Friends, how are you? I know I've talked on previous occasions about this film as I consider it to be the best and the scariest in its genre, but yesterday I came across a video of a deleted scene that I had not seen before, not even in the 2000 version where they had supposedly added all the scenes of the film, it is absolutely impressive not only for the standards of that time but for the ones we have today.
Amigos ¿cómo están? Sé que he hablado en ocasiones anteriores sobre este film ya que lo considero como el mejor y el más aterrador en su genero, pero ayer me topé con un video de una escena eliminada que yo no había visto antes, ni siquiera en la versión del 2000 donde supuestamente habían añadido todas las escenas de la película, es absolutamente impresionante no solo para los estándares de esa época sino para los que tenemos actualmente.
Remember the scene on the stairs? I mean the scene where Regan comes down the stairs like some kind of "human spider" with blood coming out of her mouth, that scene was not in the final cut of the film when it was released in 1973, because Friedkin (the director) considered that it should not be in the film firstly because it broke with the impact of the characters when they found out about the death of Burke Dennings, and secondly because according to his criteria, the wires holding the actress were very evident, however he decided to take this scene out when the film was remastered and re-released in 2000.

Me refiero a la escena donde Regan baja las escaleras como si fuese una especie de "araña humana" mientras le sale sangre por la boca, esa escena no salió en el corte final de la película en su estreno en 1973, ya que Friedkin (el director) consideraba que no debía estar en la película en primer lugar porque rompía con el impacto de los personajes al enterarse de la muerte de Burke Dennings, y en segundo lugar porque según su criterio, los cables que sostenían a la actriz eran muy evidentes, no obstante decidió sacar esta escena cuando la pelicula fue remasterizada y reestrenada en el año 2000
I'm not going to lie, when I saw that scene in the cinema in 2000 (I was 15 years old and the manager didn't want to let me in and I had to beg him) I was very shocked, it was a bizarre and impressive scene, but now that I've seen it so many times as an adult, I realise that it's not so impressive, and I'm not talking about the strange way of going down the stairs, after all, possessed characters do erratic things like that, and that's the point that generates terror, what I mean is that I think the blood in the character's mouth was too much, it's as if they only wanted to generate an ephemeral impact, in the same way they do nowadays with the famous Jump scare in horror movies that makes them so predictable.
No les voy a mentir, cuando yo vi esa escena en el cine en el año 2000 (yo tenía 15 años y el encargado no quería dejarme entrar y tuve que rogarle) me impacté mucho, era una escena bizarra e impresionante, pero ahora que la he visto tantas veces siendo adulta, me doy cuenta de que no es tan impresionante , y no me refiero a la forma extraña de bajar por las escaleras, al fin y al cabo los personajes posesos hacen cosas erráticas como esa, y ese es el punto que genera terror, a lo que me refiero es que pienso que la sangre en la boca del personaje estaba de más, es como si solo hubiesen querido generar un impacto efímero, de la misma forma en que lo hacen hoy en día con los famosos Jump scare en las películas de terror que las hace tan predecibles.
However, yesterday I discovered a scene that I had not seen before, which I think was much better, also because it corresponds to a scene from the book in which the film is inspired, the scene was filmed together with the previous one but it was also discarded in the 1973 edition and did not appear in the 2000 edition.
Sin embargo ayer descubrí una escena que yo no había visto antes, la cual me parece que estuvo muchísimo mejor, además porque corresponde con una escena del libro en el cual está inspirado el film, la escena fue grabada junto con la anterior pero también la desecharon en la edición de 1973 y no apareció en la del 2000.
In this scene Regan also starts to descend the stairs as if she were a human spider, but suddenly she turns to a stalking position while watching her mother and Sharon from above, then starts to stick out her tongue as if she were a snake, and finally crawls down the stairs on all fours while repeatedly sticking out her tongue and chasing after Sharon, who starts to scream.
En esta escena Regan también comienza a bajar las escaleras como si fuese una araña humana, pero de pronto se gira para quedar en posición de asecho mientras vigila desde lo alto a su madre y a Sharon, entonces comienza a sacar la lengua como si fuese una serpiente, y finalmente baja rápidamente las escaleras a gatas sin dejar de sacar la lengua repetidas veces y se empeña en perseguir a Sharon que comienza a gritar.
I think this version is much better for several reasons, firstly because it is a faithful adaptation to the book that is supposed to be inspired by a true story, secondly because without being sensationalist or too elaborate (as in the case of the blood) it generates more impact and fear. The scene is frightening because we see a character stalking others, because her way of sticking out her tongue reminds us of snakes, which are historically associated with evil, and finally because, in the case of those who have a minimum knowledge of demonology, they know that the tongue sticking out is a synonym for rebellion, mockery and often opposition to the divine. It is a profane symbol when we talk about demonic possessions.
Creo que esta versión es mucho mejor por varias razones, en primer lugar porque es una adaptación fiel al libro que se supone está inspirado en una historia real, en segundo lugar porque sin ser sensacionalista o demasiado elaborada (como en el caso de la sangre) genera mayor impacto y temor. La escena asusta porque vemos a un personaje asechando a otros, porque su forma de sacar la lengua nos recuerda a las serpientes quienes históricamente están asociadas al mal y finalmente porque, en el caso de los que tengan un mínimo conocimiento en demonología, saben que la lengua afuera es un sinónimo de rebeldía, de burla y muchas veces de oposición a lo divino, es un símbolo profano cuando hablamos de posesiones demoniacas.
In short, I think that much more impact and terror is generated with simple but significant scenes like this than by abusing jump scares and special effects. What do you think? Have you seen this scene?
