A modest production that without too much paraphernalia manages to absorb the viewer in a situation where power imposes its authority. A claustrophobic hell inside cold offices, where the slightest mistake can truncate the dreams and plans of many people.

In just one hour and fifteen minutes, we will suffer just like the protagonists of the film. You will feel overwhelmed, nervous, desperate, impotent before what you are about to see. That is the merit of Alejandro Rojas and Juan Sebastián Vásquez, in charge of directing and writing the script together. Without great resources, few locations and few actors, they have made one of the best Spanish films released this year.

Both filmmakers are of Venezuelan origin. Vasquez has worked in Spain as director of photography on several films, including El Practicante with Mario Casas, and has also directed short films, but this is his first feature film, as is Rojas. They are off to a good start and I'm sure we will see them working together again in the near future.

I repeat again what I said in my post about the American film Reality. Sometimes less is more and also, on many occasions, that helps to give credibility to a story. You have to use what you have, be creative when telling stories and most importantly, the script has to tell a good story and you have to have a group of actors capable of conveying emotions.

Modesta producción que sin demasiada parafernalia consigue absorber al espectador en una situación donde el poder impone su autoridad. Un infierno claustrofóbico dentro de fríos despachos, donde el más mínimo error puede truncar los sueños y planes de muchas personas.

En apenas una hora y quince minutos, sufriremos igual que los protagonistas de la película. Te sentirás abrumado, nervioso, desesperado, impotente ante lo que vas a ver. Ese es el mérito de Alejandro Rojas y Juan Sebastián Vásquez, encargados de dirigir y escribir juntos el guión. Sin grandes recursos, pocas localizaciones y pocos actores, han hecho una de las mejores películas españolas estrenadas este año.

Ambos cineastas son de origen venezolano. Vásquez ha trabajado en España como director de fotografía de varias películas, entre ellas El Practicante con Mario Casas, y también ha dirigido cortometrajes, pero éste es su primer largometraje, al igual que Rojas. Han empezado con buen pie y seguro que les volveremos a ver trabajando juntos en un futuro próximo.

Repito lo que dije en mi post sobre la película americana Reality. A veces menos es más y además, en muchas ocasiones, eso ayuda a dar credibilidad a una historia. Hay que utilizar lo que se tiene, ser creativo a la hora de contar historias y lo más importante, el guión tiene que contar una buena historia y hay que contar con un grupo de actores capaces de transmitir emociones.

The plot is simple. Diego and Elena are a couple. They are happy because they have decided to leave Spain for the United States. They have all the documentation and the visa. She is Spanish, specifically from Barcelona and he is a Venezuelan who emigrated to Spain. They hope to start a new life, the American dream. But not everything is rosy in the land of Uncle Sam. Having a visa and everything in order does not guarantee them entry. They will have to go through the unpleasant experience of a more exhaustive security inspection and the dreaded interrogation room, where secrets will come to light. Is everything in order or is one of them hiding something? Will they manage to enter the United States?

A room. Grim-faced security agents. Unanswered questions. Orders. No cell phones. No food or water. Being treated like a criminal. Hostile interrogations. Uncomfortable questions. Sweating. Nerves. A situation in which resistance is pushed to the limit and whose goal is to break you so as not to let you in.

La trama es sencilla. Diego y Elena son pareja. Están felices porque han decidido marcharse de España a Estados Unidos. Tienen toda la documentación y el visado. Ella es española, concretamente de Barcelona y él es venezolano que emigró a España. Esperan empezar una nueva vida, el sueño americano. Pero no todo es de color de rosa en la tierra del Tío Sam. Tener el visado y todo en regla no les garantiza la entrada. Tendrán que pasar por la desagradable experiencia de una inspección de seguridad más exhaustiva y por la temida sala de interrogatorios, donde los secretos saldrán a la luz. ¿Está todo en orden o alguno de ellos oculta algo? ¿Conseguirán entrar en Estados Unidos?

Una habitación. Agentes de seguridad con mala cara. Preguntas sin respuesta. Órdenes. Sin móviles. Sin comida ni agua. Ser tratado como un criminal. Interrogatorios hostiles. Preguntas incómodas. Sudores. Nervios. Una situación en la que la resistencia se lleva al límite y cuyo objetivo es doblegarte para no dejarte entrar.

Those who have conventionally emigrated to the United States and have had to go through the interrogation room will identify, and the film will bring back those bitter memories. It doesn't matter if their case was quick or dragged out too long. In the end, everyone agrees that it is a very uncomfortable moment in which nerves can take over the person, making them make mistakes, talk too much, say something they shouldn't, although this is not bad, but every word and the way they say it is important in this type of case. Perhaps the filmmakers Vasquez and Rojas captured something from their own experience, being immigrants themselves, or they took things from the experiences of family or friends.

What is shown in the film may also be useful for those who plan to travel to that country and know what not to do in case they have to go through that additional security check, which many times is done randomly, or if you are from a Latin American country, it is very likely that they will apply the check at random. Remember that those officials enjoy doing their job, it is for doing it in that place, that they are given the power to decide the destiny of other people's lives, they are the ones who have in their hands the future of others. Power intoxicates and corrupts.

Goya winners Alberto Ammann and Bruna Cusi play the protagonist couple, Diego and Elena. Both are great in their work, especially Alberto, who with his in-terpretation, manages to sow many doubts about the character. Gestures, looks, body movement, makes us think that this man is hiding something, we even get to take the side of the interrogators.

On the side of the authority, the actress Laura Gomez playing the agent Vasquez stands out, with her implacable look and her constant questions, she tries to make the couple fall apart and even end up declaring something that cannot be true. She is the wall they must pass to live on American soil. Some will remember the actress from the series Orange is The New Black, where she played the zany Blanca.

Unpon Entry raises the tension of its story progressively, until we arrive exhausted at its surprising ending. An energetic film with solid performances.

Quienes hayan emigrado de forma convencional a Estados Unidos y hayan tenido que pasar por la sala de interrogatorios se sentirán identificados, y la película les traerá esos amargos recuerdos. No importa si su caso fue rápido o se alargó demasiado. Al final, todos coinciden en que es un momento muy incómodo en el que los nervios pueden apoderarse de la persona, haciéndole cometer errores, hablar de más, decir algo que no debe, aunque esto no es malo, pero cada palabra y la forma de decirla es importante en este tipo de casos. Quizás los cineastas Vásquez y Rojas plasmaron algo de su propia experiencia, siendo ellos mismos inmigrantes, o tomaron cosas de las experiencias de familiares o amigos.

Lo que se muestra en la película también puede ser útil para quienes planean viajar a ese país y saber qué no hacer en caso de tener que pasar por ese control de seguridad adicional, que muchas veces se hace al azar, o si eres de un país latinoamericano, es muy probable que te apliquen el control al azar. Recuerda que esos funcionarios disfrutan haciendo su trabajo, es por hacerlo en ese lugar, que se les da el poder de decidir el destino de la vida de otras personas, son ellos los que tienen en sus manos el futuro de los demás. El poder intoxica y corrompe.

Los ganadores del Goya Alberto Ammann y Bruna Cusi interpretan a la pareja protagonista, Diego y Elena. Ambos están geniales en su trabajo, sobre todo Alberto, que con su in-terpretación, consigue sembrar muchas dudas sobre el personaje. Gestos, miradas, movimiento corporal, nos hace pensar que este hombre oculta algo, incluso llegamos a ponernos de parte de los interrogadores.

En el lado de la autoridad, destaca la actriz Laura Gómez interpretando a la agente Vasquez, con su mirada implacable y sus constantes preguntas, intenta que la pareja se desmorone e incluso acaben declarando algo que no puede ser cierto. Ella es el muro que deben pasar para vivir en tierras americanas. Algunos recordarán a la actriz por la serie Orange is The New Black, donde interpretaba a la alocada Blanca.

Unpon Entry eleva la tensión de su historia progresivamente, hasta que llegamos exhaustos a su sorprendente final. Una película enérgica con sólidas interpretaciones.
