Over the weekend I watched both seasons of a series that I had written off a long time ago. This time I enjoyed watching it and understand why it has been a ratings success.

Last year I tried to watch Yellowjackets and abandoned it halfway through the first episode. My mood has a big influence on my enjoyment of a movie or TV series. At the time I couldn't connect with the characters in that half hour I watched and for that reason I completely dismissed watching it.
During all this time I came across reviews and opinions recommending the series, always being careful with spoilers. In addition, the series and one of the main actresses were again nominated for Emmy awards, which motivated me to seek it out. Fortunately I watched the entire pilot episode and this time I couldn't stop.
There are series that, without being perfect, provoke a peculiar addiction. I can't say that Yellowjackets is amazing, because it's really not. The creators have taken references from many works and applying the basic rules have built a universe of their own, at the same time attractive, applying formulas that have proven to be successful in the past.
A mysterious place (forest and mountains), strange symbols, fantasy and horror elements, witchcraft, crashing planes, bright yellow jackets, two timelines in the narrative, flashback, survival, deaths, cliffanger. It's hard to categorize this series, because it goes from drama, to classic coming to age amidst the chaos of survival, with touches of eco horror to even comedy situations. All this mix is risky and I think it all could have been a disaster, but there is something that they got right and that is one of the reasons for its success: the characters and the cast that plays them.
El año pasado intenté ver Yellowjackets y la abandoné a mitad del primer episodio. Mi estado de ánimo influye mucho a la hora de disfrutar de una película o una serie de televisión. En ese momento no pude conectar con los personajes en esa media hora que vi y por esa razón descarté completamente verla.
Durante todo este tiempo me encontré con reseñas y opiniones que recomendaban la serie, siempre teniendo cuidado con los spoilers. Además, la serie y una de las actrices principales volvían a estar nominadas a los premios Emmy, lo que me motivó a buscarla. Afortunadamente vi todo el episodio piloto y esta vez no pude parar.
Hay series que, sin ser perfectas, provocan una peculiar adicción. No puedo decir que Yellowjackets sea increíble, porque realmente no lo es. Los creadores han tomado referencias de muchas obras y aplicando las reglas básicas han construido un universo propio, a la vez que atractivo, aplicando fórmulas que han demostrado tener éxito en el pasado.
Un lugar misterioso (bosque y montañas), símbolos extraños, elementos de fantasía y terror, brujería, aviones que se estrellan, chaquetas de llamativo color amarillo, dos líneas temporales en la narración, flashback, supervivencia, muertes, cliffanger. Es difícil categorizar esta serie, porque va desde el drama, pasando por el clásico coming to age en medio del caos de la supervivencia, con toques de eco horror hasta incluso situaciones de comedia. Toda esta mezcla es arriesgada y creo que todo podría haber sido un desastre, pero hay algo en lo que han acertado de pleno y que es una de las razones de su éxito: los personajes y el elenco que los interpreta.

The story and the character are two important pillars for me in any production, it is what I pay more attention to. The series can be reproached for not being very innovative in terms of direction, in that aspect they don't dare to experiment, but at the same time they have found a way to give the whole series its own personality.
The story is told in two timelines, one in the present, with the adult protagonists, most of them in their forties, and another in the past, when they were just teenagers, members of the girls' soccer team of their school, in the year and a half that would completely change their lives with a huge tragedy.
The casting people who selected the main characters did an excellent job. It is difficult to determine which versions of the characters are the best, because each of the actresses, both young and old, do a delightful acting job. Even when their actions are disturbing. Forget about good guys or bad guys, here all the main characters are motherfuckers. They lost their innocence a long time ago, the evil presence in the forest stayed inside them, they did too horrible things, they crossed the limits of what is allowed and they won't be able to get out of it easily.
Although each episode keeps in balance the amount of time dedicated to the present and the past of the plot, each viewer may feel more attracted to one of them. In my case, I like more to see the past, when they were teenagers and discover everything they lived through in that forest, who survived, the struggle for leadership in a world where they had to establish their own laws.
The parts set in the present, although entertaining, I feel that I got a little tired of the cult in the second season. Something I also felt in the first season with Shauna's love relationship, which is important for the development of that plot, but many scenes in the adult stage of the protagonists, wanders on the edge of comedy. At times they seem like a screwball club in a sitcom. It totally contrasts with the tension and disturbing situations of the past. That's why it's a bit of a crazy and addictive series, with this peculiar mix.
La historia y el personaje son dos pilares importantes para mí en cualquier producción, es a lo que presto más atención. A la serie se le puede reprochar que no es muy innovadora en cuanto a la dirección, en ese aspecto no se atreven a experimentar, pero al mismo tiempo han encontrado la manera de dotar de personalidad propia a toda la serie.
La historia está contada en dos líneas temporales, una en el presente, con las protagonistas adultas, la mayoría de ellas con cuarenta años de edad , y otra en el pasado, cuando eran apenas unas adolescentes, integrantes del equipo de fútbol femenino de su colegio, en el año y medio que cambiaría por completo sus vidas con una enorme tragedia.
Los responsables del casting que seleccionaron a los protagonistas hicieron un trabajo excelente. Es difícil determinar qué versiones de los personajes son las mejores, porque cada una de las actrices, tanto jóvenes como mayores, hacen un trabajo interpretativo delicioso. Incluso cuando sus acciones son perturbadoras. Olvídate de buenos o malos, aquí todos los protagonistas son unas hijas de puta. Perdieron la inocencia hace mucho tiempo, la presencia maligna en el bosque se quedó dentro de ellas, hicieron cosas demasiado horribles, traspasaron los límites de lo permitido y no podrán salir de ello fácilmente.
Aunque cada episodio mantiene en equilibrio la cantidad de tiempo dedicado al presente y al pasado de la trama, cada espectador puede sentirse más atraído por uno de ellos. En mi caso, me gusta más ver el pasado, cuando eran adolescentes y descubrir todo lo que vivieron en aquel bosque, quiénes sobrevivieron, la lucha por el liderazgo en un mundo en el que tuvieron que establecer sus propias leyes.
Las partes ambientadas en el presente, aunque es entretenido, siento que me cansó un poco lo de la secta en la segunda temporada. Algo que también sentí en la primera temporada con la relación amorosa de Shauna, que es importante para el desarrollo de esa trama, pero muchas escenas en la etapa adulta de los protagonistas, deambula al borde de la comedia. Por momentos parecen un club de chifaldos en una comedia. Contrasta totalmente con la tensión y las situaciones inquietantes del pasado. Por eso es una serie un poco loca y adictiva, con esta mezcla tan peculiar.
Malanie Lynskey plays the adult Shauna, the absolute anti-heroine of the series, she brings candor and darkness to a character we will love, without forgetting all the horrible things she did in the past. Her younger version is no slouch either, played by Sophie Nélisse, an actress many will remember from the movie The Book Thief. Both look great, they fit perfectly.
Christina Ricci and Sammi Hanratty play Misty. The woman who has always been seen as a freak, who almost no one takes seriously, is a character with many emotional problems, she needs to feel loved, that's why she does what she does in the forest, because it is in that hostile environment, where her knowledge gives her some value in front of others. With this character is more evident that change of tone in the series. The adult Misty is more comic, while the young Misty is darker.
Taissa's character is played by actresses Tawny Cypress and Jasmin Savoy Brown, with the latter being the one I perceive to play a better role. It's also because I find the younger Taissa more interesting, because I feel her stronger and more confident. Even though as an adult she is a candidate for senator, her whole family history bothered me and not to mention how it plays out in the second season.
Natalie, the rebel whose life has been full of suffering, is intercepted on the young stage by Sophie Thatcher. Like the actresses who play Shauna, they manage to compete and, although the physical resemblance is not much, they give her credibility. The adult Natalie is played by bad girl Juliette Lewis, an actress I loved when I saw her so long ago in Natural Born Killers and who made several films that had her on her way to Olympus, but bad choices, drugs and trouble took their toll on her career. It was nice to see her in a character that fits her like a glove.
It's a series of many characters, I can't overlook Jackie, played by Ella Purnell, a character of vital importance to the events of the past. It is a series with a strong female presence, but there are also important male characters, for example, Coach Ben and young Travis. The second season expands the cast, including actor Elijah Wood, the eternal Frodo, with a character that once again reaffirms the tone of comedy, paired with Chritina Ricci. It is in the second season that we will also see the adult versions of Lotti and Vanessa, the latter played in this version by Lauren Ambrose, another actress I was looking forward to seeing again in a good production and whom I will always remember as Claire in HBO's masterpiece Six Feet Under.

La mujer que siempre ha sido vista como un bicho raro, a la que casi nadie toma en serio, es un personaje con muchos problemas afectivos, necesita sentirse querida, por eso hace lo que hace en el bosque, porque es en ese ambiente hostil, donde sus conocimientos le dan cierto valor frente a los demás. Con este peronaje es más evidente ese cambio de tono en la serie. La Misty adulta es más cómica, mientras que la Misty joven es más oscura.
El personaje de Taissa está interpretado por las actrices Tawny Cypress y Jasmin Savoy Brown, siendo esta última la que percibo que hace un mejor papel. También es porque la Taissa joven me resulta más interesante, porque la siento más fuerte y segura de sí misma. Aunque de adulta sea candidata a senadora, toda su historia familiar me molestó y ni hablar de cómo se desarrolla en la segunda temporada.
Natalie, la rebelde cuya vida ha estado llena de sufrimiento, es interceptada en la joven etapa por Sophie Thatcher. Al igual que las actrices que interpretan a Shauna, consiguen competir y, aunque el parecido físico no es mucho, le dan credibilidad. La Natalie adulta está interpretada por la chica mala Juliette Lewis, una actriz que me encantó cuando la vi hace tanto tiempo en Asesinos por naturaleza y que hizo varias películas que la tenían camino del Olimpo, pero las malas decisiones, las drogas y los problemas hicieron mella en su carrera. After finishing the second season, I can say that in general I liked it, but I am concerned that the creators have stated that their plan is to make five seasons, which seems excessive to me. I'd rather they give it closure in the third season, but in case they lengthen it, I think it's going to play against it, especially with the plot set in the present. The past is nineteen months and by the end of the second season nine months have already passed. It will be unfortunate if it happens as with other Showtime series, which end up being a parody of themselves.
Yellowjackets is an entertaining, crazy and addictive series, as if it were one of those sugary drinks that are hard to stop savoring. Look for it on streaming services and leave me your opinion in the comments.
Tras terminar la segunda temporada, puedo decir que en general me ha gustado, pero me preocupa que los creadores hayan declarado que su plan es hacer cinco temporadas, lo cual me parece excesivo. Prefiero que le den un cierre en la tercera temporada, pero en caso de que la alarguen, creo que va a jugar en contra, sobre todo con la trama ambientada en el presente. El pasado son diecinueve meses y al final de la segunda temporada ya han pasado nueve. Será lamentable que ocurra como con otras series de Showtime, que acaban siendo una parodia de sí mismas.
