Plot
The film opens with the new Minister of Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour, delivering a rousing speech to the public about the “great threat” looming on the horizon and promising to protect them from all danger. Meanwhile, we see the dynamic trio—Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger—each preparing for what’s to come. The Dursley family moves away, leaving Harry home alone. Meanwhile, we see Hermione casting a spell on her parents, who proceed to forget her completely, just as we see her disappear from the photos they have in their home. A long and difficult mission awaits them.

For some reason, I’ve come to look back on these later Harry Potter movies with less fondness than the earlier ones. Maybe it’s because of the times I watched them—the first ones when I was just an innocent child, and the later ones when I was a teenager. Yes, I know it should all be a pleasant memory, but let’s just say that the latter wasn’t exactly like that. That said, I’m not implying that the movie is bad or anything like that. In fact, from what I’ve read, it’s been one of the best, both in terms of production and fidelity to the original work.
One detail that does strike me as a bit odd is the fact that it covers only half of the last novel. This means that its ending is just the midpoint of the final chapter of this great story, which can be somewhat frustrating for many. Of course, unless you binge-watch them, watching this movie without seeing the next and final part is like watching just half of any story. I don’t know who would do that, but hey, I’m not judging anyone, honestly. Still, I think this movie is packed with plenty of action, in addition to the usual fantasy, drama, and mystery.
Por alguna razón aparente, he llegado a recordar con menos cariño estas últimas películas de Harry Potter, en comparación con las primeras. Tal vez y sea por las épocas en las que llegué a verlas, siendo las primeras cuando apenas era un inocente niño y las últimas cuando estaba en plena adolescencia. Si, sé que debería ser todo un recuerdo agradable, pero digamos que lo segundo no fue así como tal. Igualmente, no digo con esto que la película sea mala ni nada por el estilo. Es más, por lo que he leído por ahí, ha sido una de las mejores, tanto por producción como por fidelidad a la obra original.
Un detalle que sí me choca un poco puede que sea el hecho de ser solo la mitad de la última novela como tal. Esto quiere decir que su final es solo el punto medio del último capítulo de esta gran historia, lo cual puede llegar a ser un tanto angustioso para muchos. Claro, a menos que te hagas una maratón, ver esta película sin ver la siguiente y última parte es como ver la mitad de una historia cualquiera nomás. No sé quién haría eso, pero bueno, no juzgo a nadie, la verdad. Aún así, considero que esta película está repleta de mucha acción, aparte de la fantasía, el drama y el misterio de siempre.

To start with, I want to point out that this Harry Potter movie is very different from the previous six films I’ve reviewed. First of all, everything we see throughout the film’s more than two hours does NOT take place within the famous Hogwarts School, which is interesting in and of itself. I like this shift in narrative because we see our protagonist and his friends traveling all over the place and facing enemies and all kinds of people and creatures in the magical world of Harry Potter. Watching the dynamic trio take on all these challenges in the world outside of school is quite exciting.
It’s like seeing the results of everything they learned at Hogwarts in the “real” and magical world of Harry Potter. And because of this, every detail, every mistake, and every problem and argument they have makes it feel more and more personal due to the nostalgia and everything that this mission they’ve been entrusted with entails. Because yes, practically speaking—and to avoid giving away too many spoilers—I’ll just say that Harry, Ron, and Hermione have the most important mission of all, which boils down to the typical “save the world” by defeating Lord Voldemort. However, seeing everything these three went through to achieve this makes it much more interesting.
Para empezar, quiero destacar que ésta película de Harry Potter es muy diferente a las anteriores seis películas que les he traído. Primero está el hecho de que todo lo que vemos a lo largo de las más de dos horas de película NO sucede dentro de la famosa escuela Hogwarts, lo cual es interesante de por sí. Este cambio de narrativa con la historia me gusta ya de por sí debido a que vemos a nuestro protagonista y sus amigos viajando por todas partes y enfrentándose a enemigos y a todo tipo de personas y criaturas en el mundo mágico de Harry Potter. Ver al trío dinámico enfrentarse a todas estas cosas en el mundo fuera de la escuela es algo que emociona bastante.
Es como ver los resultados de todo lo que aprendieron en Hogwarts en el “mundo real” y mágico de Harry Potter. Y debido a esto, cada detalle, cada error y cada problema y discusiones que tienen hacen que se sienta más y más personal debido a la nostalgia y todo lo que implica esta misión que les encomendaron. Porque si, prácticamente y para no darles tantos spoilers solo les diré que Harry, Ron y Hermione tienen la misión más importante de todos, lo cual se reduce a la típica de “salvar el mundo” venciendo a Lord Voldemort. While many people didn’t like it or found it boring—especially during the many scenes where we see the team stranded in one place after another, trying to figure out how to destroy the Horcruxes they’ve obtained—because it seemed like they weren’t doing anything. Even in the movie itself, they argue about all of this, which adds that touch of drama and tension that’s always needed in any story about three friends fighting to defeat a powerful and practically invincible enemy. But I think one of the main highlights of this movie is the secrets about Albus Dumbledore that are gradually revealed and the legacy he left behind.
Basically, aside from the Horcrux mission, they have to decipher the hidden messages and what Dumbledore left for Harry, Ron, and Hermione. I think it could have used a bit more narrative detail to convey what Harry Potter thought about everything he discovered about his great mentor, especially after what happened at the end of the sixth movie. But otherwise, I think everything the movie shows us isn’t so bad, and all the secrets that are revealed, plus the occasional mini-story we see—which I really liked.
Si bien a muchos no les gustó o se les hizo aburrido incluso muchos momentos donde vemos al equipo varado en un lugar tras otro buscando una forma de destruir los Horrocruxes que consiguieron debido a que pareciera que no hicieran nada. Incluso en la misma película se discute por eso y todo, lo cual causa ese toque de drama y toxicidad que siempre hace falta en toda historia de tres amigos luchando para vencer a un enemigo poderoso y prácticamente invencible. Pero considero que uno de los puntos principales de esta película son los secretos que se van revelando de Albus Dumbledore y el legado que le dejaron.
Prácticamente, aparte de la misión de los Horrocruxes, tienen que descifrar los mensajes ocultos y lo que les dejó Dumbledore a Harry, Ron y Hermione. Considero que faltó un poco más de detalles narrativos para transmitirnos qué era lo que opinaba Harry Potter de todo lo que descubrió de su gran maestro, sobre todo luego de lo ocurrido a finales de la sexta película. Pero de resto considero que no está tan mal todo lo que nos muestra la película y todos los secretos que se van revelando, además de una que otra mini historia que vemos y que me gustó muchísimo.

The romance is barely noticeable—just a scene or two, and that’s it. But hey, I’m not complaining too much about this since, mainly, I’m here to see the drama, the fantasy, and everything else this great Harry Potter story has to offer. While I like that they take the time to develop certain personal and human aspects of each of our protagonists, I admire even more all the fantastic, action-packed elements and settings—and let me warn you, there are plenty of them. What can I say? I’m just a simple guy who grew up watching these cinematic gems since I was a kid.
Ver cómo desarrollan a un personaje que, solamente diré que no veremos más en ésta y en la siguiente y última película es algo que me gusta mucho. Pero más me gustó fue cómo le dedicaron su tiempo para desarrollar la relación que tienen tanto Harry Potter como Ron Weasley y Hermione Granger entre sí. Aunque sí admito que hubo uno que otro detalle que no me termina de convencer, pero ya es solo cosa mía. Lo bueno de todo esto es que, lejos de lo que dicen muchos, la película consigue equilibrar -una vez más- toda la acción, la fantasía, el drama, el misterio y algo de romance que vemos, también.
Esto último casi no se llega a apreciar siquiera, solo una escena o dos y ya. Pero bueno, no me quejo mucho de esto ya que, principalmente yo vengo a ver el drama, la fantasía y todo lo que demás que nos tiene esta grandiosa historia de Harry Potter. Si bien me gusta que le dediquen tiempo a desarrollar ciertos aspectos personales y humanos de cada uno de nuestros protagonistas, admiro más todos los elementos y escenarios fantásticos y repletos de acción que tiene que, ojo, no son pocos, les aviso. Qué les puedo decir, soy un joven sencillo que creció desde pequeño viendo estas joyas de películas.

That’s why I consider it one of the most entertaining films—or at least a large part of it—in the entire series. We also see that it maintains that dark, dramatic, and graphic tone that defines this series so well. For example, in every scene featuring Lord Voldemort and his entire entourage gathered together or in action, it’s hard to ignore that dark, cold tone and those visual details, coupled with performances that seem inhuman. One of the performances that stands out the most here, aside from the main antagonist—of course—is Bellatrix Lestrange. We also see the return of a few despicable characters in this film.
But more than anything, it’s new characters we’re getting to know, mostly enemies or potential traitors, which gives us an idea of just how dark, dangerous, and desolate this magical world we’ve known since the first film has become. Something I do like is how the film manages to convey Lord Voldemort’s enormous influence on this world. Although there is a certain detail regarding this “great wizard’s” enormous obsession with a 17-year-old boy like Harry Potter. But anyway, I don’t think this is anything compared to what we’ll see in the next film. Although the issue of the hierarchy of powers here does really catch my attention.
Es por eso que considero que es una de las más entretenidas, al menos una gran parte de ella, de toda la saga. Vemos también que mantiene ese tono oscuro, dramático y gráfico que representa muy bien esta saga. Por ejemplo, cada escena que vemos con Lord Voldemort y todo su séquito reunido o en acción, es difícil ignorar ese tono oscuro, frío y esos detalles visuales con actuaciones que parecen no ser de humanos. Una de las actuaciones que más se destacan aquí, aparte del antagonista principal -por supuesto-, es Bellatrix Lestrange. También vemos el regreso de uno que otro personaje detestable en esta película.
Pero más que nada son personajes nuevos los que vamos conociendo, la mayoría enemigos o posibles traidores, lo cual nos da una idea de lo oscura, peligrosa y desolada que llega a ser este mundo mágico que hemos conocido desde la primera película. Algo que sí me gusta es cómo la película logra transmitir la enorme influencia de Lord Voldemort en este mundo. Si bien hay cierto detalle con la enorme obsesión que tiene este “gran mago” con un chico de 17 años como lo es Harry Potter. Pero bueno, creo que esto no es nada con lo que llegamos a ver en la siguiente película. Aunque sí me llama mucho la atención el tema de la escala de poderes aquí.

To be honest, I didn't really understand this part of the movie very well—just that the wand seems to have some kind of influence. On the other hand, speaking of wands, another thing I did like about this movie is the story of The Three Brothers (The Deathly Hallows). Aside from the amazing animation they used to illustrate that story, I really liked the history and origin of each Deathly Hallow. What’s fascinating about this is how everything ties in so well with Dumbledore’s secrets, what Voldemort is after, and Harry and his friends’ mission.
While it didn’t show us enough about certain secrets of Dumbledore, I’m somewhat satisfied with the rest. Because yes, I assure you this movie has many truly fascinating and entertaining scenes. Action sequences, mostly, aside from the occasional confrontation and battle that’s worth watching. And well, don’t expect much from the ending—just don’t expect a good one; I’m just warning you. I think that’s why—along with the many other settings it features—this movie really struck a chord with me, and it happened just recently, to top it all off.
Sinceramente no llegué a entender muy bien esto en la película, solo el hecho de que la varita parece influir en algo. Por otro lado y hablando de varitas, otra cosa que sí me gustó de esta película es el relato de Los Tres Hermanos (Las Reliquias de la Muerte). Aparte de la tremenda animación que hicieron aquí para ilustrarnos dicho relato, la historia y el origen de cada Reliquia de la Muerte es algo que me gustó bastante. Lo fascinante de esto es cómo todo llega a conectarse muy bien con los secretos de Dumbledore, lo que busca Voldemort y la misión de Harry y sus amigos.
Si bien faltó mostrarnos más información sobre ciertos secretos de Dumbledore, me quedo un poco conforme por lo demás. Porque si, te aseguro que esta película tiene muchas escenas bastante fascinantes y entretenidas. Escenas de percusión, más que nada, aparte de uno que otro enfrentamiento y batallas que valen la pena ver. Y bueno, no esperes mucho de su final, solo que no esperes un buen final, te aviso nomás. Creo que por esto, además de muchos otros escenarios que tiene, es que me caló muy hondo esta película y fue recientemente ahora, para colmo.

To wrap things up, I’ll now talk about the audiovisual aspects of this film, which have improved significantly compared to the previous one. The fact alone that they fixed the dull, dark tone of the previous film is more than enough to consider this one better. Otherwise, the overall audiovisual production isn’t all that different, apart from, of course, a few details regarding the use of moving cameras. Due to the story, we see more action scenes, chases, 360-degree turns, and exaggerated camera movements. The use of light and shadow isn’t bad either, nor are the shots and motion effects.
The color palette remains cold and dark, but the colors stand out a bit more than in the previous film. It retains certain visual details and doesn’t censor anything when it comes to deaths and the like. I also like that they’ve done an excellent job with the visual effects in this film, mostly using CGI in the various action scenes it features. Not to mention the design of some creatures and characters themselves. The blend of this with practical visual effects is excellent, especially because it delivers such well-executed scenes that have held up very well. The sound effects are the most remarkable aspect, even surpassing the soundtrack. Anyway, here’s the penultimate Harry Potter movie.
Personally, I give it a 9.5/10 rating in terms of the fantasy, drama, action, and mystery genres.
Para finalizar, les hablaré ahora del apartado audiovisual que tiene esta película, la cual ha mejorado mucho en comparación con la anterior. Solamente con el hecho de que corrigieron el tema opaco y oscuro que tenía la película anterior es más que suficiente para considerarla mejor. De resto, toda la producción audiovisual no llega a ser tan distinta, a diferencia, claro, de uno que otro detalle en cuanto al uso de cámaras en movimiento. Debido a la historia, vemos más escenas en movimiento, persecuciones, giros en 360 grados y cámaras con movimientos exagerados. El uso de luces y sombras tampoco está tan mal, al igual que los planos y efectos de movimiento.
La paleta de colores sigue siendo fría y oscura, pero resalta un poco más los colores que en la película anterior. Mantiene ciertos detalles visuales y no censura nada en cuanto a muertes y demás. También me gusta que hayan realizado un excelente trabajo con los efectos visuales de esta película, mayormente usando CGI en las diferentes escenas de acción que tiene. Eso sin mencionar el diseño de algunas criaturas y personajes como tal. La mezcla de esto con los efectos visuales prácticos es excelente, sobre todo porque logra darnos escenas tan bien logradas que han conseguido mantenerse muy bien. Los efectos de sonido son de lo más destacable, incluso por encima de la banda sonora. En fin, aquí les dejo la penúltima película de Harry Potter.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía, drama, acción y misterio.
