Hi Hivers, we are already in the penultimate week of this third edition of "League of Movies" made by , in this opportunity the topic to discuss is "LOL (Laughing Out Loud)" this week we must make reviews of comic movies, the best you have seen and the one that has made you laugh more, This is not an easy topic, as it says Wiseagente but for the great amount of movies of this genre that exist, for sure you will have a lot of material to participate, that's why I invite you like every week to participate in this great league, remember to check the rules in the next Link
"Hi, do you have a minute to talk about Jim Carrey?..."
In the mid 90's in my hometown, one of the most famous video clubs of that time was opened, "Blockbuster", as a child I used to go with my brother and father and we would have a good time walking through the halls to see what we were going to see that weekend, one of the first movies we rented was just "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective", this film was chosen by my brother who never told us why he chose it since we didn't know the main actor and we didn't know what this story was about, it was so much of an unknown that on the way home I thought we had made a terrible choice and the only solution to whether we were wrong or not was to watch the film, so at that very moment we arrived at my house and immediately we played and we just had to wait to see how funny this film would be or not.
Ace Ventura is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, actually I think I've seen a few that are pretty funny like Airplane!, the trilogy of The Naked Gun, The Hangover and its sequel (the third one not), Superbad, There's Something About Mary, Me, Myself & Irene, Dumb and Dumber and others, I had a lot to choose from but I was in a week where I felt nostalgic for movies that meant a lot to me in my childhood and adolescence and I remembered that I had a long time not seeing that movie that meant the first starring role of Jim Carrey and I thought this was the perfect opportunity to review one of the funniest actors I've ever seen in my life.
First of all I want to say that I will start by giving my perspective of what I remember from the first time I saw this film, I think that always when we see a film from which we don't expect anything or that we don't have high expectations is the one that we can like very much (if the story is good) or not feel disappointed (if the story is bad), as I said before in my house we didn't have any knowledge of what Jim Carrey is capable of, That very visual humor, direct, without much respect, fast with much eloquence and even physical, this impressed me a lot, from the first moment I did not believe what I was seeing, it was the gestures of his face, voice, dialogues and each scene seemed to fill the screen giving all that could give this character, it was like watching Superman fly.
When I was young I focused on the jokes, the sense of humor and the strangeness of his character, I did not copy anything that this actor can do, because I thought it was impossible to make those gestures without looking completely ridiculous, or even say his lines and that weekend I think I have seen that movie up to five times and I tell you that my father does not like comedy movies, but with this film he was laughing all the time and even said that the performance of Carrey, reminded him of "The Three Stooges " and my brother and I agreed, for my part I always focus on the comedy scenes that in itself was the whole film, I think that's why I have it as one of my favorites and the best comedies I've seen.
It's been 26 years since the release of "Ace Ventura " and I think that this current moment we are living was perfect to make a comparison of that humor that made me laugh so much as a child at this time with so many changes and different opinions, mainly when I saw this film again I had a different feeling, I know what kind of acting, stories and comedy I'm going to see, but I still felt happy because I knew I was going to have a good time and not only that but remember good times, but the best thing about seeing it after so long was not only to see Jim's performance again, which is one of the best I've seen in his career, but the quality of the story that it is, I'm not saying it has a deep message or anything like that because this is a story of a detective acting like a secret agent, that's how simple this movie is and that's how easy it would be if it was made into a detective film version, with a background voice narrating step by step everything that is happening in the investigation, as it was done in The Naked Gun, perhaps it was not served by the simple base story and much less for this character which is the most important thing we will see on the scene. "Ace Ventura" as a character is very special, we have a great detective, animal lover, who is lucky with women and is very bold, I do not know if in the end this character is a satire of what is "James Bond" or those many characters in crime films where the protagonist is the typical macho man who does not accept any refusal as a response, either in the investigations that are made or in relation to women.
This film not only catapulted the success of Carrey, the director of this film also had a great career where several of his films were successful, Tom Shadyac, which with Ace Ventura, means his second time as a director, would make a great role not only making Carrey shine, but taking every perfect shot where the animals were involved, This was a small film and I think I make all the right decisions to make excellent shots for this film, but if there is something I must say that is the best, that was the script, this was written by the same Carrey, Shadyac and Jack Bernstein, this is an excellent detective story, if I know that everything is based on the theft of a dolphin and we must find out who stole it, but the three acts that make up this film regarding the investigation are very good, the first one is the presentation of its protagonist and the object or better said, the animal that has been stolen, the second act which is my favorite, is about the many suspects that exist and from here it gives us highly amusing and comical moments while the investigation goes on and the last and final act is where it is represented by the great turn of this story one that at the moment of seeing when it was a child and later a teenager, I laughed like crazy and even a specific image of Carrey I used to make jokes with my friends, but now as an adult I immediately thought "This would be no good at this time " and I do not know why but I did not feel the same desire to laugh as before, perhaps here I failed in the theme of this week, but it is what I perceive a "before and now" with respect to this film.
Despite the controversy and what unfortunately uses a specific theme in its end, I think it is unfair to classify this film and interpretation of Carrey as totally wrong, personally I did not know that there was a controversy for the different jokes they make and is that I think there are many films I've seen in my life that perhaps would not work in this current time, I can't excuse myself by saying that I was young and full of ignorance, nor do I say that when I saw some scenes again I didn't laugh because I still think the performance is excellent and I'm not only talking about Carrey but also about Sean Young, who plays a great comic role and gives us an excellent fight scene, but it's just so much fun and very well choreographed, The work of this actor was so great that even the sequel is overshadowed by what he did in his first leading role and even I think that's why he did not want to play that character again and I think it's good because for me he gave everything and I'll say it again because at this time some issues are untouchable, the other thing is for sure that the freedom that he had while making "Ace Ventura" would never have it again.
Even though there's only one week left in this third edition, this doesn't mean I'm inviting
and
to cheer and participate in "League of Movies".
