I was looking for a feel good movie yesterday and found this one. I've recently been watching either very new films on Netflix or opting for old ones. Almost want to say there is no in-between :) but I think there are and I do watch any one that has an intriguing description.
Netflix has this to say about it :
A bumbling producer and his casts of misfits trick Hollywood's leading box office star, Kit Ramsey. into unknowingly appearing in their film.
I thought to myself, that sounds like a fun way to engage in the 90's era, especially with Eddie Murphy in it :)
If Eddie Murphy did not give away the comedic nature of the film, I guess it won't hurt to stress again that this is comedy. Eddie Murphy plays the role of Kit, a self absorbed successful actor who belongs to a Mindhead kind of cult/self help organization with a leader who promises to cure him of his paranoia. You see, Kit thinks he sees aliens everywhere and guess what the film the Bowfinger crew are set on playing? A film titled 'Chubby Rain' which features Kit and aliens. Ha! He refuses to play the film without actually reading what it's about which makes this whole thing so funny.
The Bowfinger producer/director and his unassuming crew(yes, he does not tell them Kit refused to play) get tips about where Mr Kit will be at certain times of the day and play their roles as if he were a part of it, leaving Kit out of his wits and falling into his manic episodes, only this time, they are of course real. Aliens or at least actors playing in an alien film are actually talking to him.
The cast is easy on the eyes. We've got Steve Martin who owns Bowfinger and goes by the same name, Heather Graham, who plays Daisy--a young and 'promising' actress who sleeps her way in the Bowfinger company to get to the top of this farce :). Yep, this counts as a parody film as well. Christine Baranski who plays Carol. And before I forget, Eddie Murphy who again plays himself but this time as his twin brother. You have to watch to know where that part of the puzzle fits.
One thing I liked about this film is how they all win. I was expecting this unexperienced crew with this insane idea to experience troubles. You know, that they would be caught in the middle or that some equipment would fail. They would lose it somehow, yet it surprised me at how efficient they all were. That's why when it ended, I felt exhilarated and I agreed that for the stunt they pulled off, they truly deserved the ovation they got.
So yes, if I were to act as your guide, I would say watch it because as a feel good movie, it's a 10/10 for me.
Cheers!
