Films about natural disasters, is a genre that I do not like very much, I have seen several, but there was only one with which I got excited: The Impossible.

When I saw natural disaster movies, they all seemed the same to me, even, one time they were in fashion, and even several Hollywood studios were releasing on the same dates, movies about volcanoes, earthquakes, etc. I would watch them to pass the time, but they didn't manage to make me feel at home with the characters. When I went to see The Impossible, I was very satisfied.
Henry and Maria Bennet, along with their three children, Lucas, Thomas and Simon, travel to Thailand for an incredible family vacation. When they are enjoying that paradise, the unthinkable happens, a terrible tsunami occurs in that area (the December 2004 tsunami). The family splits up, some with injuries, starting an emotional journey, where they will do whatever they can to find their loved ones.Separated by a natural catastrophe, in a strange country, they will not lose faith, hope of finding them alive. They will overcome all the obstacles they face. Making the impossible possible.

The visual recreation of the tsunami is really suffocating, making us suffer together with the protagonists of this natural catastrophe. It was at that moment that the film trapped me and did not free me until the end. That moment happens quickly, you don't have to wait long from the beginning of the film. Special effects are very well achieved. But the intention of Spanish director J.A. Bayona is not only to make a visually impressive film. The filmmaker focuses on the emotional aspect of the story.

The story of the family, who separate, whether they managed to survive. Maria and Lucas, on the one hand, manage to survive the tsunami, rescued and taken to a hospital. Although they want to believe that Henry and the other two children are alive, the terror that they might have died is present. On the other hand, there is Henry with Thomas and Simon, who feels that his wife and Lucas are alive, making the decision to entrust the care of the two boys to a local woman, to go and find the rest of his family.
It is this journey in search of his family, each one of them on their own, that moves us in the story. The faith each of them had in finding the people they love alive. Luke's determination in the hospital, to help, while looking for his father and brothers. After so many obstacles, the time comes for the final climax. It is the moment when we, the audience, are crying for the emotion of that family reunion.

Is it a true story?
I've always said it: reality always surpasses fiction. The film is inspired by real events. In December 2004, a Spanish doctor named Maria Belon was with her husband Enrique Alvarez and their three children on vacation in Thailand when the tsunami struck. The film is the story of her and her family. She was actively involved in various areas of the production of the film. A survival story, one among many, is not fiction, this impossible story was real.

Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor play Maria and Henry Bennet, both doing excellent acting work, especially her, for which she received nominations for major film awards. Naomi Watts is an extraordinary actress. McGregor also does very well, as the long-suffering father in search of Luke and Mary. But the character I liked best was Lucas, played by Tom Holland (a child at the time), was the actor's big-screen debut and received very good reviews and winning an award for best newcomer actor. Today he is well known for being the main character in the new Spider-Man films.

The Impossible is a Spanish production, spoken in English and with two Hollywood stars in the cast. It won five Goyas (it had 14 nominations), including Best Director for José Antonio Bayona ( J.A. Bayona) and Naomi Watts was also nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar, although it didn't win any.
If you want a disaster movie that will move you and make you cry, this is the movie to see.
