"Oh blond girls just wanna have fun..."
In the world of cinema there have been a great number of films where we can see women use their intelligence, strength and beauty (or not), to get and do what they want, but if there is an actress who has made great performances playing these types of characters, that's definitely Charlize Theron, who plays a serial killer in Monster or a futuristic rebel in Æon Flux and even a woman warrior in a post-apocalyptic world like "Imperator Furious" in Mad Max: Fury Road, just to name a few, but if there's one character that meets all the requirements of this week's theme, it's definitely Atomic Blonde.
This film is based on a graphic novel called "The Coldest City" created by Antony Johnston and Sam Hart, in the year 2012, both stories (film and comic) are starred by a woman spy, whose mission is to recover a list with the names and secrets of different spy agencies and discover who is the double agent that endangers the secret identities of many agents, All this happens in a city of Berlin divided by a wall and on the eve of its collapse, despite being set in the end of the "Cold War", they make it very clear that more than anything the mission of this agent is to cover up all the bad things done in those times using as a pretext to be serving the peace of some nation.
I have always believed that for a film to be successful it is necessary that the story is told or narrated from a clear point of view, it is fair that the story we hear captures our attention, that it has danger, action, beauty, sex and of course the classic final twist that will reveal the real danger, because this film has everything described and more when it is narrated by an excellent character like "Lorraine Broughton", an MI6 agent with the necessary experience to solve any case and it is clearly demonstrated as this story goes on.
Charlize Theron does a great job, I really liked how she played this character, her performance is excellent and I don't just want to focus on her fight scenes which are many and very well choreographed, this character has an excellent attitude where she knows she is so well prepared that she is always one step ahead of her enemies and allies, She has an excellent attitude, beauty and intelligence, everything in her favor to face any problem, everything in her favor to complete her mission and that is that everything that characterizes this character is very difficult not to associate it with this actress and that you see the naturalness and comfort that she is in each of the scenes, it is the best thing of the film.
This story shows the end of many things, the end of the division of Germany, the end of the Cold War and the end of the 80's. It is a great visual and musical tribute to that specific time, its director makes a lot of emphasis on showing the mostly female fashion of that time and the use of colors and neon, But we see how this image of the intelligent, strong woman who doesn't give up being sexy and who can achieve whatever she wants, is something I liked very much, it's an excellent story of someone who is determined to end something and to be at a higher level than the many men who think they have the power to be above it all.
Every time I have the opportunity to see this film I wonder why it did not perform better in theaters, I think it is one of the best action films I've seen, there are good performances, excellent spy story, has the necessary intrigue without becoming heavy or slow and may think it has flaws, but in this film we are listening to a story of someone who just control the way they tell their story but must accept that having only one point of view in their narration, lends itself to believe or not what they are telling us and that is very good because as I said before, we have a beautiful woman telling her experience in a dangerous city full of sex, intrigue and troubles, all this story is told in a room full of men who surely wanted to be in that situation, it is an excellent way to manipulate retrograde minds just by saying something with the attitude and sensuality necessary for everyone to believe that story, now I ask, Isn't this showing a woman's strengths? I think it is. For the moment we can only wait for the continuation of this film because David Leitch and Charlize Theron, will return for a sequel that will be exclusive to Netflix and if you want to see this great actress you can see her latest work "The Old Guard".
