In general, I usually watch series or movies after the hype. I found out about this series a few months ago but was reluctant to give it a try for the wrong reasons. Don't get me wrong, I'm not an arrogant snob who doesn't like mainstream filmmaking at all, but I do consider that at the top there are many worn-out movies and franchises that kill me with boredom and others that I will never be able to recognize as high-quality production.
In this case, Queen's Gambit is a great exception. I came across a high-quality mini-series, with a fantastic script and a very motivating story.
En líneas generales suelo ver las series o películas después del hype. Supe de esta serie hace unos meses pero me resistí a darle una oportunidad por razones equivocadas. No me malinterpreten, no soy un arrogante esnobista que no le gusta nada del mainstream cinematográfico pero si considero que en el top hay muchas películas y franquicias desgastadas que me matan del aburrimiento y otras que nunca podre reconocer su valía como producción de alta calidad.
En este caso Gambito de Dama es una gran excepción. Me encontré con una mini serie de alta calidad, con un guion fantástico y una historia bastante motivadora.
For those who have not seen her yet, Queen's Gambit tells the story of a prodigy chess player who seeks to become the best in the world. The series begins by telling us the story of her childhood in an orphanage due to his mother's suicide. The traumas she inherited and her beginnings in chess with a janitor who lived there, a chess fan who little by little taught her everything he could.
From that moment Beth Harmon (the child prodigy) meddles in schools to defeat the best students. Chess becomes her obsession, playing in her mind without using a board, analyzing the games and putting more and more logic into them, but she also becomes addicted to the tranquilizers that were provided to her at the orphanage.
Para los que aún no la hayan visto, Gambito de dama nos cuenta la historia de una ajedrecista prodigio que busca hacerse como la mejor del mundo. La serie comienza relatando la historia de su niñez en un orfanato debido al suicidio de su madre. Los traumas que heredo y sus inicios en el ajedrez con un conserje que radicaba en ese lugar, un aficionado del ajedrez que poco a poco le fue enseñando todo lo que podía.
A partir de ese momento Beth Harmon (la niña prodigio) se inmiscuye en escuelas para derrotar a los mejores estudiantes. El ajedrez se vuelve en su obsesión, jugando en su mente sin necesidad de usar un tablero, analizando las partidas y poniendo cada vez más lógica en ellas, pero también se vuelve adicta a los tranquilizantes que le eran proporcionados en el orfanato.
Shortly after Harmon is adopted by a dysfunctional family, a woman who lost a child and a man who didn't love his wife, however, all this was much better for Beth than being in the orphanage. From that moment on she was much freer and could develop her skills as a chess player in a much faster way.
Her adoptive mother understood that Harmon could earn a lot of money playing chess so she decided to support her, on her travels and giving her all the company she needed, but at the same time she was an alcoholic who was destined to live the rest of her life submerged in a bottle.
Poco después Harmon es adoptada por una familia disfuncional, una mujer que perdió un hijo y un hombre que no amaba a su esposa, sin embargo todo esto era mucho mejor para Beth que estar en el orfanato. Desde ese momento era mucho más libre y podía desarrollar sus habilidades como ajedrecista de una manera mucho más rápida.
Su madre adoptiva entendió que Harmon podía ganar mucho dinero al jugar ajedrez así que decidió apoyarla, en sus viajes y dándole toda la compañía que necesitara, pero a la vez era una alcohólica que estaba destinada a vivir el resto su vida sumergida en una botella.
Beth knows love through different men, perhaps in a cold and rough way, since that was her personality, she wasn't an open or cheerful girl due to her traumas since childhood and perhaps that is why her interpersonal relationships were not at all satisfactory.
When what we like becomes an obsession we may become unstoppable people, perfectionists, and develop surprising skills but we can also become ruthless, cruel and arrogant person towards other people for not considering them important. In Hartmon's case, her life was chess, her passion was that 64-square board, something that, unlike life, she could control and predict.
Stephan Zweig's chess novel has many parallels with this story, especially the obsession that both characters achieve for the game. The need comparable to a drug addiction to play, to analyze and to overcome is prevalent before these characters who seek to be the best.
Beth conoce el amor a través de diferentes hombres, quizás de una manera fría y tosca, ya que esa era su personalidad, no era una chica abierta o alegre debido a sus traumas desde la infancia y quizás por ello sus relaciones interpersonales no eran del todo satisfactorias.
Cuando lo que nos gusta se vuelve en una obsesión podemos llegar a ser personas imparables, perfeccionistas y desarrollar habilidades sorprendentes pero también podemos llegar a ser personas despiadadas, crueles y arrogantes hacia las demás personas por no considerarlas importantes. En el caso de Hartmon su vida era el ajedrez, su pasión era ese tablero de 64 cuadros, algo que a diferencia de la vida ella podía controlar y predecir.
La novela de ajedrez de Stephan Zweig tiene muchos paralelismos con esta historia, sobre todo la obsesión que logran ambos personajes por dicho juego. La necesidad equiparable a una adicción a las drogas por jugar, por analizar y por vencer es imperante ante estos personajes que buscan ser los mejores.
It is not difficult to imagine that people like this after all suffer, they have anxieties and will be respected and admired by people but never understood. Genius is often accompanied by great sadness. Harmon, after defeating many opponents, begins to become dependent on alcohol and sedatives and flirts with drugs in search of peace, of peace in the face of pressure that haunts her day after day.
The end of the series is more than predictable but the important thing is not what we can intuit but the whole course of the story that is presented before our eyes. The adversities that Beth had to face throughout her life, the death of her adoptive mother, alcoholism, heartbreak and eventual defeat. All these adversities were defeated by a character worthy of admiration who pushed his spirit to the end, exploiting his capabilities to the fullest and making it possible to see that a glamorous woman can also be a woman with exceptional abilities, something that we can appreciate in real life with Yuja. Wang, a prodigy Chinese pianist who also captivates us with her beauty.
No es difícil imaginar que personas así después de todo sufren, tienen ansiedades y serán respetados y admirados por las personas pero nunca comprendidos. La genialidad frecuentemente está acompañada de grandes tristezas. Harmon después de derrotar a muchos contrincantes empieza a volverse dependiente del alcohol y de los sedantes y coquetea con las drogas en búsqueda de la paz, del sosiego ante una presión que le persigue día tras día.
El final de la serie es más que predecible pero lo importante no es lo que podamos intuir sino todo el transcurso de la historia que se nos presenta ante nuestros ojos. Las adversidades que Beth tuvo que afrontar a lo largo de su vida, la muerte de su madre adoptiva, el alcoholismo, el desamor y una eventual derrota. Todas estas adversidades fueron derrotadas por un personaje digno de admiración que impulso su espíritu hasta el final, explotando sus capacidades al máximo y haciendo ver que una mujer glamorosa también puede ser una mujer con habilidades excepcionales, cosa que podemos apreciar en la vida real con Yuja Wang, una pianista china prodigio que también nos cautiva con su belleza.
If you are good at something, you must keep working to be the best. Mediocrity and conformity should never be our goal, stagnation is a dangerous area that leads us to dark but quiet places.
That is what I saw in the spirit of this character. An uncontrolled passion, a vitality rarely seen and a woman who knew how to face each of her adversities and finally defeat her weaknesses. This is a truly feminist story without bordering on the stereotyping of a woman who fights with male adversaries and where the man has never been faced with his opposite gender. We are talking about the 50s and 60s where the role of women was still very homey.
In conclusion this is a mini series of seven chapters that will not leave you indifferent. I am sure that it will leave more than one of them wanting to play chess and for others it will be a source of inspiration. This is a story that will hook them from beginning to end, managing to capture their attention to the fullest. I recommend watching this series one hundred percent even if you don't like chess because beyond the game it is a story of struggle, it is a battle that many of us must fight and it is in most cases against ourselves.
Si eres bueno en algo debes seguir trabajando para ser el mejor. La mediocridad y el conformismo nunca deberán ser nuestro objetivo, el estancamiento es una zona peligrosa que nos lleva a oscuros pero tranquilos lugares.
Ese es lo que vi en el espíritu de este personaje. Una pasión descontrolada, una vitalidad pocas veces vista y una mujer que supo afrontar cada una de sus adversidades y finalmente derrotar sus debilidades. Esta es una historia verdaderamente feminista sin rayar en lo estereotipado de una mujer que lucha con adversarios hombres y en donde el hombre nunca se había visto enfrentado con su género opuesto. Estamos hablando de los años 50 y 60 en donde el rol de la mujer era todavía muy hogareño.
En conclusión esta es una mini serie de siete capítulos que no los dejara indiferentes. Estoy seguro que a más de uno lo dejara con ganas de jugar ajedrez y para otros será motivo de inspiración. Esta es una historia que los enganchara de principio a fin, logrando captar su atención al máximo. Recomiendo al cien por cien ver esta serie incluso si no te agrada el ajedrez porque más allá del juego es una historia de lucha, es una batalla que muchos debemos librar y es en la mayoría de los casos en contra de nosotros mismos.
