A TAXI DRIVER (2017) MOVIE REVIEW

Last night, before going to bed, I watched this movie on Netflix. Since it's based on a true event, it makes me eager to watch it. The intriguing South Korean movie Taxi Driver takes me to Seoul through the eyes of a German journalist. This fascinating and provocative film offers a new perspective on societal concerns, along with thrilling action scenes that keep you on the edge of your seat.

German journalist Jürgen "Hans" Schmid, who is presented by Thomas Kretschmann, is the primary subject of the story. Hans, a journalist with a reputation for thorough research, arrives in Seoul with the goal of documenting the 1980 Gwangju Uprising. His objectives, however, go haywire as he gets involved in a web of danger, riots, violence, and corruption.

The movie focuses on South Korea's sociopolitical environment in the 1980s. This movie clearly portrays the brutal environment and government crackdown during that time, giving insight into often-overlooked historical events. The movie expertly combines fictional features with historical details, creating a solid framework for the story.

As Hans, Thomas Kretschmann gives an excellent role, capturing the character's willpower, courage, and vulnerability. His character allows the audience to identify with the journalist's difficulties and the ethical issues he encounters throughout the story.

Kretschmann gets along well with the supporting cast, especially with Ryu Jun-yeol, who plays Kim Man-seob, the oddball taxi driver who becomes Hans' friend and mentor. The character of Ryu is adorable and sympathetic, adding a touch of humour to the movie's greater elements.

Amazing cinematography beautifully depicts Seoul's lively city in the 1980s. The movie successfully contrasts the busy streets with the underlying anxiety and danger, giving me an intense experience. The carefully staged action scenes feature exhilarating thrills and violent automobile chases that will keep you on the tip of your seat.

The movie's timing can feel off at times, with several sequences going on for longer than required. These moments, nevertheless, fade in comparison to the story's overall impact and the cast actors' standout performances. Even after I finished watching it, I am still amazed at how the movie tackled issues like sacrifice, corruption, and the strength of unity.

This powerful and engaging movie presents a distinctive viewpoint on a critical moment in South Korean history. Fans of political dramas and inspiring stories should definitely watch it because it combines historical truth with exhilarating action scenes and outstanding performances. Taxi Driver is an engaging and provocative cinematic experience thanks to Jang Hoon's directing and the standout performances of Thomas Kretschmann and Ryu Jun-yeol.
