Hello Hivers, we are in the second week of the fifth edition of "League of Movies" created by , this week the publication we must do is about "Into the Dark", let me explain, we must do a review about movies that have a dark atmosphere, Shadow stories that have controversy and that have given you goose bumps, as I have always said in the world of cinema there is material for everything and that is why this week I invite
and
, to participate you must follow the rules in the following link League of Movies
"if you're seeing me, you're having the worst day of your life..."
When I read this week's topic I thought about not going for the usual horror movie and if more for a thriller film, although believe me that following the advice of , I looked for a story away from both types and I can say that I found it, but from the beginning I only thought about making a review where people could live scary situations without it being catalogued as a horror movie, I immediately thought of Prisoners, Enemy and Nightcrawler, for me in these three films they show characters that go to a dark side or show how comfortable they are in that place, but the best thing is that each of their stories are about controversial topics that may or may not happen to us in real life, they show the loss of identity or what they really are, but precisely the last film is the one that impressed me the most and in my opinion it fits very well in the topic to be discussed.
"Nightcrawler" is an excellent film, a story of a man who gets the motivation to face his lonely life, a motivation that will lead him to get something as simple as a job, one of which uses other people's tragedy to get paid and that makes him finally fit in a world which has closed the doors for his strange way of being, But this is not only what the film is about, but also the use of information and how it is shown to people who consume this kind of news, use a scary character feeling like a "fish in water" in a world where the terrifying makes the ratings go up.
This film was the directorial debut of Dan Gilroy, who has always remained a scriptwriter. In this film he plays a double role and for me his vision of the city of Los Angeles is essential, as well as that of the main character of this story, show a quiet city from its main streets and bus stations, but just after the appearance of our protagonist everything is focused on him and the dangerous part of the city, the director stops showing his fascination for the city and focuses on the annoying face of the real narrator of this story, that seems to me very good and is the main criticism where the bad thing of a place is done by the people, not the city.
The screenplay is the best, each dialogue done is seen to be very well written, I like the story to show that there are night people who seem to be always prone to some danger and that despite the lighting of the city, there will always be dark areas where things happen that few can see and that's where characters like "vampires" come in who only come out at night willing to inform others that they don't experience,Gilroy**_ as a screenwriter has created a story where there are people who do a horrible job, but there are others who like to see that work, it is something that speaks very badly of the society where there are those who like images of horror and tragedy, but never expect them to happen to them.
Of the three movies that they wanted to review with this week's theme, they have a common factor and that is that in all of them Jake Gyllenhaal has a main role, in one I can consider him as the light at the end of the tunnel, in the other he is walking a slow and strange path into the darkness, but in this one he is someone who is already in a dark place, but it is a small and closed place where he cannot show himself as he is, when he finds that place he fits in so well that he looks like he has the power and he won't let anyone take him out of that place, a person with mental problems, but somehow is intelligent and uses all that to focus and motivate himself in a world where the "graphic" sells and he knows he lives in a city where he can get the material necessary to finally be someone important, the work of this actor is impressive, from the way he talks, his annoying gestures, as he has that arrogance and false humility to say the dialogues in a great way leaving very good phrases that could be used at any time, for me is one of the best work of this actor in his career.
This is a film which its director catalogues as a thriller, but many critics think that this film fits into the genre of black comedy, drama and even horror, for me it shows each of these genres, there is the drama of a man finding his place in the world, the horror that he does not care what kind of tragedy he sells just to fulfill his dreams, black humor in how every situation is a criticism of society, for example it is not fun to see a tragedy when it happens to you, But I will tell you that his story is terrifying, in the world we can find people who do not know what their true intentions are, people who loneliness makes them dream and want the life that others have full of wealth and power and having the necessary motivation will do their best to achieve their goals, but what terrifies me is that this type of person handles information, I have always believed that information is power, but I also wonder who handles that information? Who decides what to see and what to read? This film shows a dark part not only of a man or a city, it shows the darkness of a society hungry for images of pain and suffering no matter where it comes from, that makes me think if one day we will be in some of those videos or we will be victims of the dreams of a crazy person.
