Ser adolescente en los 90' me hizo descubrir un estilo musical el cual nunca dejaré de escuchar, esa época fue especial por toda la variedad musical que existía dentro de un mismo género; fui descubriendo numerosas bandas y artistas mientras al escuchar la radio o al ver MTV, siempre era escuchar un tema musical o varios de diferentes bandas que siempre se me hacía difícil responder a la pregunta "¿Cuál es tu banda favorita?" El tiempo ha pasado y muchos de esos álbumes realizados por grandes músicos cumplen 25 años o más y al volver a escucharlos es imposible no sentir nostalgia por grandes momentos vividos, está es la razón por la cual al ver hace unos días este documental, la nostalgia, los buenos recuerdos aparecieron y me dieron ganas de escribir sobre este documental que resume la vida artística de Alanis Morissette y el álbum de 1995 "Jagged Little Pill".

Being a teenager in the 90' made me discover a musical style which I will never stop listening to, that time was special because of all the musical variety that existed within the same genre; I was discovering numerous bands and artists while listening to the radio or watching MTV, it was always listening to a musical theme or several of different bands that always made me difficult to answer the question "What is your favorite band?"Time has passed and many of those albums made by great musicians are 25 years old or more and when listening to them again it is impossible not to feel nostalgia for great moments lived, this is the reason why when I saw a few days ago this documentary, nostalgia, good memories appeared and made me want to write about this documentary that summarizes the artistic life of Alanis Morissette and the 1995 album "Jagged Little Pill".
Siendo completamente sincero, no soy un fiel seguidor de Alanis, su gran éxito musical "You Oughta Know" primer sencillo de este gran álbum, creo que trataba de evitar escucharlo, no era tanto porque no me gustaba sino porque sonaba en todos lados, en la radio era obligatorio escuchar esa canción y ver el vídeo en los diferentes canales de videos musicales que existían en esa época; cosa contraria sucedió con su segundo sencillo "Hand in My Pocket" el cual es la canción que más me gusta de esta artista, tiene la melodía y letra perfecta y hasta podemos disfrutar mucho más de la voz de Alanis.
Being completely honest, I am not a loyal fan of Alanis, her great musical hit "You Oughta Know" first single of this great album, I think I tried to avoid listening to it, it wasn't so much because I didn't like it but because it was played everywhere, on the radio it was mandatory to listen to that song and watch the video on the different music video channels that existed at that time; The opposite happened with her second single "Hand in My Pocket" which is the song I like the most of this artist, it has the perfect melody and lyrics and we can even enjoy much more the voice of Alanis.
Sé que pensaran si no soy un fiel fan de esta cantante ¿Por qué reseñó este documental? Para mí toda esta historia es un nuevo descubrimiento de la música que hizo Morissette, tenía conocimiento de algunas cosas de su pasado como artista pop en Canadá, pero no sabía que tan influyente e importante era, tanto así que también fue conocida en USA, eso me sorprendió en su historia porque antes de llegar a lo importante de este documental que se refleja en un álbum que salió a la venta en 1995, era justo que se contará un origen de la artista y lo que pudo ocasionar que escribiera tan buenas canciones.
El tener relatos de amistades, en imágenes de sus comienzos y el relato de la protagonista de esta historia es lo mejor para saber aún más de ella, creo que es algo inteligente porque una nueva generación puede ver y hasta creo que entender por qué ella decidió escribir no solo las canciones de ese álbum sino de todos los demás que sacó en los años subsiguientes; la vida de artista juvenil le hizo madurar de forma rápida, de ver el mundo de manera diferente de tener metas inmediatas para que siguiera sintiéndose como una artista y creo que tuvo la suerte de conseguir a las personas indicadas que la apoyaron, la protegieron para dar un gran salto a un estrellato mundial.
I know you will think if I am not a loyal fan of this singer why did you review this documentary? For me this whole story is a new discovery of the music that made Morissette, I had knowledge of some things of her past as a pop artist in Canada, but I did not know how influential and important she was, so much so that she was also known in USA, that surprised me in her story because before getting to the important of this documentary that is reflected in an album that was released in 1995, it was fair that an origin of the artist will be told and what could cause her to write such good songs.
Having tales of friendships, in pictures of her beginnings and the narration of the protagonist of this story is the best thing to know even more about her, I think it is a smart thing to do because a new generation can see and even I think understand why she decided to write not only the songs of that album but of all the others she released in the subsequent years; life as a young artist made her mature quickly, to see the world differently, to have immediate goals so that she continued to feel like an artist and I think she was lucky enough to get the right people who supported her, protected her to make a big leap to worldwide stardom.
Me gustó que se le diera mucha importancia a la banda que acompañó a Alanis en toda la gira, pienso que después de su primer y segundo sencillo, la banda se hizo igual de famosa, en dónde resaltaba Taylor Hawkins que después pasaría a ser integrante de Foo Fighters, el relato de ellos junto a productores, gente que trabajó en la radio, creo que todo ellos dan importancia a todo el éxito de este álbum, al impacto importante que tuvo en la Generación X, en ser la voz para muchas mujeres jóvenes y también en hombres, eso me sorprendió en ver cuándo transmiten las presentaciones en vivo y en primera fila hay hombres cantando canciones, que por si no considero feministas, sino que tienen un mensaje mundial, un mensaje para todos sin restricciones y que tal vez al tener un mensajero mujer se pueda sentir rechazo porque en esa época como se dice en el documental, el machismo en varios ámbitos de la música, era algo evidente, pero a pesar de todo eso Alanis Morissette prevaleció haciéndose importante en el mundo de la música.
I liked that a lot of importance was given to the band that accompanied Alanis throughout the tour, I think that after their first and second singles, the band became just as famous, where Taylor Hawkins, who later became a member of Foo Fighters, stood out, the story of them along with producers, people who worked in radio, I think all of them give importance to all the success of this album, the important impact it had on Generation X, in being the voice for many young women and also in men, I was surprised to see when they broadcast the live presentations and in the front row there are men singing songs, which I don't consider feminist, but that they have a global message, a message for everyone without restrictions and that perhaps having a female messenger can feel rejected because at that time as it is said in the documentary, machismo in various areas of music was evident, but despite all that Alanis Morissette prevailed and became important in the world of music.
A pesar de que este documental no fue bien recibido por la misma Alanis la cual acusa de que está historia no es la que ella pensó que sería, en dónde expresó que estuvo hasta 5 horas de entrevista y por supuesto no está todo lo que ella quiso contar, sin embargo, más que nada que se usó frases e historias que seguramente no quería que salieran a la opinión pública y a esto le sumo declaraciones de su publicista el cual indica que Alanis accedió a dar está entrevista después de padecer depresión postparto de su tercer embarazo y se aprovechó de ese momento de vulnerabilidad de la artista; a pesar de todo lo antes descrito puedo decir que disfrute del documental, más que nada de las imágenes, de todas esas grabaciones mientras Alanis estaba de gira, contar la historia de cómo y porque se escribieron tan buenas canciones, ver a un artista hacer bien su trabajo, de llevar alegría, una nueva opinión, porque no, un mensaje para quien necesitaba escuchar en un tiempo en donde se necesitaba de alguien nuevo y fresco. Como dije en un principio, este documental me hizo volver a descubrir a esta cantante, me hizo volver a escuchar este álbum que por mucho tiempo pensé que era el primer de esta artista y si por casualidad no lo ha escuchado lo invito a hacerlo, recomendó la versión en dónde se celebra el 25 aniversario de este álbum en Spotify, ya que existen versiones en vivo de varios de estos grandes temas, en especial la versión acústica de "Hand in My Pocket" que sorpresivamente no está en el Unplugged que hizo en 1999, este documental lo pueden ver en HBO en la serie llamada "Music Box".
Although this documentary was not well received by the same Alanis which accuses that this story is not what she thought it would be, where she said that she was up to 5 hours of interview and of course there is not everything she wanted to tell, however, more than anything else that she used phrases and stories that she surely did not want to go out to the public opinion and to this I add statements from her publicist which indicates that Alanis agreed to give this interview after suffering from postpartum depression of her third pregnancy and took advantage of that moment of vulnerability of the artist; in spite of everything described above, I can say that I enjoyed the documentary, more than anything else the images, all those recordings while Alanis was on tour, telling the story of how and why such good songs were written, seeing an artist doing his job well, bringing joy, a new opinion, why not, a message for those who needed to listen at a time when someone new and fresh was needed. As I said in the beginning, this documentary made me rediscover this singer, it made me listen again to this album that for a long time I thought it was the first of this artist and if by chance you have not heard it I invite you to do so, recommended the version where the 25th anniversary of this album is celebrated on Spotify, There are live versions of several of these great songs, especially the acoustic version of "Hand in My Pocket" which surprisingly is not in the Unplugged she did in 1999, this documentary can be seen on HBO in the series called "Music Box".
