Another zombie movie? That's what I asked myself the day I went to the movies, while thinking about which movie to see. The poster caught my attention, although in my country they gave it an ugly title. I started to see the names of the director and the actors, it was an English production. That was the main reason why I entered the cinema and was delighted.
The film is a mix of zombie horror and romantic comedy, with a lively rhythm that gives no rest. Excellent scenes of suspense, with a perfect dose of humor. Dialogues, entanglements and gags that work, making a fun and entertaining film
Shaun and Liz are going through a difficult time in the relationship. Wherever they go, they're accompanied by Ed, Shaun's inseparable friend. They always go to their favourite place, the bar called Winchester. Shaun's whole life seems like a disaster. He is almost thirty years old, still working in an appliance store, has a bad relationship with his stepfather and has not visited his mother. After making another mistake, Liz cuts the relationship off. The next day, all of London is full of zombies. Together with his friend, Ed, he has a plan to find his mother, his girlfriend and take refuge in the safest place of all - the Winchester Bar. Will he make it? Will they be saved? Will they be eaten by zombies? You'll enjoy it very much, because killing zombies has never been so much fun.
From the first scene, the presentation of the characters takes place inside the Winchester bar. Liz asks Shaun to spend more time with her. There's also Ed and Liz's friends. We see the strong friendship between Shaun and Ed. Friendship that when the end of the film comes, not even death can destroy.
Ed, is the nice, joking, crazy and messy friend, an adult without a job, who spends all day playing video games, as if he were a teenager. But with a noble heart, Shaun's only true friend. They are typical characters of failures, who circumstances make them heroes.
There are several unforgettable scenes and sequences, but one of the most remembered is the shot of Shaun leaving the house, to go to the store. There are two, but the second time occurs the day after the break-up of the love affair. Shaun leaves the house and goes to the store, the same route he took the day before, stumbling on the same sidewalk, going like a zombie, not realizing that the streets are full of zombies.
Another memorable scene is when they face the owner of the Winchester, who has turned into a zombie. Everyone beats the zombie to the beat of a song by the music group Queen. But the funniest one, happens when the group of survivors, practice the movements, gestures and noises of the zombies, to be able to walk among them and arrive safely to the Bar.
Filmmaker Edgar Wright had achieved remarkable success on British television by making several comedies. It was in those television comedies that he met Simon Pegg. Shaun of the Dead was his film debut and he did very well.
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are great friends in real life, they're the stars of the film. Simon plays Shaun and Nick plays Ed. They have incredible chemistry on screen. They're perfect actors for this kind of movie.
Other actors who complete the cast are Jessica Haynes, Simon Pegg's partner in the comedy Spaced. Kate Ashfield plays Liz and Bill Nighy is Shaun's stepfather. In this film he makes a brief appearance, playing a member of another group of survivors.
Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost met some time later, to complete what would become their trilogy. This was their first, where they paid tribute to the horror genre, bringing comedy into it. They would later make Hot Fuzz, an action comedy, as a tribute to the films of friends, in the style of Lethal Weapon. The trilogy ended with the film The End of the World, at that time, mixing comedy with science fiction.
If you want to laugh, while killing some zombies, I recommend you see it. It's a great movie to pass the time.
