Sam Esmail earned my admiration ( and that of many viewers) with the series Mr. Robot. It's his best-known project, although Homecoming and The Resort also received accolades. A filmmaker experienced in TV series is the ideal choice to direct a film divided into chapters.

The film's structure corresponds to its source material, the bestselling novel by writer Rumaan Alam, which was a bestseller some three years ago. So this is the film adaptation of the book. I haven't read it, I already said in my Scorsese movie post that I read very little this year.

Back on topic, sure there are differences from the original text, but after watching the movie, it made me want to look up the novel. It made me reflect on many things, plus Esmail brings his style to it. There is his characteristic framing, camera movements and the extraordinary handling of suspense with parallel editing. It's his stamp, his signature, something I like about filmmakers who distinguish themselves from the rest.

Esmail has something pending with the public. For about four years now, he has been working on another remake of Battlestar Galactica, for me one of the best science fiction series. In several promotional interviews for the film, he has responded that this project is still in progress. This is good news. Come on Esmail, I trust you.

Sam Esmail se ganó mi admiración ( y la de muchos espectadores) con la serie Mr. Robot. Es su proyecto más conocido, aunque Homecoming y The Resort también recibieron elogios. Un cineasta curtido en series de televisión es la elección ideal para dirigir una película dividida en capítulos.

La estructura de la película corresponde a su material de origen, la novela superventas del escritor Rumaan Alam, que fue un éxito de ventas hace unos tres años. Así que ésta es la adaptación cinematográfica del libro. No lo he leído, ya dije en mi post de la película de Scorsese que este año lei muy poco.

Volviendo al tema, seguro que hay diferencias con el texto original, pero después de ver la película, me dieron ganas de buscar la novela. Me hizo reflexionar sobre muchas cosas, además Esmail le aporta su estilo. Están sus característicos encuadres, los movimientos de cámara y el extraordinario manejo del suspense con el montaje paralelo. Es su sello, su firma, algo que me gusta de los cineastas que se distinguen del resto.

Esmail tiene algo pendiente con el público. Desde hace unos cuatro años, trabaja en otro remake de Battlestar Galactica, para mí una de las mejores series de ciencia ficción. En varias entrevistas promocionales de la película, ha respondido que este proyecto sigue en marcha. Es una buena noticia. Vamos Esmail, confío en ti.

Fear. After the first half hour of the film, I was reminded again of Michael Moore's documentary Bowling for Columbine. In that production it was explained that the American has the culture of fear in its roots. Fear has been part of that society since the first settlers arrived. Fear of everything that is strange. Fear of the Indians who owned the land, fear of themselves so they had to equip themselves with many weapons, fear of the freedom of the slaves, fear of the Russians, fear of the Muslims, fear of the immigrants.

Fear is also used by politicians to manipulate. Not only in America, all over the world today the fear system has spread as a way to have control. In a world moving towards the socially correct, add fear and technological dependence, and I believe the apocalypse is closer. A scenario like the one depicted in the movie (and book) is very feasible.

Leaving the World Behind addresses very current issues, in a very subtle way, using a micro-cosmos, formed by a group of people, very small, two families. Both face the worst of fears: the fear of the unknown, the fear of the end of our days, the fear of not knowing what is going to happen. That feeling that something bad is very close is maintained throughout the film. I recommend that you don't look for answers in the movie. You will have to fill in the answers yourself. Many have complained about the ending, but I loved it, it goes along with everything told.

All empires have an expiration date. They have an end. History has proven it. Roman Empire, British, Spanish. Portuguese, Chinese, Russian, French. For centuries empires have risen and collapsed. Why should it be any different now? The American empire seems to be in debacle. What would happen in the event of an apocalypse? A coordinated attack? A collapse? No access to the net, to satellites? Are they prepared for the end of an era? What would happen next?

Arm yourself. Hold on. Survive. Protect yourself and forget the world. Leave the world, the others, behind. It is none of your business. There is a secondary character who explains very well what will happen. To return to our savage roots, in a nation divided and with widespread fear, would be to return to the law of the strongest. Every man for himself.

Miedo. Tras la primera media hora de la película, volví a recordar el documental Bowling for Columbine, de Michael Moore. En esa producción se explicaba que el estadounidense tiene la cultura del miedo en sus raíces. El miedo forma parte de esa sociedad desde que llegaron los primeros colonos. Miedo a todo lo que es extraño. Miedo a los indios que poseían la tierra, miedo a ellos mismos por lo que tuvieron que equiparse con muchas armas, miedo a la libertad de los esclavos, miedo a los rusos, miedo a los musulmanes, miedo a los inmigrantes.

El miedo también es utilizado por los políticos para manipular. No sólo en América, en todo el mundo hoy en día el sistema del miedo se ha propagado como una forma de tener control. En un mundo que avanza hacia lo socialmente correcto, añadimos el miedo y la dependencia tecnológica, y creo que el apocalipsis está más cerca. Un escenario como el que se describe en la película (y libro) es muy factible.

Dejando el mundo atrás aborda temas muy actuales, de forma muy sutil, utilizando un micro-cosmos, formado por un grupo de personas, muy pequeño, dos familias. Ambas se enfrentan al peor de los miedos: el miedo a lo desconocido, el miedo al fin de nuestros días, el miedo a no saber qué va a pasar. Esa sensación de que algo malo está muy cerca se mantiene durante toda la película. Te recomiendo que no busques respuestas en la película. Tendrás que completar las respuestas tú mismo. Muchos se han quejado del final, pero a mi me ha encantado, va acorde con todo lo contado.

Todos los imperios tienen fecha de caducidad. Tienen un final. La historia lo ha demostrado. Imperio Romano, Británico, Español. Portugués, chino, ruso, francés. Durante siglos los imperios han surgido y se han derrumbado. ¿Por qué iba a ser diferente ahora? El imperio estadounidense parece estar en debacle. ¿Qué ocurriría en caso de apocalipsis? ¿Un ataque coordinado? ¿Un colapso? ¿Sin acceso a la red, a los satélites? ¿Están preparados para el fin de una era? ¿Qué ocurriría después?

Armarse. Espera. Sobrevive. Protégete y olvídate del mundo. Deja el mundo, a los demás, atrás. No es asunto tuyo. Hay un personaje secundario que explica muy bien lo que ocurrirá. Volver a nuestras raíces salvajes, en una nación dividida y con el miedo generalizado, sería volver a la ley del más fuerte. Sálvese quien pueda.
