Hello, Harry Potter fans. Today we’ve reached the end of this special series dedicated to one of the most famous film franchises in the fantasy genre. It’s a finale that an entire generation has been eagerly awaiting—a generation that grew up with the series since we were children. And I include myself in that, since I’m part of that generation, so of course I’ll be talking about it. Based on the second half of J.K. Rowling’s novel of the same name, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 was directed by David Yates. It stars Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson. Y me incluyo en esto ya que soy parte de dicha generación, así que por supuesto que les hablaré de eso. Basada en la segunda mitad de la novela homónima de J.K. Plot
The film opens with the final scene from the previous movie, where we see Lord Voldemort finally obtain what he had been so desperately seeking. Meanwhile, we see Harry Potter visiting the grave of the beloved character who died in that previous finale. Harry meets up with his friends and some refugees at a house near the beach. There, our protagonist speaks with one of the people they saved the night before, a goblin who used to work at Gringotts Bank named Griphook, whom he asks to take them to Bellatrix Lestrange’s Vault. The goblin asks for the Sword of Gryffindor in exchange, to which Harry agrees.

La película inicia mostrándonos la escena final de la película anterior, donde podemos ver a Lord Voldemort conseguir lo que tan desesperadamente estaba buscando. Por otro lado, vemos a Harry Potter ver la tumba del querido personaje que llegó a morir en dicho final anterior. Harry se encuentra con sus amigos y algunos refugiados en una casa cerca de una playa. Allí nuestro protagonista habla con una de las personas que salvaron anoche, un duende que antes trabajaba en el Banco de Gringotts llamado Griphook a quien le pide que los lleve a la Bóveda de Bellatrix Lestrange. El duende le pide a cambio la Espada de Gryffindor, a lo cual Harry acepta.

I still remember the first time I got to watch this final Harry Potter movie. Unfortunately, it wasn’t in theaters, but thanks to a CD/DVD set I was given that included the entire series. The quality wasn’t the best, not by a long shot, but my eagerness and nostalgia to watch it made everything else seem unimportant. I don’t remember how many times I ended up watching this movie, but I know it was fewer times than the first five, to be honest. Every time I saw a marathon on cable TV featuring all the Harry Potter movies, I always watched them all the way through.
Just thinking that more than ten years (15 years, to be exact) have passed since then is something that really gets to me. Especially because back then, my life changed quite a bit when I started high school. I’m not going to say it’s my favorite movie in the entire Harry Potter series, since I don’t think any of them beat The Prisoner of Azkaban. However, I would rank this final installment among the top three movies of the whole series. And not just because it’s the finale, but because of the amount of action it has, which is both fascinating and absurd at the same time.
Recuerdo todavía cuando llegué a ver por primera vez esta última película de Harry Potter. Lamentablemente no fue en cines, sino gracias a un CD/DVD que me regalaron por ahí con toda la saga. No tenía la mejor calidad, ni muchísimo menos, pero las ganas y la nostalgia de querer verla hizo que todo lo demás no tuviera importancia. Tampoco recuerdo cuántas veces llegué a ver esta película, pero sé que fue menos veces que las primeras cinco, la verdad. Cada vez que veía una maratón en la televisión por cable con todas las películas de Harry Potter, siempre las veía hasta el final.
El siquiera pensar que ya han pasado más de diez años (15 años, para ser exactos) de esto es algo que me da mucho sentimiento. Sobre todo porque en aquel entonces mi vida llegó a cambiar bastante al entrar a la secundaria. No voy a decir que es mi película favorita de toda la saga de Harry Potter, ya que considero que ninguna le gana al Prisionero de Azkaban. Sin embargo, pondría esta última entrega entre las mejores tres películas de todas. Y no solo por el hecho de ser el final, sino por la cantidad de acción que tiene, lo cual es bastante fascinante y absurdo a la vez.

Although the movie starts off as depressing and hopeless as you can imagine, it really kicks into high gear right when they decide to go to Gringotts Bank. I’ll just say that, unlike the previous film, after the first twenty minutes, it’s nonstop action: from chases, escapes with dragons, unexpected visits, exciting reunions, fascinating confrontations, major preparations, and a full-scale battle between wizards, monsters, teachers, and students. Regarding the latter, something else worth noting about this film is that much of what happens takes place at Hogwarts.
This is excellent because, as expected, Hogwarts was what started this whole story with our beloved Harry Potter from the first film onward. What I do have to tell you is how fascinating it was to witness all the battle, chaos, and destruction of Hogwarts throughout the two hours of this feature film. Obviously, the most notable aspect of this is the excellent special effects on display here, which is quite impressive given the sheer amount of action the film contains.
Si bien la película empieza de lo más deprimente y desesperanzador que se pueda imaginar, posteriormente pasa a la acción con todo justo cuando deciden ir al Banco de Gringotts. Solo diré que, a diferencia de la película anterior, después de los primeros veinte minutos es un sin parar de cosas que pasan: desde persecuciones, huidas con dragones, visitas inesperadas, reuniones emocionantes, enfrentamientos fascinantes, grandes preparaciones y toda una batalla campal entre magos, monstruos, profesores y estudiantes. Con respecto a esto último, algo que también hay que destacar de esta película es que gran parte de todo lo que sucede es en Hogwarts.
Esto es excelente ya que, como es de esperarse, la escuela Hogwarts fue lo que inició toda esta historia con nuestro querido Harry Potter desde la primera película en adelante. Lo que sí les tengo que decir es lo fascinante que fue disfrutar de toda la batalla, el caos y la destrucción de todo Hogwarts a lo largo de las dos horas que dura este largometraje. Obviamente, lo más destacable de esto son los excelentes efectos especiales que se pueden ver aquí, lo cual es bastante debido a la misma cantidad de acción que posee la misma.

Aside from that, I think the way everyone gathers at Hogwarts at the end for the battle against Voldemort and his army is another highlight. Especially because we get a pretty satisfying resolution for several supporting characters who really managed to stand out in this final installment. There’s one in particular who really caught my attention when I watched the movie recently. I’m talking about Neville Longbottom, a character who—literally—was downplayed in all the previous films. The guy we thought was just a silly, clumsy kid ended up becoming a total MVP.
That’s what I love about this Harry Potter film series: when it comes to introducing and developing a secondary character, they do it quite well. We’ve seen it many times before, but in this latest film, we can see it several times. To give you another example, there’s Professor Minerva McGonagall, who has several unforgettable moments. There’s also the case of Harry’s two friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, whom we finally see together after seven films of nonstop romantic drama. Honestly, I don’t think Ron and Hermione are the best couple we’ve come to know in this series, really.
Aparte de esto, pienso que la manera en la que se reúnen todos al final en Hogwarts para la batalla contra Voldemort y su ejército es otra cosa a destacar. Sobre todo porque podemos ver un cierre bastante convincente de varios personajes secundarios que han conseguido destacarse bastante bien en esta última entrega. En especial está uno que me llamó mucho la atención cuando vi la película hace poco. Estoy hablando de Neville Longvottom, un personaje que -literalmente- han nerfeado en todas las anteriores películas. Quien pensábamos que solo era un chico tonto y torpe, terminó convirtiéndose en todo un MVP.
Es lo que me gusta de esta saga de películas de Harry Potter, que al momento de presentar y desarrollar a un personaje secundario lo hacen bastante bien. Ya lo hemos visto muchas veces antes, pero en esta última cinta podemos notarlo varias veces. Para ponerles otro ejemplo, está la profesora Minerva McGonagall quien tiene varios momentos inolvidables. También está el caso de la pareja de amigos de Harry, Ron Weasley y Hermione Granger quienes al fin los vemos juntos, después de siete películas de puro drama romántico sin parar. De verdad, pienso que Ron y Hermione no son de las mejores parejas que llegamos a conocer en esta saga, de verdad.

I actually think Harry and Ginny make a better couple, even though we hardly see them together in this movie—just like in the previous ones. But setting aside the very little bit of sweet romance we do see here, let’s just say this dynamic trio makes a great team. Each character stands out in their own way and manages to give us some pretty entertaining moments. But the one who really stands out from the entire cast is a character that many have surely come to detest. That’s right, I’m talking about Severus Snape, the very same man who betrayed Albus Dumbledore himself and everything else. Without giving away too many spoilers, I’ll just say that by the end of the movie, we’ll forgive this malicious character.
In fact, more than a few of you might even feel a bit familiar with what we discover about Snape in this final film. I’ll just say that there’s no greater demonstration of unconditional love than what we see here, without a doubt. Aside from that, I think the plot itself isn’t so bad; in fact, it’s quite entertaining thanks to all the action. There isn’t a single moment where you get to catch your breath or think it’s absurd in the slightest. But one thing I do feel I have to complain about a bit is the performances of some of the characters. I won’t name names, to be honest, since you could find something to complain about with each one in this regard.
Incluso creo que Harry y Ginny hacen mejor pareja y eso que casi no se les ve juntos en esta película, al igual que en las anteriores. Pero quitando el poquísimo romance agradable que se puede ver aquí, digamos que este trío dinámico hacen un gran equipo. Cada personaje se destaca a su manera y logran darnos momentos bastante entretenidos. Pero quién más llama la atención de todo el elenco es un personaje que seguramente muchos han llegado a detestar. Así es, estoy hablando de Severus Snape, el mismo que llegó a traicionar al propio Albus Dumbledore y todo lo demás. Sin darles tantos spoilers, solo les diré que al terminar la película perdonaremos a este malicioso personaje.
Es más, puede que hasta incluso más de uno se sienta un poco familiarizado con lo que llegamos a descubrir de Snape en esta última película. Solo diré que no hay mayor demostración de amor incondicional que lo que llegamos a ver aquí, sin duda alguna. Fuera de esto, considero que la trama como tal no está tan mal, es más, es bastante entretenida por toda la acción que tiene. No hay ningún momento en el que llegues a descansar o pensar que es absurda para nada. Pero algo que sí considero que he de quejarme un poco es con las actuaciones de algunos personajes. No diré nombres, la verdad, ya que de cada quien se puede sacar alguna queja en cuanto a esto.

Well, not all of them, but most of the characters or performances. For example, when it comes to the main villain, Voldemort, I’m not going to say he did a bad job, per se. I’ll just admit that there were moments when I felt a little uncomfortable, especially toward the end. But I think this has more to do with the character himself or what the screenwriters and producers of this film wanted to show us here. Voldemort’s character is evil, yes, but we almost always see him as tormented or obsessed solely with taking Harry Potter’s life. And it’s absurd to think that the self-proclaimed “Most Exceptional Wizard” in this world can’t manage to kill a 17-year-old teenager.
Saying this is enough for anyone to understand just how absurd this plot is. But I think the appeal here is seeing how a simple teenager whom everyone calls “The Chosen One” manages to defeat the “Most Exceptional Wizard” in the world. Because yes, there are things that really stand out throughout this adventure that Harry and his friends embark on to defeat Voldemort, and that is the way in which all the places, objects, stories, and events we know intertwine in a grand finale. All of this can be interpreted as an exhausting, dark, and perverse quest for power and eternity in a magical and fantastical world.
O bueno, no a todos, pero sí a la mayoría de personajes o actuaciones. Por ejemplo, en el caso del enemigo principal, Voldemort, no voy a decir que lo hizo mal, mal como tal. Solo admitiré que hubo momentos en los que me sentí un poco incómodo, sobre todo al final. Pero creo que esto se debe más al personaje como tal o lo que los guionistas o productores de esta película quisieron mostrarnos aquí. El personaje de Voldemort es malvado, sí, pero casi siempre lo vemos como angustiado o obsesionado únicamente con quitarle la vida a Harry Potter. Y es absurdo pensar que el autoproclamado “Mago Más Excepcional” de este mundo no logre quitarle la vida a un adolescente de 17 años.
Decir esto es ya suficiente para que cualquiera entienda lo absurdo que es esta trama como tal. Pero creo que el atractivo aquí es ver cómo un simple adolescente al cual todos llaman “El Elegido” logra vencer al “Mago Más Excepcional” de este mundo. Porque sí, hay cosas que llaman mucho la atención durante toda esta aventura en la que Harry y sus amigos incursionan para acabar con Voldemort y es la manera en la que todos los lugares, objetos, historias y casos que conocemos se entrelazan en un gran final. Todo esto lo podemos traducir a una extenuante, oscura y perversa forma de buscar poder y eternidad en un mundo mágico y fantástico.

Voldemort’s desire for power and eternal life is evident in every plot point throughout this entire saga. And the way it all ends here drives home a message that’s easy to grasp once we reach the conclusion: nothing is more powerful than love and friendship. Yes, we’re trotting out another cliché that’s common in these movies, but in the end, those generic happy endings are enough. After so many losses, so many failures, and so many struggles and battles, it’s best to understand that power doesn’t solve everything in life. What does solve it is teamwork and the desire to have something more valuable and important than yourself so you can keep moving forward.
Another thing I’d like to mention is the ridiculous “plot twist” the movie throws in right at the end with our protagonist. I mean, I can accept any halfway reasonable explanation they give me for what happens, but nothing will change the fact that it’s pure plot twist. Whether or not that’s how it happens in the novel, it makes me laugh just to think about the absurd number of times Harry Potter could have died throughout all these movies, and yet, in the end, when what happens happens, he’s still alive. But anyway, aside from this typical cliché and the occasional deus ex machina in the movie, it was still very entertaining overall.
Dicho deseo de poder y vida eterna que tiene Voldemort nos mostró todos los casos que vemos en toda esta saga. Y la forma en la que todo termina aquí nos deja claro un mensaje que es fácil de captar una vez llegados al final: nada es más poderoso que el amor y la amistad. Si, aquí sacamos otra frase bastante cliché y común en estas películas, pero al final dichos finales todo felices y genéricos son suficientes. Luego de tantas pérdidas, tantos fracasos y tantas luchas y batallas, es mejor entender que el poder no lo resuelve todo en la vida. Lo que sí lo hace es el trabajo en equipo y el deseo de tener algo más valioso e importante que tú mismo para así seguir adelante.
Otra cosa que me gustaría mencionar es el tremendo “guión” que tiene la película justo al final con nuestro protagonista. O sea, puedo llegar a entender cualquier explicación medio razonable que me den sobre lo que sucede, pero nada va a quitar el hecho de que es puro guión. Ya sea porque así pasa en la novela o no, me da risa incluso el pensar en la cantidad absurda de posibilidades que tuvo Harry Potter de haber muerto a lo largo de todas estas películas y que, al final, cuando pasa lo que llega a pasar, sigue vivo. Pero bueno, aparte de este típico cliché y uno que otro Deus Ex-Machina que tiene la película, igual fue muy entretenido todo.

There are also a few other details worth mentioning about this movie, such as the baffling hierarchy of magical power depicted here, the disappearance or absence of certain key characters at the end, and the scant information we’re given about what happened to the other Deathly Hallows. But then again, we were missing a lot of context regarding many other things in previous Harry Potter movies, so it’s only natural that the same thing would happen in this final installment. But anyway, setting aside the script, the story, and the characters, I think the film stands out quite well for its excellent audiovisual effects.
And to wrap things up, we’ll talk about this very point, since one thing we have to admit the director did very well this time around is the audiovisual effects themselves. The film maintains the same dark tone we saw in the previous installment, as does the color palette and the use of light and shadow. Cinematographic styles such as static and moving shots also stand out quite a bit, especially in action and chase scenes. I really liked how this time they managed to play around quite effectively with aerial shots, motion effects, and the various angles we see.
También hay uno que otro detalle que se pudiera mencionar de esta película como lo es la incomprensible escala de poder mágico que tienen aquí, la desaparición o ausencia de ciertos personajes importantes al final y la escasa información que nos dan de lo que ocurrió con las demás reliquias de la muerte. Pero bueno, nos faltó mucho contexto sobre muchas otras cosas en películas anteriores de Harry Potter, así que es normal que suceda lo mismo en esta última ocasión. Pero bueno, fuera del guión, la historia y los personajes; considero que la película destaca bastante bien por tener excelentes efectos audiovisuales.

La película mantiene el mismo tono oscuro que vemos en la cinta anterior, al igual que sucede con la paleta de colores y el manejo de luces y sombras. Los estilos de fotografía como lo son los planos fijos y en movimiento también destacan bastante, sobre todo en escenas de acción y persecución. Me gustó mucho cómo en esta ocasión llegan a jugar bastante bien con las cámaras aéreas, los efectos de movimiento y los distintos ángulos que vemos.

La película también posee muy buenos efectos visuales, ya sean prácticos o hechos por computadora. En especial los últimos, sobre todo al momento de darnos escenas fantásticas y repletas de acción en gran parte de la película. El diseño de las criaturas, los diferentes planos y vistas de Hogwarts y la misma batalla que ocurre allí son momentos donde se destacan bastante bien. Si es cierto que por el tono y el exceso de uso de sombras y escenarios con poca luz no se puede apreciar bien esto. Por otro lado, los efectos de sonido son de lo mejor, incluso llegan a destacarse en varios momentos de la película. La banda sonora está bien, pero no es nada en comparación. En fin, aquí les dejo la última película de Harry Potter.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía, acción, aventura y drama.
