Relic is an Australian film that I saw last year, but had forgotten to write a review of it. While looking for a new movie to watch, I came across the poster and remembered this psychological drama/horror film whose story takes place in a house that appears to be haunted.

A few days ago I also did a review about a haunted house, where a funeral home was operating. It was an Argentinian film. These two productions only have in common the use of a house with the presence of something supernatural. But in terms of story and development they are totally different. Relic being far superior in all aspects.
The film was very well received by professional critics and was successfully screened at last year's Sitges Film Festival, receiving a special mention for the directing work. In Australia it was nominated for Best Film at the most important Australian film awards. Even the National Board of Review named it as one of the best independent films of last year.
Is it as good as they say? It all depends on what you're looking for. It's in the horror genre, but if you're expecting frenetic horror, this won't be the film for you. It depends on what kind of horror you want to see. For me it's a family drama with psychological horror. Like the last one I saw a few days ago, it has a slow pace and takes its time telling the story. However, in the last part, I think the final half hour, the supernatural takes over the narrative and takes a fast pace.
Did I like it? Yes, I liked it. There were scenes disturbing enough to keep me on edge. I've found that I find old people terrifying in these types of movies. I've seen several horror movies in the last few months where there are elderly characters and I think they convey fear. Some people are terrified of clowns in movies, in my case it's the elderly. I think I have an explanation for that, I'll tell you about it later.

Hace unos días también hice una reseña sobre una casa encantada, donde funcionaba una funeraria. Era un film argentino. Estas dos producciones solo tienen en común el uso de una casa con presencia de algo sobrenatural. Pero en cuanto a historia y desarrollo son totalmente diferentes. Siendo Relic muy superior en todos los aspectos.
El film fue recibido muy bien por la crítica profesional y tuvo una exitosa proyección en el Festival de Sitges del año pasado, recibiendo una mención especial por el trabajo de dirección. En Australia estuvo nominada a mejor película en los Premios de Cine más importantes de ese país. Incluso la National Board of Review la catalogo como una de las mejores películas independientes del pasado año.
¿Es tan buena como dicen? Todo depende de lo que tú estés buscando. Es del género de Horror, pero si estas esperando el terror frenético, esta no será la película adecuada. Depende del tipo de terror que quieras ver. Para mí es un drama familiar con terror psicológico. Al igual que la última que vi hace unos días, tiene un ritmo lento y se toma su tiempo en contarnos la historia. Eso sí, su ultima parte, creo que la media hora final, lo sobrenatural se apodera de la narración y toma un ritmo rápido.
¿Me gusto? A mí si me gusto. Hay escenas que fueron lo suficientemente perturbadoras para mantenerme atento a los acontecimientos. Me he dado cuenta que los ancianos me parecen aterradores en este tipo de películas. He visto los últimos meses varias películas de terror donde hay personajes ancianos y creo que transmiten miedo. Hay gente que le aterran los payasos en las películas, en mi caso son los ancianos. Creo que tengo una explicación para eso, se las contare más adelante.
Who is the director?
Before I tell you the plot of the film, I want to mention that this is the first feature film by a young filmmaker named Natalie Erika James. She is 32 years old, Australian, but she was born in the USA and has Japanese origins. She received the special mention in Sitges and her work as a director has received a lot of praise. I agree with the positive things that have been written and said about her. This is her first feature film, but she has previously written and directed several short films in the horror genre, which she seems to like very much. But she is not inexperienced in her work, she has been working on different short film projects since 2010 as second assistant director. I should also add that she was part of the additional Crew of the brutal film Upgrade, written and directed by Leigh Whannell and which I reviewed quite some time ago. A great indie sci-fi movie that surprised me and that I recommend you to look for.
Something that has left me a bit thrown off, was that I looked up this up and coming filmmaker's instagram and she only has six thousand followers. How is it possible that this talented woman doesn't have more followers? Instead, anyone who goes around showing herself in a bikini on that social network, without any talent, just showing off her body, has hundreds of thousands of followers. This world is really messed up. Those who should be influencers, examples of new generations, go unnoticed. Antes de decirles cuál es la trama de la película, quiero hacer mención que se trata del primer largometraje de una joven cineasta llamada Natalie Erika James. Tiene 32 años de edad, es australiana y tiene ascendía japonesa. Ella recibió la mención especial en Sitges y su trabajo como directora ha recibido muchos elogios. Yo estoy de acuerdo con lo positivo que se escrito y dicho de ella. Es su primer largometraje, pero ha escrito y dirigió anteriormente varios cortometrajes del género de terror, que parece gustarle mucho. Pero no es una inexperta en su trabajo, ha estado desde el año 2010 trabajando en diferentes proyectos de cortometrajes como segundo asistente de dirección. También debo agregar que ella fue parte del additional Crew de la brutal película Upgrade, escrita y dirigida por Leigh Whannell y de la cual hice reseña hace bastante tiempo. Una gran película de ciencia ficción independiente que me sorprendió y les recomiendo buscarla.
Algo que me ha dejado algo descolocado, fue que busque el instagram de esta prometedora cineasta y tiene solo seis mil seguidores. ¿Cómo es posible que esta mujer con talento no tenga más seguidores? En cambio, cualquiera que ande mostrándose en bikini en esa red social, sin talento para nada, solo mostrar el cuerpo, tiene cientos de miles de seguidores. Realmente este mundo está mal. Los que deberían ser influencers, ejemplos de nuevas generaciones, pasan desapercibidos. What is the plot of Relic?
Kay receives a call from the police in the town where her mother lives, notifying her that the old woman has disappeared. She must travel with her teenage daughter Sam to the house. When they arrive at the place, everything seems to be in order, it does not seem that someone has entered to steal just some details that make suspect something wrong, besides a strange stain on the top, a kind of black mold. They settle into the house, Sam talks to a young neighbor friend who has some disability, but they have been friends for years and he tells him that his grandmother is acting strangely. The next day and as if nothing has happened, Edna, the elderly woman and Kay's mother, shows up at the house, barefoot and with no sign of knowing where she has been. Edna appears to be suffering from Alzheimer's and senile dementia, hence her behavior. As Kay ponders what to do with her mother, she will have nightmares that will upset her and strange noises begin to be heard in the house. Something is happening there and Edna's behavior will become increasingly disturbing. What is happening? Is Edna going crazy? What are those noises in the house? What is the shadow? Is it reality or a figment of Edna's imagination?

Mientras Kay analiza que hará con su madre, tendrá pesadillas que la alteraran y unos ruidos extraños en la casa comenzaran a ser escuchados. Algo esta ocurriendo en ese lugar y el comportamiento de Edna será cada vez más perturbador. ¿Qué está pasando? ¿Esta Edna enloqueciendo? ¿Qué son esos ruidos en la casa? ¿Qué es la sombra? ¿Es realidad o producto de la imaginación de Edna?
There are several elements of the film that I liked as they are brought up on screen. The main one is the family drama of these three women, three different generations, who must deal with the problems that arise when old age begins to play havoc with the mind of one of them. In this case Edna, the old woman who seems to suffer from Alzheimer's, her erratic behavior, the forgetfulness of things and the notes she has pinned in various places in the house, confirm it.
This is one of the filmmaker's greatest successes, to show this drama that can happen to many families with a very old relative. Wrapped in supernatural phenomena and terror, but what can be more terrifying than ending up old and sick? It is at this point where I explain to you why I find old people in movies terrifying. I think it's because of my inner fear of reaching such an advanced age, where illness will make a mess of me. That terrifies me much more than death.
That's what I liked and scared me the most about this movie, I didn't feel terror at all with the scenes that seek to startle the viewer, not even with its final part, which is beautifully terrifying. I felt the fear with Edna's scenes, with her behavior. To see how a person can change and act in such a terrifying way, because of a mental illness, that is true terror. To imagine that any of us can get to that point, it sends chills down my spine.
I think those were the real intentions of the director, who writes the script with Christian White. Another factor is the good setting in which the story takes place. It manages to convey a strange feeling inside the house. With greater emphasis in its final part, where the claustrophobic and disturbing atmosphere is intensified, with notable references to other films about haunted houses, but which are reinforced by the performances of the three protagonists. The cinematography is the work of a friend of the director, Charlie Sarroff, who has worked with her on her short films.
For me the haunted house and paranormal phenomena take a back seat, I am more interested in the family story and how all human beings are doomed to have time take its toll on us as we age. Edna's fate, is also the fate of her daughter Kay, whose daughter Sam will also have the same fate. It is something we cannot fight. There is no magic pill for that.
I don't want to tell you anything important about the story, I don't want to drop a spoiler or describe any of the best scenes. I don't want to ruin the viewing of the movie, I think I've said enough to make the movie grab your attention and make up your mind to watch it. At the end of the post, as always, I will leave the trailer, but I suggest you don't watch it. It's better if you watch the movie without knowing much more, so you can enjoy it.
Hay varios elementos del film que me gustaron como fueron planteados en pantalla. El principal es el drama familiar de estas tres mujeres, tres generaciones distintas, que deben afrontar los problemas que se presentan cuando la vejez comienza a hacer estragos en la mente de una de ellas. En esta caso Edna, la anciana que parece estar sufriendo de Alzheimer, su errático comportamiento, olvidarse de las cosas y las notas que tiene pegada en varias partes de la casa, así lo confirman.
Este es uno de los mayores aciertos de la cineasta, el mostrar este drama que puede ocurrir a muchas familias con un familiar muy anciano. Envuelto con fenómenos sobrenaturales y terror. ¿Pero que mas terrorífico que terminar anciano y enfermo? Es en este punto que les explico el motivo por el cual los ancianos en las películas me parecen aterradores. Creo que se debe a mi miedo interno a llegar a una edad tan avanzada, donde enfermedades hagan desastre con mi mente. Eso me aterra mucho más que la muerte.
Eso fue lo que me gusto y más me asusto de este film, para nada sentí terror con las escenas que buscan el sobresalto del espectador, ni siquiera con su parte final, que es hermosamente aterradora. Yo sentí miedo fue con las escenas de Edna, con su comportamiento. Ver como una persona puede cambiar y actuar de una manera tan aterradora, a causa de una enfermedad mental, eso es verdadero terror. Imaginar que cualquiera de nosotros podemos llegar a ese punto, me causa escalofríos.
Creo que esas fueron las verdaderas intenciones de la directora, quien escribe el guion junto Christian White. Otro del factor es la buena ambientación donde se desarrolla la historia. Se logra transmitir una sensación extraña dentro de la casa. Con mayor énfasis en su aparte final, donde el ambiente claustrofóbico y perturbador se intensifica, con notables referencias a otras películas sobre casas encantadas, pero que se ven reforzadas pro las actuaciones de las tres protagonistas. La fotografía está a cargo de un amigo de la directora, Charlie Sarroff, que ha trabajo con ella en sus cortometrajes.
Para mi la casa encantada y los fenómenos paranormales pasan a segundo plano, me interesa más la historia familiar y como todos los seres humanos estamos condenados a que el tiempo nos pasa factura a medida que nos hacemos viejos. El destino de Edna, es también el destino de su hija Kay, cuya hija Sam tendrá también el mismo destino. Es algo contra lo que no podemos luchar. No existe una píldora mágica para eso.
No quiero contar nada importante de la historia, no quiero soltar un spoiler ni describirte ninguna de las mejores escenas. No quiero arruinar el visionado de la película, creo que he dicho lo suficiente para que el film pueda llamar tu atención y te decidas a verlo. Al final del post, como siempre, dejare el tráiler, pero te sugiero que no lo mires. Lo mejor es que veas el film sin saber mucho más, para que puedas disfrutarlo.
Three women are the protagonists of this story. Excellently played by three talented actresses.
Edna is played by Australian actress Robyn Nevin. In addition to being an actress, she has also worked in the past as a director. Well known in her country, she has won awards for miniseries and has a long career in film and television. In the role of Edna she made me feel horror in several scenes. When you see the film you will understand. My experience watching her on screen was disturbing. I loved her performance, you can tell how experienced she is, with a simple gesture or a change of look, she can go from being a sweet old lady to making us feel fear.
Kay is played by British actress Emily Mortimer. She is the best known of the cast. I remember her from Sorkin's series The Newsroom, where her character was unbearable. I hated her in that series, but it's something that happens to me with a lot of Sorkin's characters. In this film, she makes a change of acting register that I liked, her character is believable, the nightmares she has are motivated by the remorse she has for her father and now she has the problem of solving what to do with her mother. In the final part, the actress performs perfectly in the distressing scenes inside the house, unable to find a way out. If you haven't seen her in the series she stars in, you've surely seen her in Shutter Island or The Return of Mary Poppins. She has an extensive career in Hollywood and has participated in several horror projects, one of them was Scream 3.
Son tres mujeres las protagonistas de esta historia. Interpretada excelentemente pro tres talentosas actrices.
Edna es interpretada por la actriz australiana Robyn Nevin. Además de actriz, también ha trabajado en el pasado como directora. Conocida en su país, ha ganado premios por miniseries y tiene una larga trayectoria en cine y televisión. En el rol de Edna me hizo sentir horror en varias escenas. Cuando vean el film lo entenderán. Mi experiencia viéndola en pantalla fue perturbadora. Quede encantado con su interpretación, se nota la experiencia que tiene, con un simple gesto o un cambio de su mirada, puede pasar de ser una dulce anciana a hacernos sentir miedo.

Si no la viste la serie donde ella era protagonista, seguro la viste en Shutter Island o en El Regreso de Mary Poppins. Tiene una extensa carrera en Hollywood y ha participado en varios proyectos de terror, una de ellas fue Scream 3.
Sam is played by actress Bella Heathcote. She is Kay's young daughter, who doesn't want to leave her grandmother and is willing to move in to take care of her, but her mother doesn't want to. She soon discovers that her grandmother is very mentally ill. The actress's performance is just right enough that she doesn't clash with the rest of the cast. She is the youngest, but has a lot of experience in Australian TV series. She has also worked with Tim Burton in the film Dark Shadows. Another of her outstanding works is the film Pride and Prejudice Zombie. But where she dazzled was in the film Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, where she played Olive Byrne, the lover of the creator of the Wonder Woman comics (I recommend this film).

Relic is a good choice to watch this weekend. Psychological horror, haunted houses and, above all, family drama when senile dementia makes an appearance. Nothing is scarier than the real thing. Hence the praise for this small production and its director, a filmmaker to watch in the future. Will he continue to experiment with the horror genre? I think so.

Relic es una buena opción para ver este fin de semana. Horror psicológico, casas embrujadas y lo más importante, drama familiar cuando la demencia senil se hace presente. No hay nada más aterrador que la realidad. Por eso los elogios a esta pequeña producción y a su directora, una cineasta que debemos estar atentos a lo que nos ofrecerá en el futuro. ¿Seguirá experimentado con el género del terror? Yo creo que sí.
