If you're a fan of the Game of Thrones universe, then you should know that a prequel called “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is currently airing. Produced by HBO, this series tells the story of a curious knight and his young squire. Chronologically, it takes place years before Game of Thrones, but after the events of House of the Dragon. It is, so to speak, a middle ground between the two series that have had such an impact on us (even though most people didn't like the ending of the original series).
One of the hallmarks of this universe is its rawness: explicit violence, betrayals, lots of blood, and, if you will, lots of gore. This was very evident in the early seasons of Game of Thrones, and although it was diluted at times, violence was always present. In House of the Dragon, the emphasis on showing constant blood and lacerations has diminished somewhat, but it remains a fundamental element that speaks to the cruelty of that world.
However, after watching the first three episodes of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” I notice something completely different. Although we will surely see blood or some graphic details later on, the series feels much lighter. Personally, I think it has been quite well received; after being accustomed to dark, gloomy stories full of betrayal, seeing something so fresh is gratifying.
For now, it doesn't look like we're going to see a deadly family feud for power. Instead, we have the story of Duncan the Tall, a commoner trying to become a knight, and his young squire, who is full of surprises. I won't go into details so you can discover it for yourselves, especially if you haven't read George R.R. Martin's novels.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms | Official Final Trailer
What I saw at the end of episode three was very satisfying and raises high expectations. We know that it may not be a story of massive political significance, but it has a lot to contribute to the expanded universe. I really like what I've seen so far, and after watching the next three episodes, I'll be back to share my impressions.
