I stumbled across this Chilean miniseries on Netflix. I was intrigued to watch it when I realized the lead actor was Alfredo Castro, a Chilean actor whose work I admire and whom I've followed for a long time. I had no idea what the story was about, but the actor's presence was reason enough to embark on this adventure.

Although it has eight episodes, I thought it would be too long, like some other productions, but no, not all the episodes are an hour long; some are shorter, so it's a quick watch. Besides, the story is interesting enough to keep you watching all the episodes in a row.

The plot is an adaptation, of course, of a real case I wasn't familiar with, in which some facts and names are changed, and some situations are dramatized. The crime it addresses is a case that, from what I could see and as mentioned in the series itself, shocked Chile in the 1980s, and to this day, no one has been convicted. It's highly unlikely that it will ever be fully solved. Some of the suspects have even died. The real case, which seems like it will never be fully solved, deals with the disappearance and subsequent murder of young Jorge Matute Johns. I recommend you look up information online after watching the miniseries to delve deeper into this event, shrouded in mystery.

In the story, the character has a different name, and it focuses on the police investigation, the suspects, and a mother's determination to uncover the truth and find some justice, which won't bring her son back, but perhaps will bring her some peace in a world where so many tragedies occur.

There's a key character, who also existed in real life: the priest of that town, who apparently knew who the murderer was, or one of the murderers. And because of those stupid secrets of confession, the truth has remained hidden. That infuriates me. I would have grabbed that priest and beaten the truth out of him. I really don't know how I would react to something like that, but if I had nothing to lose, I would grab him and rip the truth out of him.

I enjoyed the atmosphere and, of course, Alfredo Castro's performance as the detective in his darkest moments, unable to find answers in this case that consumes his life and career. Paulina García also stands out as a courageous mother who won't rest until she finds the truth. Impotence, pain, bitterness—she conveys all of that in her eyes.

I didn't find the police team very cohesive, only towards the end, when the faces became familiar. At first, they seemed very robotic, with many monosyllabic dialogues. Gabriel Cañas plays the tormented priest, suffering from the burden of keeping the secret of confession.

Every country seems to have a difficult case to solve, aggravated by errors in the investigation, judicial bureaucracy, and cover-ups; all of which, as consumers of stories, captivates us. With this miniseries, I learned about this case, which received a lot of media attention in Chile.

Me topé con esta miniserie chilena en Netflix. Me animé a verla al darme cuenta de que el protagonista es Alfredo Castro, un actor chileno cuyo trabajo admiro y al que sigo desde hace mucho tiempo. No tenía ni idea de qué trataba la historia, pero la presencia del actor fue razón suficiente para embarcarme en esta aventura.

Aunque tiene ocho episodios, pensé que sería demasiado larga, como otras producciones, pero no, no todos los episodios duran una hora; algunos son más cortos, así que se ve rápidamente. Además, la historia es lo suficientemente interesante como para mantenerte viendo todos los episodios seguidos.

La trama es una adaptación, por supuesto, de un caso real que desconocía, en la que se modifican algunos hechos y nombres, y se dramatizan algunas situaciones. El crimen que se aborda es un caso que, según lo que pude ver y como se menciona en la propia serie, conmocionó a Chile en la década de 1980, y hasta el día de hoy, nadie ha sido condenado. Es muy improbable que se resuelva por completo; algunos de los sospechosos incluso han fallecido. El caso real, que parece que nunca se resolverá del todo, trata sobre la desaparición y posterior asesinato del joven Jorge Matute Johns. Les recomiendo que busquen información en internet después de ver la miniserie para sumergirse en este suceso, envuelto en misterio.

En la historia, el personaje tiene otro nombre y aborda la investigación policial, los sospechosos y la determinación de una madre por descubrir la verdad y encontrar algo de justicia, que no le devolverá a su hijo, pero quizás le brinde algo de paz en un mundo donde ocurren tantas tragedias.

Hay un personaje clave, que también existió en la vida real: el sacerdote de ese pueblo, quien aparentemente sabía quién era el asesino, o uno de los asesinos. Y debido a esos estúpidos secretos de confesión, la verdad se ha mantenido oculta. Eso me enfurece. Yo habría agarrado a ese sacerdote y le habría sacado la verdad a golpes. Realmente no sé cómo reaccionaría ante algo así, pero si no tuviera nada que perder, lo agarraría y le arrancaría la verdad.

Me gustó la atmósfera y, por supuesto, la actuación de Alfredo Castro como el detective en sus momentos más oscuros, incapaz de encontrar respuestas a este caso que consume su vida y su carrera. Paulina García también destaca como una madre valiente que no descansará hasta encontrar la verdad. Impotencia, dolor, amargura. Transmite todo eso en su mirada.

No encontré al equipo policial muy cohesionado, solo hacia el final, cuando los rostros ya eran familiares. Al principio, parecían muy robóticos, con muchos diálogos monosilábicos. Gabriel Cañas interpreta al sacerdote atormentado, sufriendo por guardar el secreto de la confesión.

Cada país parece tener un caso difícil de resolver, agravado por errores en la investigación, burocracia judicial y encubrimientos; todo lo cual, como consumidores de historias, nos cautiva. Con esta miniserie, conocí este caso, que recibió mucha atención mediática en Chile.
