It's been over a year since the release of Elvis, directed by Baz Lurhman, with Austin Butler resurrecting the image of the so-called King of Rock. A film in which Tom Hanks played Colonel Parker, whose accent brought him a lot of criticism. I loved that movie. Those who read my post about Elvis know that it was one of my favorites.

I remember pointing out in my post that when Elvis met Priscilla, she was underage and the Elvis movie didn't scrutinize that. When they met, the age difference was wide. A teenager of about fourteen. To me that's a child. I think a good biopic should address all facets of the character, his light side and also his dark side.

Sofia Coppola is in charge of bringing us the biopic about the woman behind the myth. Priscilla Presley. Focusing on the woman who conquered the heart of the most desired man of the time. The man who made many women have wild dreams. To do so, it takes the memoirs written by Priscilla herself to write the script and also to be in the director's chair.

Hace más de un año que se estrenó Elvis, dirigida por Baz Lurhman, con Austin Butler resucitando la imagen del llamado Rey del Rock. Una película en la que Tom Hanks interpretaba al Coronel Parker, cuyo acento le acarreó muchas críticas. A mí me encantó esa película. Los que leyeron mi post sobre Elvis saben que era una de mis favoritas.

Recuerdo que señalé en mi post que cuando Elvis conoció a Priscilla, ella era menor de edad y la película de Elvis no escudriñó eso. Cuando se conocieron, la diferencia de edad era amplia. Una adolescente de unos catorce años. Para mí eso es una niña. Creo que un buen biopic debe abordar todas las facetas del personaje, su lado luminoso y también su lado oscuro.

Sofía Coppola se encarga de traernos el biopic sobre la mujer detrás del mito. Priscilla Presley. Poniendo el foco en la mujer que conquistó el corazón del hombre más deseado de la época. El hombre que hizo que muchas mujeres tuvieran sueños salvajes. Para ello, toma las memorias escritas por la propia Priscilla para escribir el guión y también para estar en la silla del director.

The filmmaker has disenchanted me over time. I liked The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation. Other of his films I liked, without being fascinated by them, I still trusted Coppola. But with On the Rocks I'm feeling little patience with his projects. Maybe his style no longer appeals to me. His progre tendency has me jaded. I don't know. When I finished watching Priscilla I asked myself how could I put up with this?

I'm not going to throw stones against the filmmaker, she already has enough haters. I have written post where I value her performance in The Godfather 3. Movie where she was butchered with her performance as Michael Corleone's daughter. Although I remember the news of that time without internet, where they said that she was only given the character because she was the daughter of the director.

Sometimes I have to agree with those who criticize the work of this filmmaker. She has earned it. With Priscilla, she has played the progressive savior and that is counterproductive. In several interviews she has made an analogy between Priscilla's life, always under the shadow of Elvis, with her own life, saying that she was under the shadow of her father. There is a big difference. She didn't have a choice to be her father's daughter. Priscilla did have a choice who to fall in love with. You have to tell it like it is.

Another point where Sofia Coppola is wrong is in saying that she has achieved everything on her own. Her biggest successes and most successful films were when she was married to Spike Jonze. Someone who is also vital to her professional growth. Already the name Coppola gave her a certain influence. If she didn't want to be under the shadow of her surname, she could have done like her cousin Nicolas Cage and taken another one, couldn't she?

La cineasta me ha desencantado con el tiempo. Me gustaron The Virgin Suicides y Lost in Translation. Otras de sus películas me gustaron, sin llegar a fascinarme, seguía confiando en Coppola. Pero con On the Rocks estoy sintiendo poca paciencia con sus proyectos. Quizás su estilo ya no me atrae. Su tendencia progre me tiene hastiado. No sé. Cuando terminé de ver Priscilla me pregunté ¿cómo he podido aguantar esto?

No voy a tirar piedras contra la cineasta, ya tiene suficientes haters. He escrito post donde valoro su actuación en El Padrino 3. Película donde la masacraron con su interpretación de hija de Michael Corleone. Aunque recuerdo las noticias de aquella época sin internet, donde decían que sólo le habían dado el personaje por ser la hija del director.

A veces tengo que dar la razón a los que critican el trabajo de esta cineasta. Ella se lo gana a pulso. Con Priscilla, se ha puesto de salvadora progresista y eso sí que es contraproducente. En varias entrevistas ha hecho una analogía entre la vida de Priscilla, siempre bajo la sombra de Elvis, con su propia vida, diciendo que ella estaba bajo la sombra de su padre. Hay una gran diferencia. Ella no tuvo elección de ser la hija de su padre. Priscilla sí tuvo elección de quién enamorarse. Hay que contar las cosas como son.

Otro punto en el que Sofia Coppola se equivoca es en decir que lo ha conseguido todo sola. Sus mayores éxitos y sus películas más exitosas fueron cuando estaba casada con Spike Jonze. Alguien que también es vital para su crecimiento profesional. Ya el nombre Coppola le daba cierta influencia. Si no quería estar bajo la sombra de su apellido, podría haber hecho como su primo Nicolas Cage y haberse puesto otro, ¿no?

Priscilla is another bipic that disappointed me. It shows a toxic side of Elvis. Which of course he had. Someone with those addictions, had to have behaviors that affected the marital relationship. But beyond showing some scenes where the King loses control, and the apparent suffering of Priscilla, before the alleged abuse, addictions, jealousy and loneliness to which she is subjected for being the partner of an icon. Everything is so superficial that it is hard to believe what we see on screen.

Just as the movie Elvis showed us one side of the coin and swept some dirty laundry under the rug. This one does the same, but from the point of view of the female character. Lisa Marie Presly, daughter of Elvis and Priscilla, publicly disagreed when the filmmaker announced the filming of the movie. What would her opinion be if she had lived to see it?

Cailee Spaeny stands out as Priscilla. Her character has enough charm to fill the screen. She shows sensitivity, a key element to the point of view she is trying to convey. Coppola knows how to bring out her female characters and Spaeny was the right actress. I can't say the same for Jacob Elordi. His Elvis is one of the worst impersonations I've ever seen. I couldn't believe it. Every time he was on screen he made me cry with laughter. The shadow of Butler's performance as Elvis also influences my perception of this parapet.

There is something worse than Jacob Elordi's Elvis. The group of characters that make up his entourage. There is not one scene where they are all playing around like five year olds. Goofing around, giggling like idiots. Jumping around, making faces, playing games. What the hell is this?

Priscilla has no magic. The main character stands out in a story that isn't solid enough for my taste. To do this it's better to do nothing. However, Generation Z is going to like it. It may even traumatize them, as everything affects them.

Priscilla es otro bipic que me decepcionó. Muestra un lado tóxico de Elvis. Que por supuesto tenía. Alguien con esas adicciones, tenía que tener comportamientos que afectaran a la relación conyugal. Pero más allá de mostrar algunas escenas donde el Rey pierde el control, y el aparente sufrimiento de Priscilla, ante los supuestos abusos, adicciones, celos y soledad a la que es sometida por ser la pareja de un icono. Todo es tan superficial que cuesta creer lo que vemos en pantalla.

Igual que la película Elvis nos mostraba una cara de la moneda y escondía algunos trapos sucios bajo la alfombra. Ésta hace lo mismo, pero desde el punto de vista del personaje femenino. Lisa Marie Presly, hija de Elvis y Priscilla, mostró públicamente su desacuerdo cuando el cineasta anunció el rodaje de la película. ¿Cuál sería su opinión si hubiera vivido para verla?

Cailee Spaeny destaca como Priscilla. Su personaje tiene suficiente encanto para llenar la pantalla. Muestra sensibilidad, un elemento clave para el punto de vista que intenta transmitir. Coppola sabe sacar a relucir sus personajes femeninos y Spaeny era la actriz adecuada. No puedo decir lo mismo de Jacob Elordi. Su Elvis es una de las peores imitaciones que he visto. No me lo podía creer. Cada vez que salía en pantalla me hacía llorar de risa. La sombra de la actuación de Butler como Elvis también influye en mi percepción de este parapeto.

Hay algo peor que el Elvis de Jacob Elordi. El grupo de personajes que forman su séquito. No hay ni una escena en la que estén todos jugando como niños de cinco años. Haciendo el tonto, riéndose como idiotas. Saltando, haciendo muecas, jugando. ¿Qué diablos es esto?

Priscilla no tiene magia. La protagonista destaca en una historia que no es lo suficientemente sólida para mi gusto. Para hacer esto es mejor no hacer nada. Sin embargo, a la generación Z le va a gustar. Puede que incluso les traumatice, ya que todo les afecta.
