We arrived at the end of the fifth edition of League of Movies, this fourth week the theme which our reviews should focus on is action movies that are very explosive and loud, this week is "Kaboom!" Unfortunately for being very close to the end I can not invite new participants for the end of this edition, but I can invite them for the next edition, that's why and
to join the league, just follow the rules in the next linkLeague of Movies.
"I WANT TO EXPLODE EVERYTHING!..."
Immediately when I read this week's topic, I just wondered "Which of Michael Bay's movies am I going to review?" I'm not a fan of Mr. Bay, but that doesn't mean that I don't recognize that he is one of the directors with the most explosive movies I've seen, he doesn't hesitate to blow up anything to create an action sequence worthy of seeing in the theater, there were many options, Bad Boys 1 and 2, The Rock, Armageddon or the many films of the Transformers, but I decided for one I had not seen, a high budget film had a premiere on Netflix last December and despite getting harsh reviews has become the original film of this streaming company with more views.
"6 Underground" is an excessive action film, a very funny film that does not seek to create a debate regarding the story we are told, the debate is in which of its many action sequences is better, although many critics destroyed the film, personally I had fun watching it, I know the work of the director and his protagonist so I knew I was going to see and so he was able to enjoy the two hours of the film. Their story is simple, a team of "6 ghosts" who seek to bring order to the world by eliminating everything that is wrong, this time we see their first mission as a group in which their objective is a dictator who does not care about anyone's life and even less about that of his brother who he uses as an object to maintain a good international image, but still is a high threat to stay in power.
As I said, I'm not a fan of Michael Bay, but I've seen a lot of his films, what doesn't make me a fan is that I don't like the scripts he uses as a basis for his work, I always think his contracts are like "Give me something to exploit", can be a romantic story, a children's story, a family drama and this director will always find the moment to make a brutal chase where everything happens and this time is not the exception although the script written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, who have a great and successful journey since they worked together in the script of Zombieland (2009), this time they write a simple script with a simple story, a group of misfits who seek to do good when somehow they did evil or suffered from evil, people who do not get justice and is where a man appears who will give them freedom to help the world, in the end this simple story is an excuse for Bay, to show what he does best and for me it is perfect.
In this film, the main character talks about freedom and for me it talks about the director, it is as if producers were told "Do the best you can do" and that is how it was, each action sequence is very well done, I think it is one of the best I have seen from this director, the best, the chase at the beginning is crazy, the sequences in Hong Kong, the end, are all very good, it is a film of heroes without super powers, with creativity and a lot of fantasy, I will give you as an example the scene of the chase that this director does in Bad Boys 2 I have always said that it is a nonsense, both for the story and as a scene in itself, this time it doesn't happen that way, it is not exploding for exploding's sake, everything is calculated and in spite of not stopping being fantasy, I think that is what this film wanted to do and I think that since films like The Rock, Bad Boys and the first one of Transformers, I didn't enjoy so much explosions every 5 minutes, great work of Michael Bay.
I don't want to extend myself with the part of the performances, they are all regular and nothing special, Ryan Reynolds does a performance that we are used to seeing and that is not bad, it is fun without being exaggerated and that serves because I think that the main problem of Reynolds, is that he can exhaust his way of working always showing the same, of the other actors do an equal job, those who must be redeemed, young people who are looking for something better because of the reward, all of them with somewhat scattered origins, but connected to make a better world, my favorite characters, "Two" played by Mélanie Laurent, "Three" played by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and "Four" played by Ben Hardy, all three have the best action scenes and fun, they are very good characters.
At the time of its premiere in December 2019, I wanted to see it and I only watched 25 minutes, I thought it would be bad and I stopped watching it, but in this time with very few summer movies, I can say that I filled my quota of explosions, shootings and chases, I had a great time, maybe it is not the taste of many people because of how violent it is, I think it is the most graphic film of Bay, but I say it again, it is the time that this director has a great freedom to do what he always does, Although his films may be good or not, I think his vision for action and images itself is excellent and the story is, is perfect for this director, is perfect for these actors and where it was released and is perfect for the theme of this week in League of Movies, if you have not seen and want to enjoy a film of unbridled action that does not stop, this is the film you were looking for, I will remind you again that is currently on Netflix.
