Awarded at the Sitges Festival, the new film written and directed by Brandon Cronenberg (Yes, the son of David Cronenberg) will surely become a cult film.

What is the plot?
Tasya Vos is a woman who works for a secret organization that uses brain implants to take control of other people, thus committing the murders they do. In the last of the missions, despite having a weapon, Tasya Vos prefers to execute the assassination in an extremely bloody manner. The work seems to be affecting her. In the next mission, Tasya must take control of Colin Tate, boyfriend of John Parse's daughter, owner of a data mining corporation, who is the target of the assassination. But everything gets complicated when the host body seems to be taking control. A mental battle between Colin and Tasya, where extreme violence is the main protagonist.

Brandon Cronenberg had made it clear with Antiviral, his first film, that his main influence is his own father. He knows that his last name is in the history of cinema, due to a very defined style of films. Instead of following other paths, the young filmmaker is proud of the legacy of his father, the extraordinary David Cronenberg.
Antiviral did not have the results, at the level of specialized critics, but it was his debut. Like Possessor, it was written and directed by Brandon. And while his father's great influence is evident, each has traits that give it the young filmmaker's personal tone.
Possessor has been screened at two festivals, in Sitges, where it was awarded for best film and best director. And it was at the Sundance festival as a film selected for competition.
The film is a psychological thriller of science fiction, with elements of the horror genre and a large dose of ultragore, which lovers of these disturbing stories, we will totally love the proposal.

I think Brandon, makes an elegant direction and hypnotizes us with a series of images that will be unpleasant for many people. It's not a film for everyone. Scenes of extreme violence can make even the most sensitive viewers uncomfortable.
David Cronenberg can be proud of his son, not only does he follow in his footsteps as a filmmaker, but he has the creativity to make dystopian and terrifying stories, which will become cult works. The film reminds us of Cronenberg Sr.'s classics, such as Scanners, Existenz, Shivers, and even The Fly.
The film absorbed me from the beginning, in that disturbing but enveloping atmosphere. The work of the director of photography was done by Karim Hussain, known for the film "Subconscious Cruelty". Complemented by music that keeps us attentive to everything that happens on the screen.
The art direction, sets and special effects, all done in a simple way, was another thing that I loved about this film. The design of the artifacts, using simple things, but that bring credibility to the whole aspect that science fiction encompasses. Again, simple effects are used to achieve more shocking and terrifying scenes. This is of great value to me, tired of so much green screen cinema, I leave myself at the feet of films made in a simpler way but with interesting stories.

Andrea Riseborough plays Tasya Vos, the agent working for the organization. She is an assassin who uses the bodies of others to carry out her missions. She is going through a difficult situation with her partner, has a young son, but her job keeps her away. The brain damage from her missions seems to be affecting her, making her lose control when she enters Tate's mind. In other reviews I have written very well about this actress, I find her to be an excellent woman in her performances, I still remember her for her role in the mini series Zero Zero.
Actor Christopher Abbott plays Colin Tate, the body that will be taken over by Tasya to murder the owner of a data mining company. He will have to face a physical and mental struggle against Tasya, for control of his actions, which seem to whet the host's murderous appetite. The actor has worked more in television, with recurrent roles in series such as Girls, or Law and Order. I was happy with his work, although I saw him in the third season of El Pecador and was not convinced, besides his great resemblance to Jon Nieve.
The fabulous Jennifer Jason Leigh plays Girder, Tasya's superior within the organization. An ambiguous character with a halo of mystery throughout the film. We must remember that she was the protagonist of Existenz, one of David Cronenberg's films.
Among the other supporting actors, we find Rossif Sutherland playing Michael Vos, Tasya's partner, and the great Sean Bean playing the owner of the data mining corporation that Tasya is supposed to kill. Will we see Sean killed again in the movie?

Definitely Possessor is an especially nice movie for sick minds like mine. The atmosphere, the enigmatic sequences inside the lab from where you take control of people's minds, plus the delicious scenes of violence and gore.
I am happy because the son of a great filmmaker will follow in his father's footsteps, with a type of cinema that is one of my favorites. Brandon Cronenberg gives us a brutal ending that few dare to make in this era. I am completely sure that in a few years, this filmmaker will offer us a true masterpiece, as his father did with the extraordinary film Crash in 1996.
I recommend him only if he likes this kind of cinema.
