Five year ago, David Ayer directed the first Suicide Squad. Though it received mixed reviews and relatively low IMDB score, some of the characters like Joker and Harley Quinn were popular in that time and also the following year. For instance, many people dressed as joker and Harley Quinn during halloween too. Additionally, the love story between joker and harley quinn were used in many music video montages too. Would The Suicide Squad 2 carries the same impact?
This year, James Gunn is directingThe Suicide Squad which is a stand alone sequel movie from the first one. With more supervillains, new actors, and more visual effects, this movie received mixed reviews once more, but with better IMDB score than the first one. So, as a viewer, I was expecting it to be better than the first one. But was it?
Fell into the branding trap
The first few scenes were boring, especially the part with savant. Then, the supervillains were gathered to overthrow an anti-united states government that ended up fighting with a giant alien starfish. For me, there were too many scenes that felt like, “ this looks familiar”. It seems as though it was subtly recreating the old plot and scenes in the old movies into The Suicide Squad with fresh actor and actresses.
I remember from the first Suicide Squad, the leader mentioned, “you’re going somewhere very bad, to do something that’ll get you killed”. In this The Suicide Squad there was also this notion too, as it is basically the part of the idea of this film.
The characters in this movie were similar to the first one. Instead of the alligator who eats humans, they choose the shark who also eats humans. They also have the killer, which in the first movie was played by will smith (deadshot), now it’s played by idris elba (bloodsport).
The Suicide Squad has longer screen time than the first one. It makes quite a sense due to the extra plot where they have to also fight the starfish instead of just overthrowing the anti-US government. Getting through the whole movie was quite tedious for me. The first few minutes of the movie were so boring. So, this movie failed to actually capture my fullest attention even with its cool effects and graphics. However, I could praise the movie for its visual effects. So, if you’re someone who enjoys watching movies full of visual effects, this would be one of your best picks. And finally, I was just another viewer, who fell into the branding trap, expecting something as good as the first one, something that won’t cause me to yawn or say “ how many minutes left?”
Failing to enjoy the movie.
I fail to see how this movie received a 7 IMDB score. Perhaps, it was the characterization of the villains, perhaps it’s the visual effect, or it could be the overall story which seemed better than the first one. Hence people give it a good rating. Just today alone, I have read about 2 reviews on this movie that praised it for its adventure and the darker spin on the movie. But sorry, The Suicide Squad isn’t for me and wasn't better than the first one either.
