In previous works, the filmmaker has already offered us stories that splash many social aspects, prejudice, racism, marital crises, frivolity and power. One of my favorite films by the director is Play, it was a very raw film that lacked the palpable humor in his more recent productions.
Triangle of Sadness is a work divided into three acts. Like the shape of a triangle, the first act would be the basis to meet two of the main characters of the story, although in the following acts the narrative becomes more choral, both characters will be present throughout the film.
They are Yaya and Carl, both models who now live from being influencers, apparently she earns more money, they can afford some luxuries, but they are not really rich, many of the brands they do business with are for commercial exchange, gifts, etc. They are the new celebrities that predominate in this era, where lies and appearances are the ways the world is entertained through their mobile devices.
Lies and hypocrisy will be decisive for survival in the third act, so it is important to pay attention to the discussion with which we are introduced to the two characters, emphasizing what Carl raises, whose thoughts are a total fallacy. When fate puts him to the test, he will be the first to take a shortcut and betray his own principles. Can you blame him? He defends with such vehemence his ideas established by the current environment, but he only follows the prevailing concepts in the social environment, he is just an image that does what others tell him to do, whether it is a face for Balenciaga or a smile for H & M.
En trabajos anteriores, el cineasta ya nos ha ofrecido historias que salpican muchos aspectos sociales, prejuicios, racismo, crisis matrimoniales, frivolidad y poder. Una de mis películas favoritas del director es Play, fue una película muy cruda que carecía del humor palpable en sus producciones más recientes.
Triangle of Sadness es una obra dividida en tres actos. Como la forma de un triángulo, el primer acto sería la base para conocer a dos de los personajes principales de la historia, aunque en los siguientes la narración se vuelve más coral, ambos personajes estarán presentes durante todo el metraje.
Se trata de Yaya y Carl, ambos modelos que ahora viven de ser influencers, aparentemente ella gana más dinero, ellos pueden permitirse algunos lujos, pero no son realmente ricos, muchas de las marcas con las que hacen negocios es por intercambio comerciales, regalos, etc. Son los nuevos famosos que predominan en esta época, donde la mentira y las apariencias son las formas en que el mundo se entretiene a través de sus dispositivos móviles.
La mentira y la hipocresía serán decisivas para la supervivencia en el tercer acto, por lo que es importante prestar atención a la discusión con la que se nos presentan a los dos personajes, haciendo hincapié en lo que plantea Carl, cuyos pensamientos son una total falacia. Cuando el destino le ponga a prueba, será el primero en tomar un atajo y traicionar sus propios principios. ¿Se le puede culpar? Defiende con tal vehemencia sus ideas instauradas pro el entorno actual, pero solo sigue conceptos predominantes en el entorno social, solo es una imagen que hace los que otros le dicen que debe hacer, ya sea una cara para Balenciaga o una sonrisa para H & M.
The second act is the ascending triangle line. It is the most insane, funny and disgustingly beautiful part of the film. It is where the story becomes more choral, with the presentation of the whole microcosm of that luxury cruise ship, where really rich people are having a vacation, enjoying a life that the common citizen can only dream of.
Carl and Yaya will be on the cruise, they have been given tickets in exchange for publicity on social networks. In a way they are intruders, do not be fooled by the appearance, they do not belong to the highest social class. The other passengers are people who represent the privileged class that holds the real economic and political power.
An elderly couple, who seem harmless beings, but who have made their fortune as dogs of war. That is the appearance of the devil, innocent and fragile. Also enjoying a few days of vacation is Dimitry, a Russian merchant who prides himself on being the king of shit, because he has amassed a fortune selling fertilizers. Another passenger is Jorma, a rich man because of his work in the technology sector, but the woman who should keep him company did not come on board and he feels a bit lonely. These are the characters representing the ruling social class, whose wishes and requests must be granted by the crew, they are the kings.
On the other side are the workers, the crew, those who cater to the every whim of the rich passengers, those who control the engines, the cooks, the cleaning staff composed mostly of immigrants. Paula is the boss of the crew and is attentive to every request, accommodating everything, even if the passenger makes a mistake, she plays along, the important thing is to keep them happy and that they receive a tip. It all comes down to money and what we are able to put up with in exchange for it. On that side is also the captain, who is fed up with his job and prefers to stay waxed and drunk in his cabin.
El segundo acto es la línea del triángulo ascendente. Es la parte más demencial, divertida y asquerosamente bella de la película. Es donde la historia se vuelve más coral, con la presentación de todo el microcosmos de ese crucero de lujo, donde gente realmente rica está pasando unas vacaciones, disfrutando de una vida que el ciudadano comun solo puede soñar.
Carl y Yaya estarán en el crucero, les han dado billetes a cambio de publicidad en las redes sociales. En cierta forma son intrusos, no te dejes engañar por la apariencia, ellos no pertenecen a la clase social más alta. Los demás pasajeros son personas que representan a la clase privilegiada que ostenta el verdadero poder económico y político.
Una pareja de ancianos, que parecen seres inofensivos, pero que han hecho fortuna como perros de la guerra. Esa es la apariencia del diablo, inocente y frágil. También disfruta de unos días de vacaciones Dimitry, un comerciante ruso que se enorgullece de ser el rey de la mierda, porque ha amasado una fortuna vendiendo fertilizantes. Otro pasajero es Jorma, un hombre rico por su trabajo en sector tecnológico, pero la mujer que debería hacerle compañía no subió a bordo y se siente un poco solo. Son los personajes que representan a la clase social dominante, cuyos deseos y peticiones deben ser concedidos por la tripulación, son los reyes.
En el otro lado están los trabajadores, la tripulación, los que atienden todos los caprichos de los pasajeros ricos, los que controlan los motores, los cocineros, el personal de limpieza compuesto en su mayoría por inmigrantes. Paula es la jefa de la tripulación y está atenta a cada petición, complaciendo todo, incluso si el pasajero se equivoca, ella le sigue la corriente, lo importante es tenerlos contentos y que reciban una propina. Todo se reduce al dinero y a lo que somos capaces de aguantar a cambio de él. Por ese lado también está el capitán, que está harto de su trabajo y prefiere quedarse encerado y borracho en su camarote.
What happens when you put a capitalist Russian and a communist American together - absolute chaos! Already that meeting is total madness that made me laugh too much. Actors Zlatko Burić and Woody Harrelson, who play the Russian and the captain, are the ones who steal the show when we climb to the top of the triangle, with a grotesquely funny, scatological but enjoyable sequence, where despair, madness, chaos and tragedy converge.
The last act is the third side of the triangle, a descent into hell for many of the characters, but for others it will be the opportunity to savor the privileges of power. Abigail, is the character that takes relevance, with an excellent interpretation of the actress Dolly De Leon, the roles are reversed, but what seems a victory of the working class, in reality it is not, it all comes down to the same motive exposed above, the possession of goods and power.
As I expressed in Tár's review, power shows us how we really are. Power also varies according to circumstances. When we are isolated in a primitive environment, power is no longer based on money, but on basic needs. For example, food and getting food can be used to make profit, to get support, especially for someone who has never had anything, it is a very important element.
Today we can have all the comforts and a comfortable life, but everything can change by an accident of fate. Politically it is the demonstration of the failure of any trend, no matter how good intentions you have, it will end up corrupted by the whims of human beings, giving way to a dictatorship. After a little taste of power, it causes addiction and it is very difficult to let go.
The third act feels a bit long, plus a change of pace after the final climax of the second act. Halfway through the movie is where I laughed out loud and that feels like a downer, the triangle line coming back to base along with Carl and Yaya where the masks of social hypocrisy have been removed, magnificently closing the story with the innate selfishness in us, the need to maintain power and all that brings out the dark side of people.

Abigail, es el personaje que toma relevancia, con una excelente interpretación de la actriz Dolly De Leon, los papeles se invierten, pero lo que parece una victoria de la clase obrera, en realidad no lo es, todo se reduce al mismo motivo expuesto anteriormente, la posesión de bienes y poder.
Tal como exprese en la reseña de Tár, el poder nos muestra como somos en realidad. El poder también varía según las circunstancias. Cuando estamos aislados en un entorno primitivo, el poder ya no se basa en el dinero, sino en las necesidades básicas. Por ejemplo, la comida y la obtención de alimentos pueden servir para obtener beneficios, para conseguir apoyo, especialmente para alguien que nunca ha tenido nada, es un elemento muy importante.
Hoy podemos tener todas las comodidades y una vida cómoda, pero todo puede cambiar por un accidente del destino. políticamente es la demostración del fracaso de cualquier tendencia, por muy buenas intenciones que se tenga, terminara corrompiéndose por los caprichos del ser humano, dando paso a la una dictadura. Después que se prueba un poco de poder, causa adicción y es muy difícil soltarlo.
El tercer acto se siente un poco largo, además de un cambio de ritmo después del clímax final del segundo acto. A mitad de la película es donde me reí a carcajadas y eso se siente como un bajón, la línea del triángulo volviendo a la base junto a Carl y Yaya donde se han quitado las máscaras de la hipocresía social, cerrando magníficamente la historia con el egoísmo innato en nosotros, la necesidad de mantener el poder y sacando a relucir el lado oscuro de las personas.

Triangle of Sadness is a journey on a luxury yacht valued at 250 million dollars where our society is dissected with scalpels that make cuts in all directions. We can't change our nature, we are what we are in borderline situations and the film can be uncomfortable, because sometimes it's hard to see our worst instincts portrayed.

El trabajo de todo el reparto es excelente, pero hay una nota triste, a mediados del año pasado, meses después de que la película ganara la Palma de Oro en el Festival de Cannes, la actriz Charlbi Dean, que interpretaba a la bella Yaya, falleció repentinamente. Una triste noticia, sólo tenía 32 años y seguramente el éxito de la película le abriría las puertas a otros buenos proyectos. La pérdida de un talento prometedor es lamentable. En internet hay mucha información sobre las causas de su muerte, puedes hacer una búsqueda por su nombre si quieres enterarte.
La película ha sido nominada al Oscar en tres categorías, película, guión y dirección. No creo que la academia le de uno de los premios, el director ya estuvo nominado con su anterior producción, en la categoría de película de habla no inglesa. La academia es muy conservadora y clásica a la hora de dar premios, no se arriesgan con películas como esta.
Triangle of Sadness es un viaje en un yate de lujo valorado en 250 millones de dólares donde se disecciona nuestra sociedad con bisturís que hacen cortes en todas direcciones. No podemos cambiar nuestra naturaleza, somos lo que somos en situaciones límite y la película puede resultar incómoda, porque a veces es difícil ver cómo se retratan nuestros peores instintos.
