Drama set in the world of finance, which tells the story of a group of young recent graduates who compete for permanent employment in one of the most prestigious banks in London.

What is the plot?
Harper, Yasmin, Robert, Hari, Gus, Greg, are a group of recent graduates who have entered the trial period at Pierpoint, one of London's largest investment banks. Each of them will have to struggle to excel in the fast-paced world of finance, because only a few are eligible for permanent employment. They will have to cope with the pressure of the investment world, its mistakes, competitiveness and relationships with bosses who seem like tyrants. Friendship, betrayal, high alcohol consumption, drugs and lots of sex will be part of the life of these aspiring successful brokers.

The series has in its history, interesting narratives, which address current issues and whose characters, although they want to be part of the elite who earn a lot of money and manage the economy from a desk, are not a reflection of the success we have seen in other productions that deal with the same subject.
In other films and series, alcohol and excessive drugs in the working environment of the big investment bank brokers, reflect the success and achievements of the protagonists of those stories. In the Industry series, this excess of drugs is a way for young protagonists to cope with pressure in a competitive world.
The drugs and the ambition to be elected, will cause a tragedy with the character of Hari, at the beginning of the series, a fact that will be manipulated by the bank so that their reputation is not affected, but that will affect the environment and each of the characters during the eight episodes.
The heads of each unit where the young graduates are assigned have very defined personalities, with behavior that exceeds the limits of a healthy work environment. Labor and corporate abuse seems to be a constant, although some of them will have consequences, the system works like this and it seems that it will not change.
Sex is another element present in each episode, already in the first chapter we see a male frontal nudity, and there will be several relationships, some more turbulent than others, among this group of ambitious characters.

The characters are the ones who make us watch the development of the story, they are built in an excellent way, giving the credibility to the series. We will share with them their secrets, their lacks, sufferings and desires.

Harper Stern is the young American girl who has lied and forged the school certificate that qualifies her to work in the bank. She shouldn't really be there, but she's nimble enough to get by in that world. She'll make mistakes, but she'll soon learn from them. She has many personal conflicts, she hides things from her past, but she is not a fragile woman, you have to be careful with her, because she will not hesitate to betray, negotiate and betray again to get what she wants so much.
She is the most prominent character and is played by the actress Myha'la Herrold, whom she did not know at all. A new face for me. Among his previous works is a film called Prematuro and the appearance in an episode of the series Modern Family.

Robert Spearing, the handsome young man, who uses drugs, drink and excess. He has an intense sex life. He is a young man who seems lost, who does not know what he will do if he is not hired. He will have a friendship with Harper, but it will be with Yasmin that he will maintain a sick game of seduction and sex, in which he is willing to do anything. The character is one of my favorites and is played by the actor Harry Lawtey, who has participated in some British television series and in the film City of Tiny Lights.

Yasmin Kara-Hanani is the young woman who comes from a rich family, has a boyfriend who is actually a failure, and her insecurity is her worst enemy to excel in the work environment. She will suffer abuse at work from her unit chief. But it will be her relationship with Robert, participating in an erotic game between the two, that will provide the hottest scenes in the series.
It is the character that I liked the most and the one that has progressed the most, besides being played magnificently by the actress Marisa Abela, an unknown, who left me absolutely delighted. Her previous work was in the British series Cobra and in the films Hombre en una caja and Cinco citas.

Gus Sackey, another young man who comes from a family with money, is sure of what he wants. He is smart and has a lot of ambition, but for an unfortunate fact, he feels that at Pierpoint he is not valued as he should be. In addition, he has a relationship with one of the employees who is secretly gay, committed and doesn't want to formalize anything serious with Gus. The actor who plays him is David Jonsson, who is not very well known and has worked in the series Endeavour and Deep State.

Daria Greenock is another of Pierpoint's employees. She will establish a relationship of supposed friendship with Harper and will be the one to help her in a difficult situation, but she will also be the victim of a vile betrayal, because in that corporate world only piranhas want to eat each other. She is played by Freya Mavor, who is not very well known around the world, although she is an actress who has worked in successful series such as Skins and The White Queen. I remember her from the movie The Lady with the Car and a Gun, which I recommend seeing.

Eric Tao, one of the unit heads, a successful bank employee, will be in charge of Harper, being his mentor, but Erik's way will get him into trouble. He is a tough, straightforward man and can often be seen as a bully. It's hard to feel sympathy for him. Eric knows Harper's secret, but he will still take a betrayal hit. His face is known, for being played by the actor Ken Leung, remembered for his character Miles Straume in the extraordinary series Lost.
There are other important characters, but it is difficult to go through them all. The actor Conor MacNeill plays Kenny Kilbane , Yasmin's nasty boss, who mistreated her at first, acting like a perfect idiot who provokes a punch in the face. Actor Will Tudor, plays Gus' lover, Theo Tuk, but is not ready to declare himself gay. Priyanga Burford plays Sara Dhadwal, one of the bank's directors, and the well-known actor Derek Riddell plays Clement Cowan, one of the bank's oldest runners, who advised Robert.

The creators of the series are Mickey Down and Konrad Kay, who had worked together in 2014, with a comedy called Gregor. Now they are joining forces again to bring us this intense drama with the corporate and financial world to shape the story of some ambitious and worthy young representatives of this lost generation. They have been assisted by another screenwriter: Sam H. Freeman. The first episode has been directed by Lena Dunham, prestigious director and actress for being the creator and protagonist of the HBO Girls series, for which she won the BAFTA award in 2013.
The series has a lot of potential to continue with other seasons, which is not yet known. All eight episodes have already aired and we just have to wait for HBO to decide. It's a story I like, because the theme of the financial world catches my attention. I hope they will soon announce a second season, otherwise I also recommend it because it has a close enough ending, to remain in a unique season.
All eight episodes are on HBO.

My Ranking: 4/5
