Dime que comes y sabré que tan loco eres... "Fresh"
Desde hace días quiero tomar una semana para realizar reseñas de películas de terror y suspenso, por eso pensé en tres films de los cuales dos fueron estrenados en este año y otro que a pesar de ser del año pasado, en la actualidad tendrá estreno en algunos países; quería esperar hasta octubre que es cuando me enfocó en realizar únicamente reseñas de este género, pero la curiosidad hizo que me decidiera al ver estas tres películas, si más nada que decir aquí les dejo el primero de estas tres reseñas de películas de terror.

For days I want to take a week to review horror and suspense movies, so I thought of three films of which two were released this year and another that despite being last year, currently will be released in some countries; I wanted to wait until October which is when I focused on making only reviews of this genre, but curiosity made me decide to see these three films, if nothing else to say here I leave the first of these three reviews of horror movies.
"Fresh" nos relata la historia de "Noa", ella es una hermosa y joven mujer con algunas dificultades para tener relaciones amorosas, ella cree que en diferentes APPS de citas podrá conseguir una estable pareja aunque ella no siente esa necesidad y todo es debido al apoyo o presión de su mejor amiga quien la empuja a tener citas sin importar que tan desastrosas pueden ser, mientras está decepcionada por su situación amorosa, de forma inesperada conoce al atractivo Steve, alguien perfecto porque es soltero, doctor cirujano, adinerado y que siente una atracción especial por ella; de forma inmediata tendrán una hermosa relación y cuando están listos para dar un nuevo paso, Steve la sorprenderá con una terrorífica verdad, una muy unida a sus gustos culinarios y del grupo al que él pertenece.
"Fresh" tells us the story of "Noa", she is a beautiful and young woman with some difficulties to have love relationships, she believes that in different dating APPS she will be able to get a stable partner although she does not feel that need and everything is due to the support or pressure of her best friend who pushes her to have dates no matter how disastrous they can be, while she is disappointed by her love situation, unexpectedly she meets the attractive Steve, someone perfect because he is single, surgeon doctor, wealthy and who feels a special attraction for her; They immediately have a beautiful relationship and when they are ready to take a new step, Steve will surprise her with a terrifying truth, one that is very close to her culinary tastes and the group he belongs to.
Este film tuvo una premier en el Sundance Festival en enero pasado y por las buenas críticas recibidas, Searchlight Pictures se hizo con los derechos de distribución, pero solamente en países del Reino Unido tuvo un estreno en las salas de cine, en otras partes del mundo se vio vía streaming por Hulu, Star+ y Disney+ desde el mes marzo. La dirección estuvo a cargo de Mimi Cave quien con este film hace su debut como directora en un largometraje; sus anteriores trabajos están relacionados con cortos films y videos musicales siendo estos justamente los que creo que influyen en muchas de las escenas de este trabajo, por ejemplo Cave realiza buenas tomas que pienso que pueden ser confortables para el espectador, también crea momentos de tensión para después resolverlas de forma simple y aliviar tanto al personaje principal como a la persona que está viendo la película, justamente en eso me enfoco en su trabajo porque pienso que traslada al espectador a una zona de confort y convierte los primeros 30 minutos o más en una simple comedia romántica, eso lo hace mostrando clásicas tomas de dos personajes conociéndose, enamorándose y eso algo muy bien hecho; disfrute de esas tomas simples en un bar o en una habitación porque fortalecen la relación y refuerza esa etapa perfecta en una relación que está comenzando, eso para después cuando existe una plena confianza mostrar la verdadera cara de cada uno de los involucrados, a pesar de esto que puede considerarse muy serio, pienso que está directora crea un gran balance en varios momentos del film realizando otro tipo de escenas que considero mis favoritas en dónde le da mucha importancia a la música y al baile y aquí repetiré que la experiencia de Cave al realizar videos musicales es notable en este tipo de escenas; existen otras tomas que pueden perturbar al espectador aunque siendo sincero son simples, sencillas y pienso que hasta son perfectas para esta película y el tipo de historia, yo esperaba que fueran más gráficas e impactantes, pero encontré reconfortante de que no siguieran un camino exagerado y sobreactuado aunque consideré que debió crear mejores escenas de terror.
El guion escrito por Lauryn Kahn no es muy original; inmediatamente se le puede comparar con otras películas o series de TV como Hannibal, Get Out y Hostal, también con otras historias dónde sus tramas estén envueltos sectas, pero a pesar de eso hay cosas que son muy buenas como por ejemplo en un principio la historia de Noa y de cómo es que se relaciona con alguien como Steve, el desarrollo de cómo se conocen y tienen una relación envuelta en el apetito de otros es lo que más me ha gustado porque está historia es algo más que un secuestro y maltrato a una persona; es muy claro que el tema principal de este film es las apariencias que pueden mostrar alguien cuando se están conociendo, los secretos, la vulnerabilidad y el peligro de confiar en personas de una forma tan rápida, a esto le sumo lo difícil que es para alguien poder salir de una relación sabiendo que es nociva, peligrosa y mortal, convivir con alguien que tiene un gran poder de manipulación y que desde su locura sembrará en una víctima de que no existe esperanza, en eso creo que está el verdadero terror y no tanto en mostrar escenas gráficas de violencia y tortura, eso es lo que rescato del guion creado por Khan que más que feminista, lo tomo como una historia universal que cualquiera puede caer en situaciones algo parecidas a lo que realmente se cuenta en este film.
This film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last January and due to the good reviews received, Searchlight Pictures acquired the distribution rights, but only in the United Kingdom it had a theatrical release, in other parts of the world it was seen via streaming on Hulu, Star+ and Disney+ since March. It was directed by Mimi Cave who with this film makes her directorial debut in a feature film; her previous works are related to short films and music videos which I believe influence many of the scenes in this work, for example Cave makes good shots that I think can be comfortable for the viewer, she also creates moments of tension and then resolves them in a simple way to relieve both the main character and the person watching the film, that's exactly what I focus on in his work because I think he takes the viewer into a comfort zone and turns the first 30 minutes or so into a simple romantic comedy, he does that by showing classic shots of two characters getting to know each other, falling in love and that's something very well done; enjoy those simple shots in a bar or in a room because it strengthens the relationship and reinforces that perfect stage in a relationship that is beginning, that for later when there is a full confidence show the true face of each of the involved, despite this that can be considered very serious, I think this director creates a great balance in several moments of the film making another type of scenes that I consider my favorite where she gives much importance to the music and dance and here I will repeat that the experience of Cave when making music videos is remarkable in this type of scenes; there are other shots that may disturb the viewer although being honest they are simple, straightforward and I think they are even perfect for this film and the type of story, I expected them to be more graphic and shocking, but I found it comforting that they did not follow an exaggerated and overacted path although I considered that he should have created better horror scenes.
The script written by Lauryn Kahn is not very original; immediately it can be compared with other movies or TV series like Hannibal, Get Out and Hostel, also with other stories where their plots involve cults, but despite that there are things that are very good as for example in the beginning the story of Noa and how she relates to someone like Steve, the development of how they meet and have a relationship involved in the appetite of others is what I liked the most because this story is something more than a kidnapping and abuse of a person; it is very clear that the main theme of this film is the appearances that someone can show when they are getting to know each other, the secrets, the vulnerability and the danger of trusting people so quickly, to this I add how difficult it is for someone to get out of a relationship knowing that it is harmful, dangerous and deadly, I think that's where the real terror lies and not so much in showing graphic scenes of violence and torture, that's what I rescue from the script created by Khan that more than feminist, I take it as a universal story that anyone can fall into situations somewhat similar to what is really told in this film.
Las actuaciones tanto de Daisy Edgar-Jones y Sebastian Stan son un punto alto en el film; la interpretación de Daisy como la dulce, inocente y vulnerable Noa me ha gustado mucho, hace un papel creíble porque es alguien que teme relacionarse con otras personas y justamente son esas características lo que la hace ver cómo una posible víctima ante la mirada de Steve personaje interpretado por Stan quien tiene todo a favor para engañar a Noa y otras mujeres más; el trabajo de este actor es bueno, me gusta el estilo de este personaje confiado, tranquilo, divertido y a la vez completamente loco aunque sin ser exagerado y eso es lo mejor de su actuación; estás características de ambos personajes se complementan por la gran química que existe entre estos dos actores, las escenas que comparten en dónde se nota la confianza y vulnerabilidad es lo mejor y eso hace que resalten en esta historia, no hay duda que los dos se divirtieron mucho en esta película y eso lo reflejan en las muchas escenas que comparten.
The performances of both Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan are a high point in the film; the interpretation of Daisy as the sweet, innocent and vulnerable Noa I liked a lot, she plays a credible role because she is someone who is afraid to relate to other people and it is precisely these characteristics what makes her look like a possible victim in the eyes of Steve character played by Stan who has everything in favor to deceive Noa and other women; the work of this actor is good, I like the style of this character confident, calm, funny and at the same time completely crazy but without being exaggerated and that is the best of his performance; these characteristics of both characters are complemented by the great chemistry that exists between these two actors, the scenes they share where trust and vulnerability is the best and that makes them stand out in this story, there is no doubt that the two had a lot of fun in this movie and that is reflected in the many scenes they share.
Fresh me entretuvo y me gustó, pienso en tres factores que me hicieron disfrutar esta película; primero el pensar en este film como una historia en dónde una mujer debe liberarse de una prisión creada por una relación tóxica, manipuladora, peligrosa, no hay duda que eso me hizo disfrutarla aún más porque considero muy inteligente el usar una historia extraña de terror para relatar algo verdadero que sucede en algunas relaciones; segundo, no tenía ninguna expectativa sobre esta historia y eso lo considero muy importante porque este es un pequeño film bien dirigido, actuado aunque con un guion nada perfecto, pero como ya he dicho, la química entre sus protagonistas, sus actuaciones hacen que sea aceptable y a la vez un film divertido y seguramente si esperaba algo más seguro me sentiría decepcionado; por último, pienso que al ser un simple film, con una historia bien desarrollada es lo que hace que la considere una buena película y a pesar de que se puede descarrilar al tratar de hacerla algo más, me pareció una buena decisión que sea hasta el final para enseñar algo diferente, algo que cambie la historia y la haga pensar en ser el comienzo de una franquicia; aparte de todo eso, me quedo con que está película es un claro reflejo de las presiones que nos da la sociedad para conseguir una pareja, los problemas de tener una relación con alguien con el poder de manipular, de cuidarse de las apariencias, de no ser vulnerables o de no demostrar que son vulnerables; por estos peligros que pueden enfrentar muchas personas en especial mujeres es que me ha gustado porque como ya he dicho, está situaciones lejos de un rapto, secuestro y tortura, sé que habrá muchas mujeres que puedan tener una situación igual siendo víctimas de parejas que las engañarán mostrando una máscara que oculta secretos aterradores y es ahí en dónde este film de terror y suspenso cumple con su cometido.
Fresh entertained me and I liked it, I think in three factors that made me enjoy this film; first, thinking of this film as a story where a woman must free herself from a prison created by a toxic, manipulative, dangerous relationship, there is no doubt that made me enjoy it even more because I consider very intelligent to use a strange horror story to tell something true that happens in some relationships; second, I didn't have any expectations about this story and I consider that very important because this is a little film well directed, acted although with a not perfect script, but as I said, the chemistry between its main characters, their performances make it acceptable and at the same time a funny film and surely if I expected something more I would be disappointed; finally, I think that being a simple film, with a well developed story is what makes me consider it a good film and even though it can be derailed by trying to make it something more, I thought it was a good decision that it is until the end to show something different, something that changes the story and makes it think of being the beginning of a franchise; apart from all that, I keep that this film is a clear reflection of the pressures that society gives us to get a partner, the problems of having a relationship with someone with the power to manipulate, to take care of appearances, not to be vulnerable or not to show that they are vulnerable; because of these dangers that many people can face, especially women, is why I liked it because as I said, it is far from a kidnapping, abduction and torture, I know that there will be many women who may have a similar situation being victims of partners who will deceive them showing a mask that hides terrifying secrets and that is where this film of terror and suspense fulfills its objective.
