The 1987 doc Hellraiser is the work of Clive Barker, who balances well-executed horror and 1980s kitsch in his film debut.
Clive is a well-known writer who has published a number of different novels including the famous short story Hellraiser, when he was offered a screen adaptation, he agreed, but decided to shoot it himself thanks to this we have a vision closest to what the author wanted to tell us in his story.
The film begins darkly.
A man somewhere in the Middle East buys a mysterious cube, this cube allows you to experience certain delights after arranging it.
Frank without thinking much arranges the cube and Cenobites appear, who are tasked with inflicting unimaginable pain.
Frank, suspended between life and death, waits at home for someone to release him from this agony.
After some time his brother and his wife move into the house.
They don't yet know that their new home hides a macabre secret.
When the wife discovers that Frank, her former lover, is alive she wants to save him even at the expense of others.
The film was very controversial in the 80's because of the free depiction of the wife's betrayal and her involvement.
The film slowly builds tension, even gives the viewer piece by piece information about what is happening and what will come of it all.
Hellraiser can be compared to the Frankeinstein films.
Both films are characterized by madness and an attempt to create man anew.
Clive Barker tries to show in a rather macabre way what love for another person leads to, and to rearrange the iconic representatives of the Cenobites
The Cenobites themselves look great you can see a strong touching and even cause disgust, but at the same time fascination.
Despite the small budget, each of the costumes looks insane. The monsters are brilliantly characterized, you can see the work on each Cenobite including the iconic Pinhead.
The 1st part surprises because the Cenobites play a neutral role more than as typical creatures from hell.
Here they only aim to bring Frank back to them although they also try to bring the main character back in some way.
The whole thing is quite good to watch, although there are moments of kitsch, but the atmosphere in the film is powerful, and the characters expressive enough that we wait with bated breath what will happen next and who will survive this macabre fun.

Clive to znany pisarz który wydał wiele różnych powieści w tym słynne opowiadanie Hellraiser, kiedy dostał propozycje ekranizacje, zgodził się, ale postanowił sam nakręcić dzięki temu mamy wizje najbardziej zbliżona do tego co autor chciał nam przekazać w swoim opowiadaniu.
Film zaczyna się mrocznie.
Pewien mężczyzna gdzieś na bliskim wschodzie kupuje tajemnicza kostkę, kostka ta pozwala po ułożeniu doznać pewnych rozkoszy.
Frank nie myśląc wiele układa kostkę i pojawiają się Cenobici, którzy maja za zadanie zadać niewyobrażalny ból.
Frank zawieszony między życiem a śmiercią czeka w domu by ktoś go uwolnił z tej agonii.
Po pewnym czasie do domu wprowadza się jego brat wraz żona.
Jeszcze nie wiedza ze ich nowy dom skrywa makabryczna tajemnice.
Kiedy żona odkrywa, ze Frank jej dawny kochanek jest żywy chce go ratować nawet kosztem innych.
Film w latach 80 był mocno kontrowersyjny przez to ze swobodnie ukazano zdradę żony, oraz jej zaanagażowanie.
W film powoli buduje napięcie, wręcz daje widzowi po kawałku informacje co się dzieje i co z tego wszystkiego wyniknie.
Hellraiser można porównać do filmów o Frankeinsteinie.
Obydwa filmy cechuje szaleństwo i próbę stworzenia człowieka na nowo.
Clive Barker stara się w dość makabryczny sposób pokazać co prowadzi miłość do drugiej osoby oraz przestawić ikonicznych przedstawicieli Cenobitow
Sami Cenobici wyglądają świetnie widać mocne przyłożenie się i wręcz powoduja odrazę, ale jednoczenie fascynacje.
Pomimo małego budżetu każdy z kostiumów wyglada wręcz obłędnie. Potwory są świetnie ucharakteryzowani, widać prace nad każdym Cenobitem w tym ikonicznego Pinheada.
1 cześć zaskakuje gdyż Cenobici bardziej odgrywają role neutralna niż jako typowe stwory z piekieł.
Tutaj maja na celu tylko sprowadzić Franka z powrotem do nich choć starają się tez w jakiś sposób sprowadzić tez główna bohaterkę.
Całość ogląda się całkiem dobrze, choć bywają momenty mocno kiczowate to jednak klimat w filmie jest potężny, a postacie na tyle wyraziste, ze czekamy z zapartym tchem co wydarzy się dalej i kto przeżyje ta makabryczna zabawę.
