Welcome dear internet travelers lovers of post-apocalyptic scenarios and thank you very much for making a temporary stop in my post, there are films that are considered iconic within a genre and that are a mandatory appointment for lovers of it, the film that I review today is precisely that and I am talking of course about "I am Leyend" an unmissable appointment for all those who are lovers of zombies and societies in ruins because of a virus. Without further ado, be prepared to look for provisions before it gets dark since we are about to start.
Bienvenidos queridos viajeros del internet amantes de los escenarios post apocalípticos y muchas gracias por hacer una parada temporal en mi post, existen películas que se consideran icónicas dentro de un género y que son una cita obligatoria para los amantes de la misma, la cinta que reseñare hoy es precisamente eso y estoy hablando por supuesto de “I am Leyend” una cita imperdible para todos aquellos que son amantes de los zombies y sociedades en ruinas a causa de un virus. Sin más que agregar prepárense para buscar provisiones antes de que se haga de noche puesto que estamos por comenzar.
I am Leyend was released in 2007, based on the novel of the same name written by Richard Matheson, directed by Francis Lawrence and produced by Warner Bros. It is an action and suspense film, it focuses on Robert Neville a lieutenant colonel and virologist who finds himself alone with his dog in a post-apocalyptic society, all product of a man-made virus to which he is immune, the virus was initially thought to cure cancer but unfortunately turned its hosts into mutants susceptible to the sun's rays and extremely aggressive; Robert's goal is to try to obtain a cure in order to avoid the extinction of his species although loneliness and his delicate mental state made it difficult for him to do so.
I am Leyend fue estrenada en 2007, basada en la novela del mismo nombre escrita por Richard Matheson, dirigida por Francis Lawrence y producida por Warner Bros, posee una duración de 1 hora y 41 minutos. Es una cinta de acción y suspenso, se enfoca en Robert Neville un teniente coronel y virólogo que se encuentra solo con su perro en una sociedad post apocalíptica, todo producto de un virus hecho por el hombre al cual es inmune, el virus fue pensado inicialmente para curar el cáncer pero desgraciadamente convirtió a sus huéspedes en mutantes susceptibles a los rayos solares y sumamente agresivos; el objetivo de Robert es tratar de obtener una cura para poder evitar la extinción de su especie aunque la soledad y su delicado estado mental le dificultaran dicha tarea.

The soundtrack is a cornerstone in this film because it presents at different times situations of tension and suspense that are considerably supported by the music since it is a fundamental element to make these situations plausible.
La banda sonora es una piedra angular en este filme debido a que presenta en diferentes momentos situaciones de tensión y suspenso que se apoyan de forma considerable en la música puesto que es un elemento fundamental para lograr hacer plausible dichas situaciones.
The construction of the world is something peculiar for the genre, it focuses mainly on posing a discouraging context through a city in ruins, seeking to present a world that has already been devastated by the virus, where the only apparent survivor is the protagonist who little by little is exploring that civilization stripped almost entirely of human activity. All this results in a scenario that looks abandoned and that makes totally clear the idea that everything takes place in a totally destroyed society that is only the shadow of what it once was.
La construcción de mundo es algo peculiar para el género, se centra principalmente en plantear un contexto desalentador mediante una ciudad en ruinas, buscando presentar un mundo que ya ha sido arrasado por el virus, en donde el único aparente superviviente es el protagonista que poco a poco va explorando aquella civilización despojada casi en su totalidad de actividad humana. Todo esto da como resultado un escenario que luce abandonado y que deja totalmente clara la idea de que todo se desarrolla en una sociedad totalmente destruida que solo es la sombra de lo que una vez fue.
The plot is particular for the fact that it is not the typical story of the genre that shows exaggerated amounts of zombies, in fact these are not the central focus of the film; much greater importance is given to the disaster that these left in society and the fact of showing the psychological pressure that this situation can exert on the protagonist. The above mentioned causes the narrative to be less agitated than they usually are in this genre, however this is not harmful at all, in fact quite the opposite since the fact that it aimed to raise some suspense and psychological pressure makes it much more interesting. I must add that the fact that it states that the infected can only go out at night gives it a certain particular characteristic that gives a lot of play and that enriches the narrative by enabling different scenarios due to this particularity.
La trama es particular por el hecho de que no es la típica historia del género que muestra cantidades exageradas de zombies, de hecho estos no son el foco central de la cinta; se le da mucha mayor importancia al desastre que dejaron estos en la sociedad y el hecho de mostrar la presión psicológica que esta situación puede ejercer sobre el protagonista. Lo anterior mencionado provoca que la narrativa sea menos agitada de lo que suelen ser en este género, sin embargo esto no es perjudicial en lo absoluto, de hecho todo lo contrario puesto que el hecho de que apuntó a plantear algo de suspenso y presión psicológica la hace mucho más interesante. He de añadir que el hecho de que plante que los infectados solo pueden salir de noche le da cierta característica particular que da mucho juego y que enriquece a la narrativa al posibilitar distintos escenarios debido a esta particularidad.
There is only one character that is relevant and which has to carry the weight of directing the plot since the rest are added late and are not really remarkable, so it is the protagonist who has to carry out the film and it is a work that he does excellently. First of all we must mention the fact that Robert is an extremely complete character, he demonstrates a very well achieved mental state because he is built with deep depression, melancholy and even some dementia; all this is completely accurate, since we are talking about an individual who saw the death of loved ones, survivor of a disaster, the frustration of not being able to find a cure and total loneliness, all this leaves a character with a psychological decline that feels very plausible. The protagonist finds a spectacular characterization which makes it extremely easy to be able to grow fond of him and feel empathy for the desperate situation he suffers, which is making a dent in his mind, being that even this unsustainable circumstance makes it so that at some point he considers even ending his existence thus demonstrating the emotional decline he is going through.
Existe un único personaje que es relevante y el cual tiene que cargar con el peso de encaminar la trama puesto que el resto son agregados tarde y no son realmente destacables, por lo que es el protagonista aquel que tiene que sacar adelante la cinta y es una labor que realiza de forma excelente. Primeramente hay que mencionar el hecho de que Robert es un personaje sumamente completo, demuestra un estado mental muy bien logrado debido a que se lo construye con una profunda depresión, melancolía e incluso algo de demencia; todo esto es completamente acertado, ya que estamos hablando de un individuo que vio la muerte de seres queridos, sobreviviente de un desastre, la frustración de no poder dar con una cura y una soledad total, todo esto deja un personaje con un declive psicológico que se siente muy plausible. El protagonista se encuentra con una caracterización espectacular lo que hace sumamente fácil el poder encariñarse con él y sentir empatía por la situación tan desesperante que padece, la cuál se encuentra haciendo mella a su mente, siendo que incluso dicha circunstancia tan insostenible hace que llegado un punto considere incluso acabar con su existencia demostrando así el declive emocional que atraviesa.
I am Leyend makes the excellent decision to focus on the psychological consequences that a human being can experience when he finds himself alone in a post-apocalyptic world having to face all the adversities that this presents being completely alone, all this without detracting from the relevance of the zombies. That is why it deserves a rating of 4.5 stars out of 7, a film that did some different things for the genre and that is why it is so attractive from beginning to end, let's hope that its sequel keeps the bar equal or higher.
I am Leyend toma la excelente decisión de enfocar las consecuencias psicológicas que puede experimentar un ser humano al encontrarse solo en un mundo post apocalíptico debiendo enfrentarse a todas las adversidades que este presenta estando completamente solo, todo esto sin quitarle relevancia a los zombies. Es por ello que merece una calificación de 4.5 estrellas de 7, una cinta que hizo algunas cosas diferentes para el género y es por ello que es tan atrayente de principio a fin, esperemos que su secuela mantenga el listón igual o más alto.
