It has been a bit of a struggle still to keep up with these and get them out on an exact weekly basis, but I'm still finding the time to watch things while focusing on getting out and also fixing a completely destroyed sleeping pattern. I have missed watching things, but I have been realising how much time it really takes out of your day when you're juggling so many different things at once. At the same time, I have enjoyed the few things I've given some time to. Discovering some more newer releases while venturing into some older television series.
I won't take too much of your time given time is quite the subject this week, so let's get into the recommendations!
1. Touch
It has been a while since I last saw a film that pertains to the romance genre, and while I had low expectations as a result, Touch was a pleasant surprise. An aged man with declining health is told to tie up some loose ends, to which he embarks on an adventure into the past to find his long lost first love. A film that takes us through different cultures, countries, and periods. I really liked the connection of culture and discovery combined with the idea of love, the mutual interest in sharing differences which connected two people. A very well made film.
2. Hellboy
The superhero genre has changed massively over the years, and if a film can really display that change, it's likely to be Guillermo del Toro's 2004 Hellboy. This is a character from Dark Horse which is overlooked quite massively, with the assumption made that nobody really knows how to go about using this character these days, with the more modern entries being flops. This 2004 entry has everything it needs: the dark humoured Hellboy character mixed with the darkness of the comic book style, full of odd fantasy elements and all-out action. Present day Marvel and DC can't compete here.
3. Supernatural
Alright, I admit this one has been a bit of a guilty pleasure as of late, but it's a show that so far has been really surprising me and generally a great lot of fun. Supernatural fills the gap within the fantasy genre with a show that dives into the hunting of various paranormal entities. Two brothers thrown into a world of darkness as they embark on a story of revenge after a demon kills their mother. Each episode is different from the last, though the show boasts a broader narrative that slowly starts to form. There's nothing like it these days, though I'd say it's a more light-hearted version of something like The X Files.
4. 3 Body Problem
There are two versions of this show available: one made in the west, and another made in China. I'd probably recommend both of them at this point. The west's version has some of the usual annoyances a television show made today is likely to have. And in parts it feels like a show that can't take itself that seriously despite the subject. This is a show that'd be very easy to spoil so I won't speak much of the synopsis here. But ultimately a friend is killed, to which the friends discover a strange truth about that friend which leads them into a problem for the entirety of Earth.
Probably the most varied recommendations post thus far, but I hope you can all find something within it! As always, have fun watching, and I look forward to seeing whether any of you write about these yourself in the community!
