En los últimos años, he visto como hay muchas películas influenciadas por el género del western, muchas películas más que nada dentro del género de acción se les hace fácil poder tener como base películas del viejo oeste para hacer historias en tiempos modernos, esto lo digo porque pocas veces vemos películas de vaqueros y de ese mundo en dónde el más fuerte sobrevive y justamente en este año he visto varias películas dentro de este gran genero cómo es el western (todavía me falta por ver otras más) en donde cada una vemos historias clásicas con vaqueros y bandidos y otras en dónde se enfocan en contar cosas diferentes, tales como vivencias dentro de esa época, esto siempre es maravilloso en el cine porque siempre hay un momento de evolucionar dentro de un género y no ser repetitivo.

In recent years, I have seen how there are many films influenced by the western genre, many films mostly within the action genre it is easy for them to be able to take as a base old western movies to make stories in modern times, I say this because we rarely see cowboy movies and that world where the strongest survive and just this year I have seen several films within this great genre how is the western (I still have to see more) where each one we see classic stories with cowboys and bandits and others where they focus on telling different things, such as experiences within that era, this is always wonderful in cinema because there is always a time to evolve within a genre and not be repetitive.
"The Power of the Dog" es un film drama/western; se sitúa en 1925 y relata la historia de dos hermanos, Phil y George Burbank, unidos, pero con muchas diferencias, el primero es un vaquero, fuerte, decidido que conoce muy bien ese estilo de vida, inteligente, admirado, respetado y la vez muy intimidante, George es todo lo contrario, no es tomado muy en cuenta por sus empleados, todo esto es causado por cómo su hermano no le muestra nada de respeto, ya que lo ve inferior a él, pero eso no evita que George quiera mostrar un tipo de independencia, de querer formar una familia y cuando decide hacerlo, Phil toma ese acto como uno de traición es por eso que no perderá la oportunidad para poder doblegar la familia que su hermano ha elegido solo para hacer saber quién tiene el poder.
"The Power of the Dog" is a drama/western film, it is set in 1925 and tells the story of two brothers, Phil and George Burbank, united, but with many differences, the first one is a cowboy, strong, determined who knows very well that lifestyle, intelligent, admired, respected and at the same time very intimidating, George is the opposite, he is not taken very much into account by his employees, all this is caused by how his brother does not show him any respect, since he sees him as inferior to him, but that does not prevent George from wanting to show a kind of independence, to want to form a family and when he decides to do so, Phil takes that act as one of betrayal, that is why he will not miss the opportunity to be able to bend the family that his brother has chosen just to make it known who has the power.
La dirección y guion vino por parte de la directora y escritora Jane Campion; siempre he valorado esos directores (que también son guionistas) los cuales se toman un tiempo para desarrollar una historia o una visión para hacer su trabajo; Campion a pesar de ser una mujer muy activa en su trabajo, desde el momento de ser reconocida por la Academia con su film "The Piano" (1993) se toma una pausa de 12 años para regresar con esta película basada en una novela escrita por Thomas Savage en 1967; por ser un western en dónde parece que cada vez más el mundo moderno se hace más fuerte, pienso que está directora decidió desde el lente de su cámara eligió mostrar el ocaso del mundo de los vaqueros y el inicio de una época más sofisticada, se me hace imposible hablar sobre alguna toma que no fuera importante, todas son especiales desde la imagen de una casa que se ve pequeña cuando tiene detrás a una gran colina que se puede tomar de referencia a la imagen de Phil sobre los demás; cada una de las escenas muestra el peso de cada personaje, el ambiente creado en diferentes tomas por Campion es lúgubre y frío, con poca luz, es hasta deprimente, esto es más que nada lo que acompaña siempre a Phil y más cuando se muestra escenas dentro de la mansión, en cambio, en otras donde vamos descubriendo quienes en realidad son los personajes de esta historia, observamos diferentes cosas como libertad, luz y calma, son muchos y buenos detalles que nos brinda está gran directora en su película.
Está historia demuestra que la crueldad puede ser usada en una forma inteligente y es que es justamente es eso lo que da poder a Phill sobre los demás; está una historia sobre soledad, resentimiento, rabia, posesión y no podía faltar una clara prueba de que el más fuerte es quien sobrevive, esto es lo que siempre he pensado que debe estar relacionado de cualquier forma con un western y claramente esto es muy importante para esta historia. Me parece excelente que demuestre la imagen de masculinidad y que defina lo que es un hombre y que con eso muestre lo que los que se hacen llamar verdaderos hombres rechacen cualquier imagen y actitud que sea opositora a lo que ellos son, esto que acabo de describir es relevante para esta historia porque es el fundamento para el desarrollo desde el segundo acto hasta el final.
The direction and screenplay came from the director and writer Jane Campion. I have always appreciated those directors (who are also screenwriters) who take time to develop a story or a vision to do their job; Campion despite being a very active woman in her work, from the moment of being recognized by the Academy with her film "The Piano" (1993) she takes a 12 year break to return with this film based on a novel written by Thomas Savage in 1967; because it is a western where it seems that more and more the modern world is becoming stronger, I think that this director decided from the lens of her camera chose to show the decline of the cowboy world and the beginning of a more sophisticated era, it is impossible for me to talk about any shot that was not important, all are special from the image of a house that looks small when it has behind a big hill that can be taken as a reference to the image of Phil over the others; each of the scenes shows the weight of each character, the atmosphere created in different shots by Campion is gloomy and cold, with little light, it is even depressing, this is more than anything that always accompanies Phil and more when scenes inside the mansion are shown, however, in others where we discover who really are the characters of this story, we observe different things like freedom, light and calm, there are many good details that gives us this great director in his film.
This story shows that cruelty can be used in an intelligent way and that is exactly what gives Phill power over others; this is a story about loneliness, resentment, anger, possession and could not miss a clear proof that the strongest is the one who survives, this is what I have always thought that should be related in any way with a western and clearly this is very important for this story. I think it is excellent that it shows the image of masculinity and that it defines what a man is and with that it shows what those who call themselves real men reject any image and attitude that is opposed to what they are, this that I have just described is relevant to this story because it is the foundation for the development from the second act to the end.
Es imposible no referirse al personaje de Phil al hablar de esta película, es el protagonista, es el bien y el mal, debe ser uno de los mejores personajes que he visto en este año y todo es gracias a la interpretación de Benedict Cumberbatch, la presencia que tiene en todo el film es intimidante, su actitud de un ser superior a los demás es muy clara, él domina todo y a todos, cada palabra que dice, cada cosa que hace está completamente pensada, todo es premeditado para resaltar su imagen de ser poderoso y ser el mejor, no tiene humildad y ni le interesa tenerla, todo esto se percibe con la gran actuación de Cumberbatch; otra buena actuación a pesar de lo breve de sus escenas son las de Kirsten Dunst y Jesse Plemons; de Dunst me gustó lo primeramente feliz por encontrar a alguien a quien amar y que pueda ayudar a su hijo, es una mujer agradecida y fiel, pero a la vez es una mujer con un espíritu débil, sensible que sucumbe a la crueldad de un hombre, su quiebre es algo que me gustó mucho de su actuación, se ve el dolor que pasa cada día que debe lidiar con la maldad que habita en un hogar; de Plemons, a pesar de no mostrar la actitud, fuerza, decisión y hombría de su hermano, yo lo considero un personaje fuerte y decidido, él con su decisión desencadena está historia, si no ha sido valiente a querer buscar una familia, nada de eso fuera ocurrido, Plemons muestra sensibilidad en su actuación y claramente es la oposición de lo que Phil muestra en esta historia. No puedo dejar pasar el trabajo de Kodi Smit-McPhee, si George es un personaje sensible, seguramente Peter también lo es, es un joven que a pesar de sentir rechazo es valiente y decidido y eso hará que pueda descubrir un mundo el cual puede ser que a primera imagen no esté preparado de enfrentar; sin ninguna duda que estos cuatro personajes, todos juntos son muy importantes y cada uno de ellos son muy bien escritos e interpretados.
It is impossible not to refer to the character of Phil when talking about this film, he is the protagonist, he is the good and the evil, he must be one of the best characters I have seen this year and it is all thanks to the interpretation of Benedict Cumberbatch, the presence he has throughout the film is intimidating, his attitude of a being superior to others is very clear, he dominates everything and everyone, every word he says, every thing he does is completely thought out, everything is premeditated to highlight his image of being powerful and being the best, he has no humility and does not even care to have it, all this is perceived with the great performance of Cumberbatch; another good performance despite the brevity of their scenes are those of Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons; of Dunst I liked her firstly happy to find someone to love and who can help her son, she is a grateful and faithful woman, but at the same time she is a woman with a weak spirit, sensitive that succumbs to the cruelty of a man, her breakdown is something that I liked a lot of her performance, you can see the pain she goes through every day that she must deal with the evil that inhabits a home; Despite not showing the attitude, strength, decision and manhood of his brother, I consider him a strong and determined character, his decision triggers this story, if he has not been brave enough to look for a family, none of that would have happened, Plemons shows sensitivity in his performance and clearly is the opposition of what Phil shows in this story. I can't overlook the work of Kodi Smit-McPhee, if George is a sensitive character, surely Peter is too, he is a young man who despite feeling rejection is brave and determined and that will make him discover a world that he may not be ready to face at first glance; without any doubt that these four characters, all together are very important and each of them are very well written and interpreted.
Siendo sincero quería esperar más tiempo para ver este film, tenía la sensación de que fuera muy cruel y que el resultado final no me gustara, pero estaba completamente equivocado, ya que descubrí que este debe ser una de las películas más inteligentes que he visto, su guion es bueno, por todos los temas del cual trata esta historia, la música que juega un papel muy importante es otro de los puntos positivos del film, la evolución de la música nos da una gran referencia para dónde va la historia y esto junto a la gran dirección y buenas actuaciones nos responde porque ha sido tan tomada en cuenta para ser una de las principales favoritas para ganar los grandes premios del cine. Está debe ser una película que todo seguidor del cine debe ver porque a pesar de estar ambientada en 1925, trata de temas actuales, sobre la homofobia, rechazo, la apariencia, masculinidad, respeto y el miedo, cosas que pueden o hacen actuar de forma errónea en muchos momentos a diferentes personas en esta época actual y creo que, por eso, disfrute mucho de la historia porque nos muestra que, a pesar de ser basada en un tiempo antiguo, los comportamientos no cambian.
Being honest I wanted to wait more time to see this film, I had the feeling that it would be very cruel and that the final result I would not like, but I was completely wrong, as I discovered that this must be one of the most intelligent films I've seen, its script is good, for all the issues of which this story is about, the music that plays a very important role is another of the positive points of the film, the evolution of the music gives us a great reference for where the story goes and this together with the great direction and good performances answers us why it has been so taken into account to be one of the main favorites to win the big film awards. This must be a movie that every movie follower should see because despite being set in 1925, it deals with current issues, about homophobia, rejection, appearance, masculinity, respect and fear, things that can or do act wrong in many moments to different people in this current time and I think that, for that reason, I really enjoyed the story because it shows us that, despite being based in an old time, behaviors do not change.
