensores de la memoria de toda una generación que creció consumiendo estas producciones. A nivel personal me hizo sentir cuando vivía en casa de mis tías y pasaba los fines de semana devorando estas películas en un viejo televisor y un reproductor de DVD que había comprado tras un largo periodo de ahorro.
Para otros puede ser una mala película, ya sea porque realmente no son fans del género, no la disfrutan o no reconocen todas las referencias que se hacen en ella. Ambas opiniones son respetables, siempre y cuando se apoye en argumentos sólidos.
Afortunadamente, la mayoría de los fans del terror han reaccionado positivamente, así como la crítica especializada, y Ti West parece haber estado muy seguro de lo que hacía porque ya estaba rodando de forma simultanea una precuela. Sí, señor. Mi total admiración por el cineasta, mostrando firmeza y confianza en lo que hacía, demostrando que había estudiado meticulosamente su producción. Creo que este año podremos ver esta película que nos contará el pasado de Pearl.

There was one thing that surprised me about the movie, the actress Mia Goth, who plays the young Maxine , girlfriend of the adult film producer and wanna be X-rated movie star, also plays the disturbing old lady Pearl. I found out when I saw the end credits of the film, I paused to make sure I hadn't misread, remember I'm getting old and my eyesight is failing me.
Mia Goth will be seen again in the prequel. She and the other actress, Jenna Ortega who is 19 years old, but has been in horror movies since she was a kid and I saw her recently in the latest film in the Scream saga. Both have scenes that make them a Scream Queen of this generation.
X is what the terrible movie Netflix recently released about The Texas Chainsaw Massacre should have been. X if a well deserved homage, it also adds to the formulaic dose of exploitation cinema, with sex scenes and that seventies vibe, which is captured not only with the costumes and some songs of the era, it is also brought out in the cinematography that made me remember the old movies that remain intact in my memory.

X si es un merecido homenaje, además se suma a la dosis de fórmula del cine de explotación, con escenas de sexo y ese ambiente setentero, que se plasma no solo con el vestuario y algunas canciones de la época, también se hace resaltar en la fotografía que me hizo recordar las viejas películas que permanecen intactas en mi memoria.

Spanish production from last year. Horror movies made in the motherland, that's what we Latin Americans call Spain. I saw this movie about two months ago, I don't remember what day of the week it was, but it was in the morning. Yes, I don't have a favorite time to watch movies or series, I don't care if it's a Monday at eight in the morning, I love it and I enjoy it no matter what time it is.
As the title says, one of the main characters is a granny and maybe because I watched it in the morning, I didn't have weird dreams that night, but it did alter my mental state for most of that day.
The film gets straight to the point, without much preamble, the first thing we see is an old lady in a coffee shop, constantly looking at her watch. Her face, her look put me on alert, where normal people might see tenderness, I only saw a macabre face. I remember again that it only happens to me with movies, although I do remember many years ago, seeing an old lady on the street and she looked at me ugly.
What is the grandmother's argument? Don't worry I'm not going to spoil anything important for you, I can only say that the story tells us the life of Susana, a beautiful young woman who works as a model in Paris and is about to get an excellent contract when she is urgently called from Madrid. Her grandmother, Pilar, has collapsed and is her only relative. Susana travels to Madrid to take care of her grandmother for a few days while she finds someone to pay to look after her. As she doesn't want to put her in a nursing home, she prefers to keep her at home. But poor Susana doesn't know the hell that awaits her for taking care of her grandmother.
Producción española del año pasado. Cine de terror hecho en la patria madre, así llamamos los latinoamericanos a España. Esta película la vi hace unos dos meses, no recuerdo qué día de la semana era, pero fue por la mañana. Sí, no tengo una hora favorita para ver películas o series, me da igual que sea un lunes a las ocho de la mañana, me encanta y la disfruto sea la hora que sea.
Como dice el título, una de las protagonistas es una abuelita y quizás por haberla visto por la mañana, esa noche no tuve sueños raros, pero sí alteró mi estado mental durante casi todo ese día.
La película va directa al grano, sin muchos preámbulos, lo primero que vemos es una anciana en una cafetería, mirando constantemente su reloj. Su cara, su mirada me puso en alerta, donde la gente normal podría ver ternura, yo sólo vi una cara macabra. Vuelvo a recordar que sólo me pasa con las películas, aunque sí recuerdo hace muchos años, ver a una anciana por la calle y me miró feo.
¿Cuál es el argumento de la abuela? No se preocupen que no os voy a estropear nada importante, sólo puedo decir que la historia nos cuenta la vida de Susana, una joven preciosa que trabaja como modelo en París y está a punto de conseguir un excelente contrato cuando la llaman urgentemente desde Madrid. Su abuela, Pilar, ha sufrido un colapso y es su único familiar. Susana viaja a Madrid para cuidar de su abuela durante unos días mientras encuentra a alguien a quien pagar para que la cuide. Como no quiere ingresarla en un centro de mayores, prefiere tenerla en casa. Pero la pobre Susana, no sabe el infierno que le espera por cuidar de su abuela.

Carlos Vermut is in charge of writing the screenplay, another reason to see the film, he is one of my favorite Spanish filmmakers, his films break out of the commercial mold, although here he is only in charge of the screenplay, but you can feel some of his influence, creating a product with many virtues.
It is a pity that it has only been nominated for a Goya in the music and special effects categories. But in the Spanish film academy it seems that the same thing happens as in Hollywood, horror films are relegated to the background.
What stood out about the film? In addition to its demonic story with supernatural elements, the performances of the two main actresses execute their roles convincingly and impeccably.

La mayor parte de su filmografía es de género de terror, pero también ha hecho comedia y thrillers, por ejemplo, la película Quien a Hierro Mata, con Luis Tosar, que reseñé hace tiempo. Este año tiene previsto el estreno de Hermana Muerte, otra película de terror ambientada en la posguerra civil, que espero con ganas.
Carlos Vermut es el encargado de escribir el guion, otro motivo para ver la película, es uno de mis cineastas españoles favoritos, sus películas se salen del molde comercial, aunque aquí sólo se encarga del guion, pero se nota algo de su influencia, creando un producto con muchas virtudes.
Es una pena que sólo haya sido nominada al Goya en las categorías de música y efectos especiales. Pero en la academia de cine española parece que ocurre lo mismo que en Hollywood, el cine de terror queda relegado a un segundo plano.
¿Qué ha destacado de la película? Además de su historia demoníaca con elementos sobrenaturales, las interpretaciones de las dos actrices principales ejecutan sus papeles de forma convincente e impecable.

Vera Valdez is the one who terrifies us with her interpretation of Pilar, and I still get chills when I remember her in her character. I swear that if this old woman appears to me, I will run away so I don't have to see her, but at the same time I can't help but want to look at her up close to feel fear and pleasure again. That devilish look in some scene, I don't know how to explain it again. I'm not even religious, I don't believe in paradise or hell, but old women with devilish looks are my Achilles heel. An excellent performance by the actress who, behind that innocence that at the beginning she can transmit, hides a dark secret.
The film reveals the big secret from the beginning. If you are a viewer versed in this production you will quickly guess what it is about, but this will not prevent you from enjoying the film because you will be eager to see how the denouement will be. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen and every time I saw Almudena Amor (Susana) in danger, I wished she managed to escape.
There are some references to classics of the genre. There are influences, it is not a story of great originality, but it is well made, taking advantage of the few locations and the talent of the actresses to build a Spanish psychological and supernatural horror film that deserves to be spread. I've said it a thousand times in the past, let's explore the cinema being made outside of Hollywood, you will be pleasantly surprised.
La talentosa Almudena Amor, a quien vi en un papel secundario en la película El Buen Patrón, interpreta a Susana, la modelo que está consolidando su carrera en París, pero que ama a su único pariente vivo, su abuela Pilar. Almudena no sólo transmite lo que dice su apellido: Amor, en las tiernas escenas con su abuela, también consigue transmitir terror cuando las cosas empiezan a ir mal. Esta actriz se está haciendo famosa en su país. Hace una semana vi en youtube un antiguo episodio de La Resistencia, que emite Movistar + donde Broncano la entrevistaba, bueno, lo que se dice entrevista en ese programa. Sólo vi ese episodio por la actriz, porque La Resistencia ya ha perdido el encanto de sus primeras temporadas. Le auguro un excelente futuro a Almudena Amor. También estará en la próxima película del director.
Vera Valdez es la que nos aterra con su interpretación de Pilar, y todavía me dan escalofríos al recordarla en su personaje. Les juro que si se me aparece esta anciana, saldré corriendo para no tener que verla, pero al mismo tiempo no pudre evitar tener ganas de mirarla de cerca para volver a sentir miedo y placer. Esa mirada diabólica en alguna escena, no sé cómo explicarla de nuevo. Ni siquiera soy religioso, no creo en el paraíso ni en el infierno, pero las ancianas con mirada diabólica son mi talón de Aquiles. Una excelente interpretación de la actriz que tras esa inocencia que al principio puede transmitir, esconde un oscuro secreto.
La película revela el gran secreto desde el principio. Si eres un espectador versado en esta producción adivinarás rápidamente de qué se trata, pero esto no te impedirá disfrutar de la película porque estarás deseando ver cómo será el desenlace. No podía apartar los ojos de la pantalla y cada vez que veía a Almudena Amor (Susana) en peligro, deseaba que consiguiera escapar.
Hay que destacar algunas referencias a clásicos del género. Hay influencias, no es una historia de gran originalidad, pero está bien hecha, aprovechando las pocas localizaciones y el talento de las actrices para construir una película española de terror psicológico y sobrenatural que merece ser difundida. Lo he dicho mil veces en el pasado, exploremos el cine que se hace fuera de Hollywood, les sorprenderá gratamente.

X and The Grandmother are the two movies I recommend. You can see them next weekend. I plan to watch them again, I like to confront my traumas with the old ladies and the feeling of pleasure I get afterwards is very pleasant. What can I say, I'm not normal.

Si quieres torturarme sólo tienes que encerrarme en una habitación con ancianas de aspecto malvado como Pearl y Pilar. Oye, qué casualidad, no me había dado cuenta de que los nombres de ambas ancianas empiezan por P.
X y La Abuela son las dos películas que recomiendo. Puedes verlas el próximo fin de semana. Yo pienso volver a verlas, me gusta enfrentarme a mis traumas con las ancianas y la sensación de placer que tengo después es muy agradable. Qué quieres que te diga, no soy normal.
