Spin off movie of the hit Italian series Gomorrah, focusing on the life of the character Ciro Di Marzio. This movie review - opinion of L'Immortale , contains SPOILERS from all four seasons of the Gomorrah series.

Patrizia's last words to Genny still echo in my memory:
-¿Quindi, questo è tutto Genny?
-Questo è tutto Patri
The end of the fourth season of the series Gomorrah was very painful. My favorite character, the woman who from simple caretaker of the mafia boss while he was in hiding, had risen to the top, becoming the one who gave the orders in Secondigliano.
The life of this character came to an end, at the hands of Gennaro. Such a betrayal is unforgivable to me. I hate Genny and I hope that when the series comes to an end, she gets what she deserves. She lived thanks to Patri, who was always loyal to her, until the last moment.
If this fact shocked the viewers at the end of the fourth season, already in the third season we were heartbroken with the death of Ciro, a soldier of the Gomorrah who had also achieved power, but who had paid too high a price. He himself murdered his wife and during his fight against Gennaro's father, his little daughter would be killed.
Ciro had nothing left to lose and so he decides to sacrifice himself in the end of the third season, taking all the blame for the events of that season and Gennaro is forced to be the one who shoots him. The two men of the Gomorrah, who consider themselves brothers. They said goodbye in an emotional scene that culminated with Ciro's body sinking into the sea, the immortal had died.
Fans of the series created by Roberto Saviano, based on his own novel Gomorrah, which had already had a film adaptation, at the end of that third season we received good news. Actor Marco D'Amore, who plays Ciro in the series, announced that he was preparing a movie about his character, to be directed by himself.
Marco D'Amore already had experience in directing several episodes of the series, and according to the latest news, in the next season he will be in charge of directing five episodes. Other directors of the series are the great Stefano Sollima, Francesca Comencini and Claudio Cupellini. The production of the film gave us a joy, we would see again the character Ciro, especially his origins and how he became part of the city's Gomorrah. The story is written by the four screenwriters of the series Leonardo Fasoli, Francesco Ghiaccio, Maddalena Ravagli and Giulia Forgione, so we were expecting a great movie about the most beloved character, so far, of the series.

There was one thing that really intrigued me: what is the plot of L'Immortale?
At this point I'm going to say the biggest spoiler that influences the next season, still in pre-production: Ciro Di Marzio is alive!
Ciro is rescued by a boat of fishermen from the sea, he is badly wounded, the bullet missed his heart by centimeters. Those who rescue him recognize him, he is Ciro the immortal. Fortunately it is Don Aniello who hears the news and takes charge of his recovery. After a while, the mafioso tells him that no one must know that he is alive and sends him out of Italy. Ciro will be in charge of the drug business with Russian mobsters in Latvia. There he will be assigned to help an old acquaintance, Bruno, the man who trained him to steal when he was a kid. Ciro will recall his beginnings in the world of crime and his relationship with Bruno, while he must deal with the problems that arise in the war between Russians and Latvians for the control of drugs in the capital of that country.

L'Immortale is a film that presents a duality: it is a prequel to the series Gomorrah, which explores the origins of Ciro, and at the same time it is a sequel, because it serves as a bridge between the finished fourth season and the future fifth.
It is through the flashback resource that we will see the past of Ciro, from the moment when the earthquake occurs, when he was a baby and was the only survivor of the collapse of a building, for which he would receive, for the rest of his life, the nickname of The Immortal.
Parallel to this is the story of the present, where Ciro must deal with the war between the Lithuanian criminals who want him to sell them the drugs, and the loyalty to the Russian mobsters who are the ones who have business with the Gomorrah to get the drugs.
All the action and the struggles between the criminals take place in the story of the present, where Ciro will be put to the test and will have to figure out how to make the business work, despite a series of obstacles that will present themselves and where lies and betrayals will always be present, as in any crime thriller.
Ciro's character is a dead man in life, and so it shows in the way he acts, we will see him somber, pensive, longing for past times that will never return, he is a soul in pain, perhaps repentant of the mistakes he made. Having killed his own wife and then the vile murder of his little daughter, something he will never be able to overcome.
When he decided to die, he was also denied that right. In his eyes we can see that he no longer wanted to be in this world, but fate, again saved him, the immortal must pay for all his sins on earth.
The part I liked the most were the flashbacks, that trip to the past, in every memory of Ciro. The gang of children, commanded at that time by Bruno, who trained them to steal and helped them, giving them shelter, food and payment for their misdeeds.
Bruno's character was very important in their training and now, as an old man, and on the opposite side, working for the boy who became a man. Bruno will also play a very important role in the current stage, in a surprising twist of the story.
How did the boy Ciro go from being a simple thief to becoming part of the Savastano family? That is, in part, what the memories of the character's past show us. A boy who always had a dream of rising to the top in that lifestyle. And it wasn't just poverty that drove that dream, there was someone who was the deciding factor.
Stella was her name...
...from her first sequence, where she appears singing, I fell in love with her, just as Ciro totally fell in love with her. Stella was Bruno's girlfriend, a young woman. Ciro was a child, but she was his first love, he wanted Stella, a character of great importance in Ciro's personal story.
The actress Martina Attanasio is in charge of playing Stella, conquering the hearts of the viewers. In one of the last sequences of the film, she sings the song Bambina Mia by Italian singer Franco Ricciardi, which is part of the film's soundtrack. It is a beautiful and at the same time heartbreaking sequence that brings tears to our eyes.
The actress does not have a long career, this film seems to be her debut in cinema. Although she has theatrical training in two important theater schools in Naples. I loved it and I want her to continue her career in film and television, because I want to see her in other productions in the future.

No nun è over nun ce voglio credere ancora
No nun è over ritorna m'ho dice stu core
Non puoi buttare un amore nel profondo del mare
Forse un giorno capirai
E da me ritornarai
Pe sta pe sempe
Fragment of the lyrics of the song by Franco Riccardi

Marco D'Amore's direction also presents two different facets, in the adult and current stage of the character, he uses a slow narration of the story, without big jumps of action, focusing on deciphering the feelings of this man who is a dead man in life, with nothing to lose or gain, who does not seem to care about anything or anyone. Meanwhile, when narrating the character's childhood, he uses more agile resources with the camera to show the life of petty thieves in Naples.
The story of the present is set entirely in Rigo, the capital of Latvia, which gives it a new landscape that differentiates it from the series, but the spirit and style of Gomorrah are perceived throughout the film, even in the musical composition, which presents some small changes, and in the direction of photography by Guido Michelotti, which reminds us that this is still Gomorrah.

Giuseppe Aiello is the boy who plays Ciro in his stage as a delinquent child, a good choice, the actor conveys the agility of a criminal and at the same time the innocence of a child who sees how they take away what he loves from a very early age. What will make him become that cold and calculating criminal who will be on the rise in the Gomorrah.
Actor Salvatore D'Onofrio plays Bruno, when he sees Ciro again, but now it is Ciro who gives the orders. Ciro is now the Boss, the boy became what Bruno could never be. And the actor Gianni Vastarella is in charge of playing the young Bruno, when he was the boss of the children and Stella's boyfriend, but who will make a serious mistake, with serious consequences.
The actress Marianna Robustelli plays Vera, a married woman with children, who seems to be unhappy with the presence of Ciro in Rigo, but her husband and the whole family will enter the drug business and work for Ciro. Between them there will be a kind of attraction that will not be consummated.
Nello Mascia plays Don Aniello, the capo who saves the immortal's life and sends him to Rigo to be the intermediary with the Russians in the drug business. And actor Aleksey Guskov plays Yuri Dobeshenko, the Russian mafia boss who controls the business in Latvia.

The finale gives us an important clue for the next season of Gomorrah. According to the creators of the series, the fifth season was supposed to start shooting at the end of 2020, to premiere in the spring of 2021, but I have no recent news about it, what they did assure is that the fifth season will be the last.
That last scene of the movie, makes it clear that the final season will feature Cyrus, The Immortal. I just hope it will be his character in charge, who for some reason, must end Genny's life, because I will never forgive Gennaro for what he did to Patrizia.
Excellent movie for Gomorrah fans. If you have never seen the series, it will seem like a good crime thriller . But this movie is made especially for fans of the series.
I recommend you to watch the extraordinary series Gomorrah.
