This is truly terrifying. There are no ghosts, no creatures from the beyond, no sudden scares; it is a documentary, and what it shows is reality. The documentary left me feeling very uneasy. What it shows, although I realize there is also a bias on the part of the director, is that everything we see, for those of us who are not from the United States, can seem like a surreal situation.

Problems between neighbors exist everywhere. In my third world country, these problems between neighbors are often resolved with extreme violence. It's something that happens everywhere. For example, last year I saw a news story about an elderly man in a city in Argentina who went to complain to some neighbors who were playing loud music. The situation became tense and he pulled out a gun. One of the men rebuked him harshly, and the man ended up shooting and killing him. Perhaps if that had happened in the United States, he could have justified it under the Stand Your Ground law.

After watching the documentary, I had to do some research. I am not American, so I am not familiar with the laws of that country and each of its states. By showing this real tragedy, the documentary aims to draw attention to the Stand Your Ground law that is in force in several states in that country.

I'm not a lawyer, but I know that these types of laws can lead to abuse when there is racial or political bias in their application. That's what this film wants to show, and it does so in a heartbreaking way. One of the novel aspects of the documentary is that it is based on footage from cameras that police officers wear on their uniforms and activate when they arrive at the scene where they are needed.

That's the scariest thing: what we see is what happened, not dramatizations. The most heartbreaking scene is when the incident occurs and everything that follows. The children. The reactions. Damn it. We don't need horror movies, we don't need Guillermo del Toro trying to scare us with a fashionable Frankenstein model, the real monsters can be our neighbors or ourselves.

What Susan Lorincz did was wrong. That woman is completely unhinged. She's the typical elderly neighbor that no one would want to have. Everything bothers her, and it's also clear that she's racist. She's a paranoid old woman. I don't know her background, I don't know if she had any traumas in the past, but she's a detestable old woman, or at least that's the image she gives in those images. Susan was bothered by the neighbors' children playing, making noise, supposedly bothering her, etc. Although the documentary makes the children seem like little angels, they probably bothered the old woman by saying things to her.

When a security system is unable to deal with these kinds of problems, violence and tragedy ensue. That's for sure. In the images, we see how the crazy lady constantly calls the police and they, in accordance with the law, try to mediate to resolve the situation. The system is so bad that it doesn't even occur to them that if that lady seems upset, something bad could happen. Well, that's the United States for you, with its good and bad sides.

This true story is interesting to study and really draws attention to these kinds of issues. The documentary was nominated for an Oscar, and I think it's one of the favorites to win. It was a mistake that someone died in this tragedy, but at the same time, the woman did something that is not against the law. I put myself in her shoes, if I were a paranoid old man (which I am), I might have done the same thing she did and I would be locked up in jail. Something I like about the United States is the right to private property and self-defense, but at the same time it's something that scares me and I'm not interested in living there. I know it's a contradiction, but that's what I think.

I think this is a documentary that Americans will understand better, but I still recommend it. It gave me chills at several points. I hope these tragedies don't happen, but the real world is very cruel.

Por ejemplo, el año pasado vi una noticia sobre un anciano en una ciudad de Argentina que fue a quejarse a unos vecinos que estaban poniendo música muy alta. La situación se tensó y él sacó una pistola. Uno de los hombres lo reprendió con dureza y el hombre terminó disparándole y matándolo. Quizás si eso hubiera ocurrido en Estados Unidos, él podría haberlo justificado con la ley Stand Your Ground (Defiende tu territorio).

Después de ver el documental, tuve que investigar un poco. No soy estadounidense, por lo que no estoy familiarizado con las leyes de ese país y de cada uno de sus estados. Al mostrar esta tragedia real, el documental quiere llamar la atención sobre la ley Stand Your Ground (Defiende tu territorio) que está en vigor en varios estados de ese país.

No soy abogado, pero sé que este tipo de leyes pueden dar lugar a abusos cuando hay sesgos raciales o políticos en su aplicación. Eso es lo que quiere mostrar esta película, y lo hace de una manera desgarradora. Una de las novedades del documental es que se basa en las grabaciones de las cámaras que los agentes de policía llevan en sus uniformes y activan cuando llegan al lugar donde se les necesita.

Eso es lo más aterrador: lo que vemos es lo que ocurrió, no dramatizaciones. La escena más desgarradora es cuando se produce el incidente y todo lo que viene después. Los niños. Las reacciones. Maldita sea. No necesitamos películas de terror, no necesitamos a Guillermo del Toro intentando asustarnos con un modelo de moda Frankenstein, los verdaderos monstruos pueden ser nuestros vecinos o nosotros mismos.

Lo que hizo Susan Lorincz está mal. Esa señora está completamente desquiciada. Es la típica vecina mayor que nadie querría tener. Todo le molesta, y también se nota que es racista. Es una vieja paranoica. No conozco sus antecedentes, no sé si tuvo traumas en el pasado, pero es una anciana detestable, o al menos esa es la imagen que da en esas imágenes. A Susan le molestaban los niños de los vecinos que jugaban, hacían ruido, supuestamente la molestaban, etc. Aunque el documental hace que los niños parezcan angelitos, probablemente molestaban a la anciana diciéndole cosas.

Cuando un sistema de seguridad no es capaz de lidiar con este tipo de problemas, se producen violencia y tragedias. Eso es seguro. En las imágenes, vemos cómo la señora loca llama constantemente a la policía y ellos, de acuerdo con la ley, intentan mediar para resolver la situación. El sistema está tan mal que ni siquiera se les pasa por la cabeza que, si esa señora parece molesta, podría pasar algo malo. Bueno, así son los Estados Unidos, con sus lados buenos y malos.

Esta historia real es interesante de estudiar y realmente llama la atención sobre este tipo de problemas. El documental fue nominado a un Óscar y creo que es uno de los favoritos para ganar. Fue un error que alguien muriera en esta tragedia, pero al mismo tiempo, la mujer hizo algo que no va en contra de la ley. Me pongo en su lugar, si yo fuera un viejo paranoico (que lo soy), quizá habría hecho lo mismo que ella y estaría encerrado en la cárcel. Algo que me gusta de Estados Unidos es el derecho a la propiedad privada y a la autodefensa, pero al mismo tiempo es algo que me da miedo y no me interesa vivir allí. Sé que es una contradicción, pero eso es lo que pienso.

Creo que es un documental que los estadounidenses entenderán mejor, pero aún así lo recomiendo. Me ha dado escalofríos en varios momentos. Espero que estas tragedias no ocurran, pero el mundo real es muy cruel.
