The real case that this docu-drama deals with, as well as other similar events that occurred in the past, make me think about the crossroads that the people involved in those events, which constitute a crime in their country, had to face. If you are a person who works for a government agency in your country, specifically in the area of national security, where you must handle sensitive and secret information, which you cannot tell anyone, let alone make that information public, you have to be aware that if you violate the oath and confidentiality, you will be branded a spy and a traitor.

Now, if in that job with access to confidential documents, you realize the importance of the things that are hidden from the population. Things are kept secret that would destabilize the system, but you feel that the ordinary citizen deserves to know, because in your principles is really to defend the truth and freedom, you will be cornered between a rock and a hard place. Either you continue to put up with it and be part of the system that hides information, betraying yourself, or you violate your oath and bring that information out into the open.

These are very difficult choices. If you choose the first path, nothing will happen, but if you go the other way, they will cause you serious problems. which one would you choose? I'm sure most of them would keep quiet, out of fear or because they are so adapted to the system and so selfish that they don't give a damn about principles. Fortunately there will always be some daring person, who for many will be a traitor, for others a David facing the Goliath of power. They will pay a high price, but they will be remembered and the cowards will be silently forgotten by history.

What motivates them to go against? For governments and people who support them, they will be traitors, people who hate their country, etc, that is what they will say in their statements. But is it true? Maybe it is because they really love their country and they wanted the population to know serious and serious things, things that are hidden from them and that everybody should know. It may be that in reality these people, seeing all the truths on a daily basis, are worried about what might happen to a population that is ignorant of many things and that their rulers want to keep distracted.

Si usted es una persona que trabaja para un organismo gubernamental de su país, específicamente en el área de seguridad nacional, donde debe manejar información sensible y secreta, que no puede contarle a nadie y mucho menos hacer pública esa información, tiene que estar consciente que si viola el juramento y la confidencialidad, será tildado de espía y traidor.

Ahora bien, si en ese trabajo con acceso a documentos confidenciales, te das cuenta de la importancia de las cosas que se ocultan a la población. Se mantienen en secreto cosas que desestabilizarían el sistema, pero sientes que el ciudadano de a pie merece saberlo, porque en tus principios está realmente defender la verdad y la libertad, te veras acorralado entre la espada y la pared. O sigues aguantando y formando parte del sistema que oculta información, traicionándote a ti mismo, o violas tu juramento y sacas esa información a la luz pública.

Son decisiones muy difíciles. Si eliges el primer camino, no pasará nada, pero si vas por el otro, te causarán graves problemas. ¿Cuál elegirían? Estoy seguro de que la mayoría se callaría, por miedo o porque están tan adaptados al sistema y son tan egoístas que les importan un bledo los principios. Afortunadamente siempre habrá algún osado, que para muchos será un traidor, para otros será un David enfrentado al Goliat del poder. Pagarán un alto precio, pero serán recordados y en cambio los cobardes serán silenciosamente olvidados por la historia.

¿Qué les motiva a ir en contra? Para los gobiernos y las personas que los apoyan, serán traidores, personas que odian a su país, etc, eso es lo que dirán en sus declaraciones. Pero, ¿es cierto? Tal vez sea porque realmente aman a su país y querían que la población supiera cosas serias y graves, cosas que se les ocultan y que todo el mundo debería saber. Puede ser que en realidad estas personas, viendo todas las verdades a diario, estén preocupadas por lo que pueda pasarle a una población que ignora muchas cosas y a la que sus gobernantes quieren mantener distraída.

Someone is trained and educated to always be on the side of the law, to protect and work in the service of his nation. He has the illusion that he will be useful and that everything he was taught will be fulfilled. But in practice everything is different and the shock will be hard, when he realizes that he is part of a gear of lies. The disappointment will be enormous and it will also lead him to think, if they are hiding this from others, what other things, at a higher level, are they hiding from him.

Anyone involved in a similar situation will have to make decisions based on their moral values, their principles and what they believe to be the right thing to do. When the consequences of your decision come knocking at your door, you may regret it, but nothing will ever be the same again, you just have to move on, fight and be consistent with what you have done.

The HBO film is directed by Tina Satter, who I think does an excellent job of staging. I think it's her filmmaking debut, but she was the best choice to direct it, as she has an extensive background in the theater world, plus the film is an adaptation of is This A Room, a play she directed and which apparently was quite successful.

Although the original source of the story is theatrical, at the level of cinematographic narration it manages to work, with the insertion of flashbacks and scenes with effects that do not need to be explained, because their meaning is immediately understood.

Of course you can tell it comes from a play, the action of the film takes place all in one day, practically everything happens in a single location as it focuses on the moment when the FBI searches the house and proceeds to the arrest of Reality Winner. I think that's also the impact of the story, because as we are warned at the beginning of the film, they used the actual transcripts of the FBI, which recorded the entire operation from the moment they arrive at Reality's house, where they will spend hours. Therefore, there is a lot of reality reflected in both the film and the play.

Alguien es entrenado y educado para estar siempre del lado de la ley, para proteger y trabajar al servicio de su nación. Tiene la ilusión de que será útil y de que todo lo que le enseñaron se cumplirá. Pero en la práctica todo es diferente y el choque será duro, cuando se dé cuenta de que forma parte de un engranaje de mentiras. La decepción será enorme y también le llevará a pensar, si están ocultando esto a los demás, qué otras cosas, a un nivel mayor, le estarán ocultando a él.

Cualquiera que se vea envuelto en una situación similar tendrá que tomar decisiones basadas en sus valores morales, en sus principios y en lo que considera que es lo correcto. Cuando las consecuencias de tu decisión llamen a tu puerta, puede que te arrepientas, pero nada volverá a ser igual, sólo tienes que seguir adelante, luchar y ser consecuente con lo que has hecho.

La película de HBO está dirigida por Tina Satter, que creo que hace un excelente trabajo de puesta en escena. Creo que es su debut haciendo cine, pero era la mejor elección para dirigirla, ya que tiene una amplia trayectoria en el mundo del teatro, además la película es una adaptación de is This A Room, obra que ella dirigió y que al parecer tuvo bastante éxito.

Aunque la fuente original de la historia es teatral, a nivel de narración cinematográfica logra funcionar, con la inserción de flashbacks y escenas con efectos que no necesitan ser explicados, porque su significado se entiende de inmediato.

Por supuesto se nota que proviene de una obra de teatro, la acción de la película transcurre toda en un mismo día, prácticamente todo sucede en una única localización ya que se centra en el momento en que el FBI registra la casa y procede a la detención de Reality Winner. Creo que ese es también el impacto de la historia, ya que como se nos advierte al principio de la película, se utilizaron las transcripciones reales del FBI, que grabó toda la operación desde el momento en que llegan a la casa de Reality, donde pasarán horas. Por tanto, hay mucho de realidad reflejada tanto en la película como en la obra.
