[ESP] | [ENG] — El misterio que ocultan unas cintas de vídeo: "Archivo 81" (reseña sin spoilers).

Hace un par de meses atrás me topé con una serie de Netflix estrenada a principios de este año y que, básicamente, su trama reunía muchos de los elementos que particularmente suelen llamar mucho mi atención: suspenso, intriga, sucesos paranormales y terror psicológico. Desde el primer capítulo de Archivo 81 se nos brinda una buena dosis de tensión y curiosidad sobre la historia que se nos propone, pero todo en su justa medida y con esto quiero decir que no nos daremos de golpe frente a algún sobresalto o susto no apto para personas cardíacas como suele ocurrir en otras series o películas de este mismo género.

A pesar de que la historia de esta serie navega por los elementos que mencioné anteriormente, increíblemente, cada capítulo logra envolverte de una manera asombrosa en donde se logra digerir fácilmente todos estos elementos que se nos plantean sin la constante preocupación de que en cualquier momento se nos presente una escena fuerte que nos cause un susto y que toda la magia de la intriga se rompa. Esto, de cierta forma, hace que nos sumerjamos de lleno, llegando al punto de que querer saber más y más hasta lograr descubrir todo el misterio que involucra a los protagonistas. Es una historia que vale mucho la pena ver y es por eso que he querido realizar su reseña para compartir un poco mi opinión sobre esta serie original de Netflix.

Archivo 81 es una serie de suspenso y ficción sobrenatural basada en un podcast homónimo de misterio muy famoso en Estados Unidos. Esta serie mezcla ciertos elementos interesantes en su historia como ocultismo, vecinos extraños, posesiones y… ¡sorpresa! un edificio bastante raro donde suelen suceder cosas nada normales. La historia comienza cuando a Dan Turner, un experto en restauración de cintas de vídeo, le encargan la restauración de una cinta de vídeo del año 1994 que se vio gravemente afectada debido a un incendio. Gracias a esta grabación conocemos a Melody Pendras, una joven cineasta que se adentró en el año 1994 en el misterioso Edificio Visser para realizar su tesis de postgrado que consistía en realizar un documental sobre la vida de los habitantes de ese edificio.

Debido al buen trabajo realizado por Dan, el cliente que encargó esta primera cinta, el empresario Virgil Davenport, le propone al chico que trabaje en una casa a las afueras de la ciudad restaurando las demás cintas de vídeo recuperadas del incendio del edificio Visser de Nueva York en 1994 y que, quizás, puedan ayudar a resolver el misterio de la desaparición de la joven cineasta tras el incendio ocurrido en el edificio. Sin embargo, Dan rechaza la oferta por el simple hecho de que Davenport no le daba buena espina ya que conocía sobre un hecho traumático sobre su vida: había perdido a su familia en un incendio cuando apenas él era un niño.

File 81 is a suspense and supernatural fiction series based on a podcast with the same name of a very famous mystery in the United States. This series mixes certain interesting elements in its story such as occultism, strange neighbors, possessions and... surprise! a pretty weird building where not normal things usually happen. The story begins when Dan Turner, a videotape restoration expert, is commissioned to restore a 1994 videotape that was severely damaged due to a fire. Thanks to this recording we meet Melody Pendras, a young filmmaker who went into the mysterious Visser Building in 1994 to complete her graduate thesis, which consisted of making a documentary about the lives of the inhabitants of that building.

Due to the good work done by Dan, the client who commissioned this first tape, the businessman Virgil Davenport, proposes to the boy to work in a house on the outskirts of the city restoring the other videotapes recovered from the fire of the Visser Building in New York in 1994 and that, perhaps, can help to solve the mystery of the disappearance of the young filmmaker after the fire occurred in the building. However, Dan turns down the offer for the simple fact that Davenport didn't look good for him because he knew about a traumatic event in his life: he had lost his family in a fire when he was just a child.

Sin embargo, al revisar la cinta por segunda vez, Dan se da cuenta de que Melody, de alguna forma, tenía cierto vínculo con su padre el psicólogo Steven Turner. Esto último termina motivando a Dan a aceptar la propuesta de Davenport y es así como se interna en una misteriosa casa a las afueras de la ciudad donde estará completamente incomunicado del mundo, sin cobertura ni conexión a Internet. A partir de aquí la historia comienza a alternarse entre dos narrativas: el presente con Dan y el pasado con Melody.

En las cintas, vemos como Melody hace grandes intentos por interactuar con sus vecinos, pero ella de inmediato se da cuenta de que muchos de ellos son un tanto extraños y que, en definitiva, están ocultando algo bastante turbio, así que en un intento por descubrir lo que está ocurriendo ella termina envuelta en una situación inexplicable que, de cierta forma, la ayudará también a comprender parte de su historia familiar que ¡vaya sorpresa! guarda mucha relación con todo lo que ocurre dentro del edificio y sus habitantes. En el presente, Dan comienza a verse afectado mentalmente hasta el punto de comenzar a tener sueños extraños y alucinaciones en la estática de la pantalla donde realiza sus trabajos, sumergiéndose entonces como en una especie de “fiebre de la cabaña”. Pese a estas dificultades, logra culminar el trabajo encomendado por Davenport, pero más importante aún: logra descubrir todo el misterio y dar una respuesta a la misteriosa desaparición de Melody, dejándonos con un final simplemente alucinante y que, al menos yo, no me lo vi venir.

However, upon reviewing the tape a second time, Dan realizes that Melody somehow had a certain link to her father, psychologist Steven Turner. The latter ends up motivating Dan to accept Davenport's proposal and that is how he gets into a mysterious house on the outskirts of the city where he will be completely cut off from the world, without coverage or Internet connection. From here the story begins to alternate between **two narratives: the present with Dan and the past with Melody.

In the tapes, we see how Melody makes great attempts to interact with her neighbors, but she immediately realizes that many of them are somewhat strange and that, ultimately, they are hiding something rather shady, so in an attempt to discover what is going on she ends up involved in an unexplained situation that, in a way, will also help her understand part of her family history that what a surprise! is closely related to everything that happens inside the building and its inhabitants. In the present, Dan begins to find himself mentally affected to the point where he begins to have strange dreams and hallucinations on the static of the screen where he does his work, then plunging into a kind of "cabin fever". Despite these difficulties, he manages to complete the job entrusted to him by Davenport, but more importantly: he manages to uncover the whole mystery and give an answer to Medoly's mysterious disappearance, leaving us with a simply mind-blowing ending that, at least for me, I didn't see coming.

Como mencioné al principio, la serie no nos presenta grandes escenas de susto ni exabruptos sangrientos típicos de este género, sino por el contrario, los elementos se nos van presentando de una forma en que seamos capaces de disfrutar de la intriga y el suspenso de forma amena dejándonos llevar y obsesionándonos por seguir las pistas para dilucidar el asunto, tal como le ocurre a Dan en cada uno de los capítulos. El formato de la serie sigue el estilo found footage que nos recuerda a cintas como El proyecto de la Bruja de Blair, REC o Actividad Paranormal. También la serie tiene referencias bastante marcadas a películas como El Resplandor o a series de misterio súper clásicas como La dimensión desconocida (The Twilight Zone).

El misterio y cada uno de los sucesos van creciendo poco a poco y de forma bien planificada. Tras cada capítulo le surgen al espectador nuevas interrogantes y, además, se van viendo ciertos cambios en los personajes secundarios, sobre todo en los vecinos de Melody, y se nos ofrece incluso uno vistazo hacia dentro de sus apartamentos para tratar de conocerlos un poco más. Esto sirve de gran ayuda a que los capítulos de la serie no se estanquen, evitándose que se tornen tediosos y monótonos, y también contribuyen a mantener encendida la chispa de curiosidad. La banda sonora es otro punto a favor para la historia que se nos cuenta. En específico, la canción principal resulta ser una melodía muy perturbadora, distorsionada, tétrica que termina instalándose en tu mente y transmitiéndote esa sensación de intranquilidad. Es como si de verdad pudieras experimentar la angustia y tensión que vive nuestra protagonista Melody al estar recluida dentro de ese edificio tan inquietante con vecinos tan extraños. Por otra parte, a pesar de que la trama no es demasiado original que digamos, disfruté mucho de esa estética noventera y de la referencia nostálgica entorno a la era analógica del cine y la televisión.

As I mentioned at the beginning, the series does not present us with big scare scenes or gory outbursts typical of this genre, but on the contrary, the elements are presented in a way that we are able to enjoy the intrigue and suspense in a pleasant way, letting us get carried away and obsessed with following the clues to elucidate the matter, just as it happens to Dan in each of the chapters. The format of the series follows the found footage style that reminds us of films like The Blair Witch Project, REC or Paranormal Activity. The series also has quite marked references to movies like The Shining or to super classic mystery series like The Twilight Zone.

The mystery and each of the events grow little by little and in a well-planned way. After each episode, new questions arise for the viewer and, in addition, we see certain changes in the secondary characters, especially Melody's neighbors, and we are even given a glimpse inside their apartments to try to get to know them a little better. This goes a long way in keeping the series' chapters from becoming stagnant, preventing them from becoming tedious and monotonous, and also helps to keep the spark of curiosity burning. The soundtrack is another point in favor of the story we are told. Specifically, the main song turns out to be a very disturbing, distorted, gloomy melody that ends up settling in your mind and transmitting that feeling of uneasiness. It's as if you could really experience the anguish and tension that our protagonist Melody lives when she is confined inside that disturbing building with such strange neighbors. On the other hand, even though the plot is not too original, I really enjoyed the 90s aesthetics and the nostalgic reference to the analog era of cinema and television.

Pero, como no todo es perfecto, Archivo 81 también tiene algunos aspectos en contra y uno de ellos son los clichés del género de misterio, como por ejemplo, cuando el protagonista está a punto de descubrir algo importante y, ¡oh, vaya sorpresa! era un sueño o simplemente alguien lo termina golpeando por la espalda. Siento que abusan un poco de este recurso, sobre todo en los primeros capítulos. Por otra parte, también logré detectar una que otra incongruencia en la trama y algunos cabos sueltos. Hay algunas subtramas que no terminan de resolverse, así como también hay unos que otros personajes que simplemente quedan a la deriva, no aportan ni restan absolutamente nada a la trama. Y, definitivamente, lo que no me agradó tanto fue ese pequeño elemento muy a lo ciencia ficción que emplearon en los dos últimos capítulos para dar explicación a lo que provocó el incendio del Viesser, creo que pudieron haberlo hecho mejor empleando algún otro recurso y, sin mencionar, que terminaron restándole valor e importancia a la entidad demoníaca que dio origen a todos los acontecimientos.

El final de la temporada sí me atrevo a decir que fue una locura y nos deja más preguntas que respuestas. Este final da pie como para realizar una segunda temporada épica pero, aquí es donde viene la gran decepción: Netflix decidió cancelar la serie...¡vaya Netflix y sus cosas! A pesar de las buenas críticas que recibió Archivo 81, esta terminó despareciendo de la lista de series más consumidas de la plataforma apenas en su cuarta semana. He ahí el motivo por el cual la plataforma de streaming decidió cancelarla. De verdad es una lástima, porque –vuelvo y repito– el final fue de lo más impredecible y desconcertante a tal punto de que se merecía una buena continuación.

But, as not everything is perfect, Archivo 81 also has some aspects against and one of them are the clichés of the mystery genre, for example, when the protagonist is about to discover something important and, oh, what a surprise! it was a dream or simply someone ends up hitting him in the back. I feel that they abuse this resource a bit, especially in the first chapters. On the other hand, I also managed to detect one or another inconsistency in the plot and some loose ends. There are some subplots that don't end up being resolved, as well as some characters that simply drift away, neither adding nor subtracting anything from the plot. And, definitely, what I didn't like so much was that little element very science fiction that they used in the last two chapters to explain what caused the Viesser's fire, I think they could have done it better using some other resource, and not to mention, that they ended up downplaying the value and importance of the demonic entity that gave rise to all the events.

The end of the season I dare to say that it was crazy and leaves us with more questions than answers. This finale sets the stage for an epic second season but, this is where the big disappointment comes in: Netflix decided to cancel the series...go Netflix and their stuff! Despite the good reviews File 81 received, it ended up disappearing from the list of most consumed series on the platform barely in its fourth week. That's why the streaming platform decided to cancel it. It's really a shame, because -I repeat- the ending was so unpredictable and disconcerting that it deserved a good continuation.

Sé que no tiene demasiado sentido ver una serie que quedó con un final abierto y cuya segunda temporada ha sido cancelada, pero al menos la trama está interesante y para distraerse un poco vale la pena. Lo único que resta es inventar teorías en nuestra cabeza de lo que hubiese sucedido en una posible continuación.

I know it doesn't make much sense to watch a series that was left with an open ending and whose second season has been cancelled, but at least the plot is interesting and it's worth it for a little distraction. The only thing left to do is to invent theories in our heads about what would have happened in a possible continuation.
