Plot
The film opens with a scene inside an old cemetery, where a huge, terrifying statue of Death stands. A Muggle caretaker named Frank notices a light in the upstairs room of an old, abandoned house. As he approaches to see who is there, he spots three individuals, one of whom is the loyal supporter, traitor, and coward we met in the previous film, named Peter Pettigrew. The one sitting in an armchair appears to be Lord Voldemort, and another person—unknown for the moment—who is entrusted with an important mission: to bring Harry Potter into his evil plan.

Following the masterpiece that was The Prisoner of Azkaban, this fourth installment of the Harry Potter saga has managed to maintain that same excellent quality, production, and storytelling. While the audiovisual differences between the two films are quite noticeable, it still manages to capture our attention and ensures we’ll remember it for the rest of our lives, for one reason or another. That was certainly the case for me, since I also watched this movie a lot as a child and teenager. To be honest, I remember this movie very well, both for its romantic storyline and its iconic final arc.
The way the film begins makes the dark and sinister tone of the story itself very clear. So far, we’ve only seen fantastical and dangerous creatures, along with the occasional unsuccessful assassination attempt. But from here on, we’ll see how this Harry Potter story shifts into something more macabre and disheartening. To avoid giving away too many spoilers, I’ll just say that this fourth installment revolves around a rather dangerous tournament in which our protagonist will, obviously, be a participant. And in that tournament, some rather strange things will happen.
Luego de la Obra Maestra que fue El Prisionero de Azkaban, esta cuarta entrega de la saga de Harry Potter ha conseguido mantener dicha calidad, producción y narrativa tan excelentes. Si bien es bastante notable la diferencia audiovisual entre una película y otra, igualmente consigue captar nuestra atención y hace que la recordemos por el resto de nuestras vidas, ya sea por una razón u otra. En mi caso sucedió así, debido a que también veía mucho esta película cuando era niño y adolescente. Si les soy sincero, recuerdo muy bien esta película tanto por su historia romántica como por su icónico arco final.
La forma en la que inicia la película nos deja bien claro el tono oscuro y tenebroso que posee su historia como tal. Hasta ahora solo hemos visto criaturas fantásticas y peligrosas, además de uno que otro intento de asesinato sin éxito alguno. Pero a partir de aquí veremos cómo cambia esta historia de Harry Potter a algo más macabro y desalentador. Para no darles tantos spoilers, solo les diré que esta cuarta entrega gira en torno a un torneo bastante peligroso donde nuestro protagonista será, obviamente, participante. Y en dicho torneo ocurrirán cosas un tanto/bastante extrañas.

From the moment the tournament begins onward, the film is packed with a wealth of elements, scenes, and hidden details that are quite interesting. If you’re a huge fan of the film series because you’ve watched these movies countless times—like me—you’ll understand that feeling of how the film itself hints at how it will end through certain signs, gestures, and coincidences. So, yes, one of the strengths I really love about this film is the narrative and the way the screenplay is crafted. Of course, there are certain details worth highlighting, but this is mostly due to specific characters and antagonists.
Starting with the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody, who, since his introduction at the start of Harry Potter’s fourth year at Hogwarts, has proven to be a cruel, ruthless, and—of course—lunatic character. Moody is one of the most prominent characters not only because of his personality, as described, but also because of all the strange things that happen throughout the film. After the catastrophic experience of the Quidditch World Cup that we see at the beginning, the start of the new school year at Hogwarts and the whole business of the Triwizard Tournament is total chaos.
Desde la forma en la que empieza el torneo en adelante, la película posee un caudal de elementos, escenas y detalles ocultos y bastante interesante. Si eres un gran fan de la saga de películas debido a la cantidad incontable de veces que has visto estas películas -como yo- comprenderán esa sensación de cómo la propia cinta te muestra con ciertas señales, gestos y casualidades cómo va a terminar. Así que, si, uno de los puntos positivos y que me gustan mucho de esta película es la narrativa y la manera en la que el guión está hecho. Claro, hay ciertos detalles a destacar, pero esto se debe más a ciertos personajes y antagonistas.
Empezando por el profesor de Defensa Contra las Artes Oscuras, Alastor “Ojoloco” Moody, quien desde su presentación a inicios de este cuarto año educativo de Harry Potter en Hogwarts; ha demostrado ser un personaje cruel, despiadado y lunático, por supuesto. Moody es de los personajes más destacados no solo por su personalidad ya descrita, sino también por todas las cosas extrañas que ocurren a lo largo de la película. Luego de la catastrófica experiencia del Torneo Mundial de Quidditch que vemos al principio, el inicio del nuevo año en Hogwarts y todo el tema del Torneo de los Tres Magos es un caos total.

I don’t want to go into detail about every strange event that happens in the movie so as not to spoil it for you—I’ll say it again—but I can tell you that it has unexpected moments and twists that really make you think about what’s going on in that Triwizard Tournament. I really like the way they incorporate these elements into the movie without losing the fantastical tone of the story. The same goes for the romance we see—or rather, what you might call romance—at the infamous Triwizard Christmas Ball.
But in the end, all of this just shows us various unfortunate romantic experiences involving our beloved protagonists: Harry, Ron, and Hermione. This is another thing I like about the movie: we see a slightly more mature development in the characters compared to the previous films. Both their attraction to classmates of the opposite sex and their dating experiences are quite an adventure—it’s fascinating to see it all unfold in this magical world. And even more so when we see that, this year, Hogwarts welcomes students from two other European schools for the tournament.
No quiero contarles como tal cada suceso extraño que ocurre durante la película para no darles spoilers, repito, pero sí les puedo decir que tiene momentos y giros inesperados que te ponen a pensar bastante sobre lo que ocurre en dicho Torneo de los Tres Magos. La manera en la que incorporan estos elementos en la película sin perder ese tono fantástico que posee esta historia me gusta mucho. Lo mismo sucede con el romance que vemos, o bueno, lo que se podría decir romance a lo que llegamos a ver en el dichoso Baile Navideño de los Tres Magos.
Pero al final todo esto solo nos muestra diferentes experiencias desafortunadas en el amor con nuestros queridos protagonistas: Harry, Ron y Hermione. Esto es otra cosa que me gusta también de la película, que vemos un desarrollo un poco más maduro en sus personajes, en comparación con la cintas anteriores. Tanto los gustos por compañeros del otro sexo y sus experiencias saliendo con ellos es toda una aventura que fascina bastante verlo en este mundo mágico. Y más cuando vemos que, en este año, la escuela Hogwarts recibe a estudiantes de otras dos escuelas europeas para el torneo.

There are other new characters who really stand out thanks to that tournament, such as Cedric Diggory. Incidentally, despite his limited screen time in the film, this character gave us one of the most heartbreaking endings in the entire Harry Potter series. It’s interesting how a secondary character like Cedric has had a much better character arc than even some of the main characters. What I didn’t like was how his role in this story (not to mention the word itself) ended in such a pathetic way.
Seriously, at the beginning they describe him and the other two tournament participants as the best of their generation, only to end up like that. But then again, the same can be said of Alastor Moody, who is introduced at the start as “The Dark Wizard Hunter” only to end up as we see him in the end. Without a doubt, that ending leaves you thinking—and quite a bit, thanks to the “big” Plot Twist it has. Especially because of the way the entire plot has unfolded up to that point. Let’s just say that all the mysteries and strange things that happen are revealed at the end.
Hay otros personajes nuevos que destacan bastante gracias a dicho torneo, como lo es Cedric Diggory. Por cierto, este personaje, a pesar de su poca aparición en la película, nos dió uno de los finales más desgarradores que podemos ver en toda la saga de Harry Potter. Es curioso cómo un personaje secundario como Cedric ha tenido un desarrollo muchísimo mejor que incluso algunos personajes principales. Lo que no me gustó fue cómo finaliza su participación en esta historia (para no decir la palabra) de una forma tan patética.
De verdad, describen al principio tanto a él como a los otros dos participantes del torneo como los mejores de su generación para al final terminar de esa manera. Pero bueno, lo mismo se puede decir de Alastor Moody quien lo presentan al principio como “El Cazador de Magos Tenebrosos” para que al final termine como lo vemos al final. Sin duda alguna ese final te deja pensando y bastante debido al “gran” Plot Twist que tiene. Sobre todo porque la manera en la que toda la trama se ha desarrollado hasta ese punto. Digamos que todos los misterios y cosas raras que ocurren se revelan al final.

I really liked it, aside from the famous scene that happens right before the end, which also fascinated me quite a bit because of the appearance of that main antagonist who’s already familiar to fans of this series. I don’t think I need to mention his name for everyone to know who he is—or at least, for those who’ve already seen the movie. Let’s just say that scene was—for me personally—the most exciting part of the whole movie, not to mention that it had action and one plot twist after another that hooks you even more. There are things in this movie that surprise you, as well as other things that don’t surprise you as much because of the clear clues that were there from the start.
The film’s blend of comedy and romance mixes well with fantasy, suspense, and mystery. It strikes a good balance between all the elements, scenes, and moments in the film. The theme of magic is also presented in a fascinating way that both enchants and haunts anyone who watches it. This is because we see both sides of this magical world, whether through everything we see at Hogwarts or everything that happens with Voldemort and his Death Eaters. Another thing worth noting that really drew me in about this movie is the explanation of the “Unforgivable Curses” that exist.
Me gustó mucho, aparte de la famosa escena que ocurre justo antes del final que también me fascinó bastante debido a la aparición de dicho antagonista principal ya conocido en esta saga. Creo que no hace falta mencionar su nombre para que todos sepan quién es, o bueno, los que han visto ya la película. Digamos que esa escena fue -en lo personal- la más emocionante de toda la película, sin mencionar que tuvo hasta acción y un giro de trama tras otro que te engancha aún más. Hay cosas que te sorprenden en esta película, como otras cosas que no te sorprenden tanto debido a las claras señales que había desde el principio.
El ambiente tanto cómico como romántico que posee la película logra mezclarse bien con la fantasía, el suspenso y el misterio. Logra equilibrar bien cada cosa en su lugar, sus escenas y momentos en la película. El tema de la magia consigue también mostrarse de una manera fascinante y que logra tanto encantar como maldecir a cualquiera que lo vea. Esto debido a que vemos ambos lados de este mundo mágico, ya sea por todo lo que vemos en Hogwarts o todo lo que ocurre con Voldemort y sus Mortífagos. Otra cosa a destacar que me atrajo bastante de esta película es la explicación de las “Maldiciones Imperdonables” que existen.

Finally, though this is by no means less important than the rest, let’s now discuss the audiovisual aspects of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Directed this time by Mike Newell, this fourth installment of the series manages to maintain the dark and foreboding tone that Alfonso Cuarón established in the previous film. Although the color palette is warmer and more varied this time, it continues to use darker shades and shadowing in the sets and costumes. The film’s visual effects are also quite good, especially the use of CGI to design certain creatures and locations.
The makeup wasn’t bad either, especially during the Yule Ball, where we got to see a side of Hermione we’d never seen before. The use of static and moving cameras also changes a bit, though it strikes a perfect balance—especially when focusing our attention on specific details and characters in the film. The sound effects aren’t bad either; they even stand out very well in certain scenes from the Triwizard Tournament. The soundtrack also does an excellent job, heightening the excitement of every moment. Anyway, I’m recommending this Harry Potter movie so you can watch it too.
Personally, I give it a rating of 9.5/10 in terms of the fantasy, comedy, and action genres.
Ya para finalizar, pero no restándole menos importancia a lo demás, hablemos ahora del apartado audiovisual que tiene Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Esta vez dirigida por Mike Newell, esta cuarta entrega de la saga consigue mantener ese tono oscuro y tenebroso que nos dejó Alfonso Curarón en la entrega anterior. Aunque la paleta de colores esta vez es más cálida y variada, sigue utilizando estilos de sombra y tonalidades más oscuras entre los escenarios y las vestimentas. El trabajo de los efectos visuales que tiene la película tampoco está mal, sobre todo al usar el CGI para diseñar ciertas criaturas y lugares.
El maquillaje tampoco estuvo mal, sobre todo al momento del Baile de Navidad donde pudimos disfrutar de una visión de Hermione que nunca antes pudimos llegar a ver. El manejo de las cámaras fijas y en movimiento también cambia un poco, aunque consigue un equilibrio perfecto. Sobre todo al momento de enfocar nuestra atención a ciertos detalles y personajes en particular en la película. Los efectos de sonido tampoco están mal, incluso logran destacarse muy bien en ciertas escenas del Torneo de los Tres Magos. La banda sonora también hace un trabajo excelente, elevando la emoción de cada momento. En fin, les dejo esta película de Harry Potter para que también la vean.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9.5/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía, comedia y acción.
