A long time ago, in 2007, long before Disney showed us a little more in depth the Mexican culture and tradition as far as the Day of the Dead is concerned, through the film "CoCo", there was already this wonderful gem, yesterday while zapping, I came across it again, so I could not help but watch it again, it is The Legend of the Nahuala, a Mexican production film quite funny, that shows us one of its most significant legends, set in Puebla, one of the richest places in Mexico in terms of culture and folklore, it is a film loaded with many elements with which it is impossible to get bored, so my dear friends, feel comfortable and get ready to know a little more about La Leyenda de la Nahuala.
Hace mucho tiempo, en el 2007, mucho antes de que Disney nos mostrara un poco más a profundidad la cultura y la tradición mexicana en lo que al Día de Muertos se refiere, a través de la película "CoCo", ya existía esta maravillosa joya, ayer mientras hacía zapping, me reencontré con ella, así que no pude evitar volver a verla, se trata de La Leyenda de la Nahuala, un film de producción mexicana bastante divertido, que nos muestra una de sus leyendas más significativas, ambientado en Puebla, uno de los lugares de México más ricos en materia de cultura y folcklore, es una película cargada de muchos elementos con la que es imposible aburrirse, así que mis queridos amigos, siéntanse cómodos y prepárense para conocer un poco más acerca de La Leyenda de la Nahuala.
Overview/Resumen
This is in fact the first film in a saga whose protagonist is Leo San Juan, a boy who at the beginning is shown as a fearful boy whose legs tremble at the slightest noise. The story takes place in the city of Puebla, Mexico, in 1807, that is to say, in the middle of the colonial era, Through a narrator, we learn that there is a legend that says that fifty-two years ago, during the celebration of the Day of the Dead in 1755, a tragedy occurred in the mansion of the Villavicencio family, an aristocratic family and one of the most influential in Puebla. An evil spirit known as Nahual, possessed the cook of the family, and through a curse on the food killed them, later took three girls (among them the grandmother of the protagonist) and tried to sacrifice them for a ritual, but one of the girls managed to save herself and the priest together with some shamans managed to defeat the body of the specter, although its spirit remained in the house and they say that it torments whoever passes near there at night.
Esta es en realidad la primera película de una saga que tiene como protagonista a Leo San Juan, un niño que al principio se nos muestra como un miedoso al que le tiemblan las piernas al oír el menor ruido, la historia transcurre en la ciudad de Puebla, México, en 1807, es decir, plena época colonial, a través de un narrador sabemos que en ese lugar existe una leyenda que dice que hace cincuenta y dos años, durante la celebración del Día de Muertos de 1755, ocurrió una tragedia en la mansión de la familia Villavicencio, una familia aristócrata y una de las más influyentes de Puebla. Un espíritu maligno conocido como Nahual, poseyó a la cocinera de la familia, y a través de una maldición en la comida los mató, posteriormente tomó a tres niñas (entre ellas la abuela del protagonista) e intentó sacrificarlas para un ritual, pero una de las niñas logra salvarse y el sacerdote junto a unos chamanes logran derrotar el cuerpo del espectro, aunque su espíritu permaneció en la casa y dicen que atormenta a quien pase cerca de allí por las noches.
Nando, Leo's brother, our protagonist, constantly bullies him, calling him "coward" or "fearful" because he is easily frightened by horror stories, however, Leo will prove that he is very brave in spite of everything, as he is filled with courage to go and rescue his brother when the Nahuala finally kidnaps him for being too close to the house. Leo begins to gather information about the spectre from the priest, and without thinking twice he goes to the mansion to rescue his brother. Inside the mansion, he begins to live great adventures, overcoming his fears, discovering his own strengths, escaping from dangers, but also making many interesting and why not? supernatural friends.
Nando, el hermano de Leo, nuestro protagonista, constantemente le hace bullying llamándolo "cobarde" o "miedoso" porque se asusta fácilmente con las historias de terror, sin embargo, Leo demostrará que a pesar de todo es muy valiente, pues se llena de valor para ir a rescatar a su hermano cuando la Nahuala finalmente lo secuestra por estar muy cerca de la casa. Leo comienza a recolectar información acerca del espectro a través del sacerdote, y sin pensarlo dos veces se va hacia la mansión dispuesto a rescatar a su hermano. En el interior de la casona, comienza a vivir grandes aventuras, venciendo sus miedos, descubriendo sus propias fortalezas, escapando de peligros, pero también haciendo muchos amigos interesantes y ¿por qué no? Sobrenaturales.

My Opinion/Mi Opinión
There are so many things I would like to say about this film, Wow! I don't even know where to start, but I think I'll start with the story itself, it's fantastic, it's full of references to Mexican culture, and although Mexico is not my country, I can identify with it because somehow we share certain elements of folklore throughout Latin America, although in my opinion, Mexico has more cultural elements, at least known, than the rest of Latin America and the producers knew how to take advantage of them very well, such as the Day of the Dead, the alebrijes, the sugar skulls (which in this case did not play a very important role but were an added value) and of course the Nahuales, although I have to say that they took them a bit out of context in this film, since according to what I know about these beings from pre-Hispanic Mesoamerican beliefs, the Nahuales were not evil spirits, but shamans or wizards who had the power to turn into animals, just that.
Hay tantas cosas que me gustaría decir de este film ¡Wow! No sé ni por donde empezar, pero creo que lo haré por la propia historia, es fantástica, está llena de referencias a la cultura mexicana, y aunque México no es mi país, sí que puedo llegar a sentirme identificada porque de alguna manera compartimos ciertos elementos del folcklore en toda Latinoamérica, aunque en mi opinión, México tiene más elementos culturales, al menos conocidos, que el resto de Latinoamérica y que los productores supieron aprovechar muy bien, como El Día de Muertos, los alebrijes, las calaveritas de azúcar (que en este caso no cumplieron un papel muy importante pero fueron un valor agregado) y desde luego los Nahuales, aunque sí tengo que decir que los sacaron un poco de contexto en esta película, ya que según lo que yo sé de estos seres propios del las creencias prehispánicas mesoamericanas, los Nahuales no eran espíritus malignos, sino chamanes o magos que tenían la potestad de convertirse en animales, solo eso.
the producers knew how to give a colourful touch to this film through its characters, all very different from each other, among which stand out Leo, a simple boy, but with a noble and brave heart, his brother Nando, a complete idiot, Fray Godofredo (a character quite decisive for the plot), Xóchitl, a very brave girl, who becomes one of Leo's guides through the house, Don Andrés, who is a kind of Don Quijote de la Mancha, he looks like a nutcase but in reality he helps Leo a lot with the Alebrije, I really like that he speaks with a Spanish accent, which reminds us that the story takes place in a colonial environment, and finally my favourite character is Teodora 🤣 it is impossible not to laugh with her scenes, Teodora is a ghost, but she is a very capricious and snobbish girl, who depreciates Leo for being poor, but still her comments, although they can be annoying I can't help but admit that they are funny, as are her facial expressions, and most importantly she also helps the boy throughout the plot.
los productores supieron darle un toque variopinto a esta película a través de sus personajes, todos muy diferentes entre sí, entre los cuales destacan Leo, un chico sencillo, pero con un corazón noble y valiente, su hermano Nando, un completo idiota, Fray Godofredo (un personaje bastante determinante para la trama) Xóchitl, una chica bastante valiente, quien se convierte en una de las guías de Leo a través de la casa, Don Andrés, quien es una especie de Don Quijote de la Mancha, parece un chiflado pero en realidad ayuda muchísimo a Leo junto al Alebrije, me gusta mucho que al hablar tiene acento castellano, lo que nos recuerda que la historia transcurre en un ámbito colonial, y finalmente mi personaje favorito es Teodora 🤣 es imposible no reírse con sus escenas, Teodora es un fantasma, pero es una niña muy caprichosa y Snob, que deprecia a Leo por ser pobre, pero aún así sus comentarios, aunque pueden resultar molestos no puedo dejar de admitir que son graciosos, al igual que sus expresiones faciales, y lo más importante es que también ayuda al chico a lo largo de la trama.
Something that I found very funny in the plot, is that when Leo meets Teodora, she is playing the harpsichord while interpreting a famous song by the Spanish band "Mecano", it is "No es Serio este Cementerio" (This Cemetery is not Serious) a song that talks about death and how even though it comes to everyone equally, there are still distinctions between social classes, but anyway the dead always find a way to have fun. Teodora's voice is shrill 😆 🤣 and even though she is a ghost, Leo is not afraid of her, but begins to hate her for being a petulant and rude girl.
Algo que me pareció muy gracioso en la trama, es que cuando Leo conoce a Teodora, ella está tocando el clave mientras interpreta una famosa canción de la banda española Mecano, se trata de "No es Serio este Cementerio" un tema que habla de la muerte y de como a pesar de que esta le llega a todos por igual, aún así hay distinciones entre clases sociales, pero de todos modos los muertos siempre hallan la forma de divertirse. La voz de Teodora es chillona y estridente 😆 🤣 y a pesar de que es un fantasma, Leo no le teme, sino que comienza a odiarla por ser una chica petulante y grosera.
I really liked the character development, Leo being one of the most significant, he shows us that being brave is not about the absence of fear, but about facing it, yet as Leo has to face dangers and even Nahuala herself, he becomes stronger and stronger and gains self-confidence, that confidence that was affected by his brother's bullying.
Me gustó mucho el desarrollo de personajes, siendo Leo uno de los más significativos, nos demuestra que ser valiente no tiene que ver con la ausencia del miedo, sino con enfrentarlo, aún así, a medida que a Leo le toca enfrentarse a peligros y hasta a la propia Nahuala, él se va volviendo cada vez más fuerte y a ganar seguridad en sí mismo, esa seguridad que se veía afectada por el bullying de su hermano.
The cinematography is fantastic, resorting to dark colours and opaque filters for the scenes where fear is the protagonist, while the scenes that represent joy and well-being are full of light and colour. I especially loved the final scene, where all the ghosts of the Villavicencio mansion go to celebrate the Day of the Dead in Leo's family's bakery.
La fotografía es fantástica, recurriendo a colores oscuros y filtros opacos para las escenas donde el miedo es el protagonista, en cambio las escenas que representan la alegría y el bienestar están llenas de luz y color, sobre todo me encantó la escena final, donde todos los fantasmas de la mansión Villavicencio se van a celebrar el Día de Muertos en la panadería de la familia de Leo.
It is a pity that the film is not dubbed into English or at least has no subtitles, so English speakers can't enjoy it, but anyway if you are Latino or speak Spanish, I invite you to watch it because it is really worth it and you will laugh a lot with some scenes. Es una lástima que la película no esté doblada al inglés o que al menos no tenga subtítulos, de esta forma las personas angloparlantes no pueden disfrutar de ella, pero de todos modos si eres latino o hablas español, te invito a verla porque de verdad vale mucho la pena y te reirás un montón con algunas escenas.
