Thinking of a Horror movie that was made in 2021, THE WASTELAND AKA THE BEAST is what you should look out for. It is a Spanish horror movie made in 2021 that is based on a mother and son who lives in an isolated land that is threatened by a wild creature.
The movie was directed by David Casademunt who is featuring from a screenplay which he wrote with Marti Lucas and Menchon Fran.it was produced by Marina Padro, Mar Targorona and Joaquin Padro starring Inma Cuesta, Alejandra Howard, Roberto Alamo and Asier Flores.
The original concept of the movie was gotten in 2012 by David Casademunt who started turning the idea into a screenplay, it then became a film officially in September 2017 when it was chosen as part of the sitges film festival program, which was to be directed by David Casademunt the film got support from Ventana Blood window pitching program and funds from Madrid Film school, the script of the movie got completed in 2018.
The Spanish production company Radar y Radar joined as the main producer of the movie in February 2020. David Casademunt described the film as a movie talking about the demons that are inside humans from childhood which turn them into defective adults in the long run.
In 2020 it was made public that Netflix has gotten approval to distribute the movie worldwide. The principal photography started in February 2021 and was done until July 2021, the movie was shot mostly in a moorland somewhere in Teruel and some areas like Blancas and villarquemado also the lagoons of Gallocanta and El canizar.
The movie was set as a world premiere in October 2021 at the Sitges film festival and was a part of the festival official selection. The movie was released on Netflix worldwide on 6th of January 2022. The film length is an hour and thirty two minutes which is about 92 minutes.
PLOT
Inma Cuesta who acted as Lucia and her son Asier Flores who acted as Diego lived far from the society in a place where there is no life in an attempt to take refuge from war, the family of the monther, son and father don't usually recieve any visitor and they just have a goal of living a peaceful life.
Everything seems to be going according to plans until a mysterious happening took place where a violent and Mysterious creature began to haunt them and was putting a test to their unity as a family, will they overcome or the relationship will be broken?
CRTICS
The wasteland seems quite familiar to but with a different settings entirely, it is a horror movie which happened during the pandemic which took place in Spain in the 19th century, it made use of majorly three characters.
A beast somewhere in the darkness around the abode of the small family of a nother father and son which prompted the saying in the movie "JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN'T SEE IT DOESN'T MEAN IT ISN'T THERE".
They were able to escape violence that brought down their country and have brought down alot of humans, it is a movie with a concept of confined space or an enclosed area with the fear of going back to the outside world which is quite captivating.
Asier Flores who is a young actor with so much vibes and energy played the role of Diego who is more like the major cast as he serves as both our eyes and ears, he experienced the beast manifesting itself among his parents and was torn between two people with different approach to the issue at hand, his father Roberto Alamo (Salvador) is a man of few words who was more concerned about Diego learning how to shoot a gun and Gift him a rifle that has been monogramed as his birthday present.
His mother Imma Cuesta (Lucia) is a stronger woman who is less scared and has the spirit of control desires to guide Diego through the world they have found themselves in a calmer and less violent way, Diego in the middle observes both parents and keeps quiet as he tries to figure out what both parents wants and how they could cope among all happenings.
The three major cast put in all their best and performed wonderfully and still give the movie the seriousness it deserves and also give life to the film whenever the movie itself gets dry.
The only time Diego can leave the house and go a bit far from the house is when he needs to use the other room at night which one of the parents must go with him holding a rifle ready for any action, there is unease around the house as the omen seen from afar and the always quiet terrain around the home also intensify the uneasiness.
The script writers and the director did a good work in creating a standard and well aligning atmosphere for the scenes and script at large.
The production of the film is beautiful even with the use of very minimal casts and resources. The cinematographer Vila Isaac also did a good job in the painting of their homes, moonlight, and a wide range shot of their home giving a full scope of the environment.
The suspense was so much that there was no iota of idea about what the beast actually looks like, the threat and fear was there after the sight of a dead bloodied man who was seen on a boat.
The movie then transit to become a survival story where the beast which attacks the parents is actually a psychotic disorder characterized by delusions or in a short word Paranoia. Diego then learns that there is a beast which feed on the vulnerability of a person.
The fact that this fact wasn't known on time was how the concept of the movie came to play. David Casademunt created a few horror set, which actually lacks some spark that could make it have a deeper effect.
The wasteland movie is a movie which has more wide range of visual sense than some of the last movies that has been produced, but doesn't in the actually sense send in chills in the spine of the viewer it's not a nightmare giving movie.
