The new adaptation of Wuthering Heights, directed by Emerald Fennell, has attracted a great deal of attention and criticism regarding the true story as told in the famous book written by the novelist Emily Brontë. I haven’t read the book and didn’t know much about the story other than that it is very famous and that many people have read it. What caught my attention was that I’d heard this film didn’t do the story justice, and although it isn’t the first film to be made of this story—as there are other adaptations too—I was very curious to see it and draw my own conclusions.
La nueva adaptación de Cumbres Borrascosas dirigida por Emerald Fennell, ha ganado notoriedad y muchas críticas en cuánto a la historia real que se conoce por medio del famoso libro escrito por la novelista Emily Brontë. No tengo conocimientos del libro y tampoco sabía mucho de la historia más que es muy famosa y que muchas personas han leído el libro. Lo que me llamó la atención es que había escuchado que está película no le hizo justicia a la historia, y aunque no es la primera película que se ha hecho de esta historia, ya que existe también otras adaptaciones. Esta en si, tenía mucha curiosidad de verla y de sacar mis propias conclusiones.
The story takes us to a place called Wuthering Heights, where Mr Earnshaw is a man of a cold disposition who treats people in a deeply humiliating manner, particularly those he knows who are of lower social standing than himself. He has a daughter named Catherine, a free spirit whose outlook on life differs somewhat from her father’s. One day, things in their household change with the arrival of a boy named Heathcliff, who has no parents and little formal education. A rather tense atmosphere develops between Heathcliff and Earnshaw, as the latter abuses his power to treat Heathcliff almost like a slave, forcing him to do hard labour and humiliating him in the worst possible ways.
But things are different between Catherine and Heathcliff; as children, they have fun, spend a lot of time together, and one can even sense the affection Heathcliff feels for Catherine, as if he always wanted to protect and look after her, even from her own father. As the years go by, Catherine grows up and things begin to feel different; they no longer see each other as the children they once were. But for Catherine, Heathcliff can be nothing more than her brother or a member of her family; besides, he has nothing to offer her. The things she desires, such as money and status, she will never find in someone like Heathcliff.
La historia nos lleva al lugar llamado Cumbres Borrascosas, donde Earnshaw es un hombre que tiene un carácter frío y es muy humillante su manera de tratar a las personas, sobre todo a quienes conoce y son de menos estatus que él. El tiene una hija llamada Catherine quien es de espíritu libre, que tiene una forma de ver la vida un poco diferente a la de su padre. Un día las cosas dentro de su hogar cambian con la llegada de un niño llamado Heathcliff quien no tiene padres y que además tiene pocos conocimientos en cuanto a estudios. Se crea una atmósfera bastante irritable entre Earnshaw, ya que este abusa de su poder para hacer que Heathcliff sea casi como su esclavo, haciéndole hacer trabajos forzados e incluso humillandolo de las peores formas.
Pero entre Catherine y Heathcliff las cosas son diferentes, ambos siendo niños se divierten, pasan mucho tiempo juntos e incluso se siente el cariño que le tiene Heathcliff a Catherine, como si siempre quisiera protegerla y cuidarla incluso de su propio padre. Things become difficult between the two of them; Catherine then meets Edgar Linton, who is a man of great wealth and exactly the sort of husband she had always imagined herself having. Not only would he help her escape the place where she grew up, but she would discover new horizons beyond the difficult life she led with her father, Earnshaw, who, the older he gets, the worse he becomes—worse even than she can remember. Between gambling and alcohol, he is a miserable, detestable man she does not wish to see, yet he is still her father, and it is for his sake that she decides to marry, even though she knows she does not feel great affection for Edgar Linton—at least not as much as she feels for Heathcliff. But this could not be, not after she had already accepted her engagement and Heathcliff had disappeared for a long time.
As I’m not thoroughly familiar with the story, I couldn’t say it’s the worst film I’ve ever seen; I suppose the book is much better than the film, and perhaps another adaptation might have been better than this one. However, I don’t think it’s as bad as people say. I felt the story was well portrayed, set in a location that captures the era and all the events surrounding the story of Wuthering Heights. I didn’t think the casting was bad either; some say it was the worst decision, perhaps because both Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie come from films where they play very different characters, and they didn’t quite fit the bill in a story so beloved by people.
Las cosas se vuelven difíciles entre ambos, Catherine conoce luego a Edgar Linton quien posee una gran fortuna y es la persona que ella siempre había pensado en tener como esposo. No solo la ayudaría a salir del lugar en el que creció, sino que conocería otros horizontes más allá de la vida tan difícil con su padre Earnshaw, quien mientras más viejo se vuelve se convierte en un ser incluso peor de lo que puede recordar, entre apuestas y alcohol es un ser miserable y detestable que no desea ver, pero que aún así es su padre y por el que también tomara la decisión de casarse aunque sabe que no siente un gran afecto por Edgar Linton, al menos no como lo que siente hacia Heathcliff, pero esto no podría ser, no después de que ya había aceptado su compromiso y que Heathcliff desapareciera por un largo tiempo.
Al no conocer a fondo la historia no podría decir que es lo peor que he visto en el cine, supongo que el libro es mucho mejor que la película y tal vez otra adaptación pudo haber sido mejor que está. Sin embargo, no creo que sea tan mala como la gente dice. Me pareció que la historia fue bien descrita, ambientada en un lugar que muestra la época y todas las cosas que sucedian alrededor de la historia de Cumbres Borrascosas. También la selección de los actores no me pareció mala, algunos dicen que fue la peor decisión tal vez porque tanto Jacob Elordi como Margot Robbie vienen de películas donde interpretan diferentes personajes y no quedaban como tal en una historia tan querida por las personas.
But you have to give them credit for doing a good job; they had great chemistry and you can tell they enjoyed making this film. The story isn’t just about a love that can’t be or that’s impossible; it also speaks of the decisions people make, which can be as rewarding as they are devastating for the protagonists’ lives. I loved that they were both the leads; I didn’t expect them to have such great chemistry or to carry the story so well. I feel it remains faithful to the original story, but as I said, I haven’t read the book and there are likely to be many differences between it and the film.
I like stories with a bit of a rocky romance, perhaps ones with plenty of drama, and although the ending did take me by surprise because I wasn’t familiar with the story, I felt there was a very strong connection between the two characters. It was as if they were soulmates and had always been destined to be together. Looking at it from a romantic perspective, it also touches on the themes of betrayal, desire and death, which is the film’s climax, but I did enjoy the film even though it was a bit long; I think that was necessary to tell the story as well as possible, and I’d like to read the book at some point and also watch another adaptation to see what differences there are between this one and the others. But what did you think? I liked it; I really do enjoy some of the performances by both actors in other productions, which is perhaps why I liked seeing them together. Pero si hay que valorar que hicieron un buen trabajo, tuvieron mucha química incluso se ve que disfrutaron de hacer esta película. La historia no es solo de un amor que no puede ser o que es imposible, también habla de aquellas decisiones que se toman y que pueden ser tan gratificantes como devastadoras para la vida de los protagonistas. Yo amé que ambos fueran los protagonistas, no pensé que tuvieran tan buena química y que se desenvolvieran tan bien en la historia. Siento que se mantiene el respeto de la historia original, pero como dije, no he leído el libro y es probable que existan muchas diferencias entre el y la película.
Me gustan las historias que tienen un poco de romance dificultoso, tal vez donde exista mucho drama y aunque si que me impactó el final porque no conocía la historia, siento que había una conexión muy fuerte entre ambos personajes. Era como si fuesen almas gemelas y hubieran estado siempre destinados a estar juntos. Viéndolo desde el lado del romanticismo, también toca el tema de la traición, el deseo, la muerte que es el punto más álgido de la película, pero si que disfrute la película aunque fue un tanto extensa, creo que fue necesario para contar lo mejor posible la historia y me gustaría poder en algún momento leer el libro y también ver otra de las adaptaciones para ver qué diferencias hay entre está y las demás. Pero, ¿Que les pareció? A mi me gustó, realmente si disfruto de algunas de las actuaciones de ambos actores en otras producciones, tal vez por eso me gustó la unión de ambos.
