[ESP] | [ENG] — Alguien llama desde el otro lado: "El Teléfono del Sr. Harrigan" - reseña sin spoilers.

Para nadie es secreto que la plataforma de streaming Netflix todos los años promete a sus usuarios ampliar su parrilla de programación estrenando películas y series casi que de manera semanal, pero (he aquí el gran pero) en muchas ocasiones, mis queridos amigos, la cuestión está en que cantidad no va de la mano con la calidad, por lo que apesar de que Netflix posee un amplio contenido para satisfacer a una gran variedad de gustos...no muchas veces la jugada les resulta tan favorable y su contenido termina no agradando demasiado al público. Un claro ejemplo de esto último es una de las nuevas películas de la plataforma estrenada el pasado 5 de Octubre y que lleva por nombre “El teléfono del señor Harrigan”, la cual es una adaptación de la novela corta homónima escrita por Stephen King.

Como les prometí en una publicación pasada, durante este Octubre aprovecharía para reseñar muchos de esos estrenos de películas y series de la temática de terror y misterio en honor a esta fecha tan particular del año. Los que ya habrán visto esta película, me dirán que no puede se incluida dentro de ese género y sí, lo sé, estoy 100% consciente de eso, pero la incluyo dentro de este conjunto de reseñas del mes Octubre porque desde el inicio Netflix nos vendió una idea diferente de lo que en realidad es esta adaptación creando así ciertas expectativas en el público, como por ejemplo que esta película podría sacarnos uno que otro susto...cosa que realmente no fue así, pero mejor sigue leyendo para que sepas a qué me refiero con esto.

It's no secret that the Netflix streaming platform promises its users every year to expand its programming schedule by releasing movies and series almost weekly, but (here's the big but) on many occasions, my dear friends, the issue is that quantity does not go hand in hand with quality, so even though Netflix has a wide range of content to satisfy a variety of tastes...not many times the move is so favorable and its content ends up not pleasing the public too much. A clear example of the latter is one of the platform's new movies released last October 5 and named "Mr. Harrigan's Telephone", which is an adaptation of the short story of the same name written by Stephen King.

As I promised you in a previous post, during this October I would take the opportunity to review many of those movie and series releases of the horror and mystery theme in honor of this particular date of the year. Those who have already seen this movie, will tell me that it cannot be included in that genre and yes, I know, I am 100% aware of that, but I include it in this set of reviews for the month of October because from the beginning Netflix sold us a different idea of what this adaptation really is, creating certain expectations in the public, such as that this movie could scare us...which it really wasn't, but better read on so you know what I mean by this.

El teléfono del señor Harrigan nos presenta a Craig, un niño que ha perdido a su madre y que queda a cargo de su padre quien se nos deja ver -por las mismas palabras de Craig- que no ha logrado superar la muerte de su esposa, recodándola día tras días con profunda nostalgia. Por otra parte, tenemos al señor Harrigan, un multimillonario de tercera edad y de temperamento fuerte que vive en una gran mansión y que termina fichando al muchacho para ofrecerle un trabajo bastante particular: leer en voz alta para él algunas de las grandes obras de la literatura universal.

Cada vez Craig finaliza la lectura de un nuevo libro, el señor Harrigan solía consultarle su opinión y, entre preguntas básicas, se terminaba desarrollando una serie de reflexiones interesantes sobre cómo enfrentar las obstáculos impuestos de la vida. A este punto es donde Harrigan le brinda grandes consejos a su joven empleado y, como si fuese todo un visionario, lo prepara para el destino que lo aguarda.

Mr. Harrigan's telephone introduces us to Craig, a boy who has lost his mother and is left in the care of his father, who we learn - from Craig's own words - that he has not been able to get over the death of his wife, remembering her day after day with deep nostalgia. On the other hand, we have Mr. Harrigan, an elderly and strong-tempered multimillionaire who lives in a large mansion and who ends up signing the boy to offer him a very particular job: reading aloud for him some of the great works of world literature.

Every time Craig finished reading a new book, Mr. Harrigan used to ask him for his opinion and, between basic questions, a series of interesting reflections on how to face the obstacles imposed by life ended up developing. It is at this point that Harrigan gives great advice to his young employee and, as if he were a visionary, it seems as if he is preparing him for the destiny that awaits him.

Con el paso del tiempo, se comienza a construir un fuerte lazo de amistad entre el anciano multimillonario y el adolescente más que todo porque ambos tienen algo en común: la soledad y, de cierta manera, esa compañía llenaba una pequeña carencia que ambos, muy dentro de sí, tenían. En un punto, Craig decide tener un gesto de agradecimiento con su mentor por lo que le obsequia un iPhone, un elemento que pasará a ser clave durante el resto de la historia. En un principio el Sr. Harrigan se muestra un poco reacio a querer usar el smartphone y, por ende, a comprender su funcionamiento pero gracias a la explicaciones el adolescente, el anciano termina descubriendo todo lo que se puede hacer desde ese pequeño dispositivo y comienza a experimentar una serie de sensaciones, desde estar abrumado y preocupado hasta estar sorprendido, pues en una especie de ateque reflexivo, se da cuenta del peligro de consumir información no contrastada de forma gratuita en la Internet.

Todo marchaba relativamente bien, hasta que el multimillonario parte de este plano y es ahí donde inician los supuestos "acontecimientos extraños" pues el joven comienza a recibir extraños mensajes de texto y llamadas procedentes desde el iPhone del señor Harrigan y que parecen estar relacionados con desafortunados accidentes en los que se ven involucradas ciertas personas que decidan dañar a Craig o a sus seres cercanos.

As time goes by, a strong bond of friendship begins to build between the old multimillionaire and the teenager, mostly because they both have something in common: loneliness and, in a way, that company filled a small lack that both of them, deep inside, had. At one point, Craig decides to make a gesture of gratitude to his mentor by giving him an iPhone, an element that will be key for the rest of the story. At first Mr. Harrigan is a bit reluctant to want to use the smartphone and, therefore, to understand how it works, but thanks to the teenager's explanations, the old man ends up discovering everything that can be done from that small device and begins to experience a series of feelings, from being overwhelmed and worried to being surprised, because in a kind of reflexive atheism, he realizes the danger of consuming unverified information for free on the Internet.

Everything was going relatively well, until the multimillionaire leaves this plane and that is where the alleged "strange events" begin, as the young man begins to receive strange text messages and calls from Mr. Harrigan's iPhone that seem to be related to unfortunate accidents involving certain people who decide to harm Craig or those close to him.

Antes de dar mi completa opinión al respecto, quiero dejar en claro que no he leído la novela de Stephen King en la cual está basada esta adaptación, así que mi opinión está enmarcada netamente en lo que me transmitió la historia que vi en la película, por lo que no pretendo –evidentemente– hacer ningún tipo de contraste entre el escrito y la adaptación. El teléfono del señor Harrigan puede que decepcione –si no es que ya lo hizo– a aquellos que esperan una película, digamos que, de un terror evidente...de ese que te mantiene a la expectativa y en el momento en el cual menos te lo esperabas hace que te lleves un susto del bueno. En realidad esta es una película que posee un cierto tinte nostálgico y que tiende más hacia una especie de fábula moral y de reflexión sobre: la sociedad en la que vivimos y los miedos propios que tenemos como especie. También logra que nos cuestionemos acerca de cómo es nuestra relación con la tecnología y, aunque parece un tanto absurdo, toda esta realidad permite que se mezcle de forma muy sutil con lo sobrenatural para hacernos pensar qué tipo de puertas estamos dispuestos a abrir y hasta qué punto estamos solos en este mundo y necesitamos que, de cierta forma, exista una justicia divina que pueda hacerse cargo y sentencie de forma justa a todo ese mal que habita en el mundo.

Dentro de mi reflexión sobre este película, también puedo destacar que se intenta trasmitir de cierta forma lo que es estar ligado a una pérdida y que en esos casos no sirve demasiado intentar llenar ciertos vacíos entre nosotros como si estuviésemos tapando el Sol con un dedo, tratando de ocultar algo en lugar de hacerle frente para evitar nuestro dolor cuando en realidad lo más acertado es aprender a soltar para así poder estar más tranquilos con nosotros mismos y con nuestro entorno. A veces, algunas "señales" que nos envía el Universo no son más que una especie de mensaje para hacernos caer en cuenta de que es momento de superar el obstáculo, no atascarnos y continuar hacia adelante...que fue básicamente lo que ocurrió con nuestro amigo Craig.

Before giving my full opinion on the matter, I want to make it clear that I have not read the Stephen King novel on which this adaptation is based, so my opinion is framed purely on what the story I saw in the movie conveyed to me, so I do not intend -evidently- to make any kind of contrast between the writing and the adaptation. Mr. Harrigan's Telephone may disappoint -if it hasn't already- those who are expecting a film, let's say, of an obvious horror... the kind that keeps you waiting and when you least expect it, it scares the hell out of you. In reality this is a film that has a certain nostalgic tinge and tends more towards a kind of moral fable and reflection on: the society in which we live and the fears we have as a species. It also makes us question ourselves about our relationship with technology and, although it seems somewhat absurd, all this reality allows it to mix in a very subtle way with the supernatural to make us think about what kind of doors we are willing to open and to what extent we are alone in this world and we need that, somehow, there is a divine justice that can take charge and fairly sentence all the evil that inhabits the world.

In my reflection on this film, I can also highlight that it tries to transmit in a certain way what it is to be linked to a loss and that in those cases it is not very useful to try to fill certain gaps between us as if we were covering the sun with a finger, trying to hide something instead of facing it to avoid our pain when in reality the best thing to do is to learn to let go so we can be calmer with ourselves and our environment. Sometimes, some "signals" that the Universe sends us are nothing more than a kind of message to make us realize that it's time to overcome the obstacle, not get stuck and move forward...which is basically what happened with our friend Craig.

Ahora, dejando un poco de lado la reflexión que rescato de toda la trama, me centraré en otros aspectos, como por ejemplo el hecho de que detecté varios vacíos en ella. Sentí que en algún punto comenzaba a irse por las ramas y algunas ideas se quedaban en el aire, sin ser desarrolladas a profundidad. Incluso siento que esa relación de amistad entre un adolescente y señor mayor pudo llegar a ser mucho más explotada, sacando algo interesante de todo ese asunto. Por otra parte, habían demasiados personajes secundarios que no sumaban ni restaban valor a la trama, simplemente estaban ahí por estar y no desempeñaban ningún papel importante.

Pero creo que mi mayor problema con toda esta película se encuentra en el hecho de cómo Netflix intentó vendérsela a la audiencia. Esta cinta se publicitó más como una película de thriller y terror que adapta una historia de Stephen King y, como ya mencioné en párrafos anteriores, “El teléfono del señor Harrigan” carece de estos elementos por completo. Creo que el sello de King en esta cinta confunde un poco a los espectadores, pero aún así habría que leerse la novela homónima para poder establecer comparaciones, pero por fuera de eso puedo decir que quizás a la película le faltó algo más de emoción para mi gusto. No es que sea una película terrible, pero tampoco es que es la mejor. Sí creo que pudieron haber sacado mucho más partido de ella y haber combinado de una forma más efectiva todos los elementos. Sin embargo, como comenté, hay mucho mensajes que se pueden rescatar como la superación del dolor y la terrible dependencia que tenemos a la tecnología que cada día más controla nuestras vidas.

Now, leaving aside the reflection that I rescue from the whole plot, I will focus on other aspects, such as the fact that I detected several gaps in it. I felt that at some point it began to go off the rails and some ideas were left in the air, without being developed in depth. I even feel that the friendship between a teenager and an older man could have been much more exploited, getting something interesting out of the whole thing. On the other hand, there were too many secondary characters that neither added nor subtracted value to the plot, they were just there for the sake of being there and didn't play any important role.

But I think my biggest problem with this entire film lies in the fact of how Netflix tried to sell it to the audience. This tape was advertised more as a thriller and horror film that adapts a Stephen King story and, as I mentioned in previous paragraphs, "Mr. Harrigan's Telephone" lacks these elements completely. I think King's stamp on this film confuses viewers a bit, but you'd still have to read the novel of the same name to make comparisons, but other than that I can say that perhaps the film lacked a little more excitement for my taste. It's not that it's a terrible movie, but it's not that it's the best either. I do think they could have gotten a lot more out of it and combined all the elements in a more effective way. However, as I said, there are many messages that can be rescued such as _**overcoming pain and the terrible dependence we have on technology that controls our lives more and more every day.
