Hace poco vi esta película sin haberme propuesto hacerlo, mi esposa estaba viéndola en Netflix y solo por acompañarla me quedé junto a ella pasando el rato; no tenía ninguna expectativa al respecto de la cinta, únicamente presuponía que se trataba de una más de esas comedias románticas que ella suele ver por las tardes y además debido al notorio contraste entre los tonos de piel de sus personajes, intuí que se abordaría el componente racial tan recurrente en Hollywood durante los últimos años. En efecto, el largometraje puede calificar como una comedia romántica, aunque en lo relativo al romance el relato es muy vago y el tipo de comedia es satírico, más que el acostumbrado humor absurdo de esa clase de historias, en cuanto al enfoque racial la trama toma un rumbo peculiar y por lo tanto estoy seguro que a algunas personas les resultará incómoda, creo que tiene puntos tanto negativos como positivos, pero hay algo que me parece destacable en su narrativa y por eso escribo este artículo, para comentar mí visión al respecto.
Algo que pronto llamó mi atención al comenzar a verla, fue la presencia en el reparto de Jonah Hill que interpreta a Ezra, el protagonista principal, Eddie Murphy que cumple el rol del padre de Amira la novia de Ezra y Julia Louis-Dreyfus que representa a la madre de Ezra. La actriz (Lauren London) que encarna a Amira no la conocía, a quienes si reconocí, aunque sin saberme sus nombres, fue a la actriz (Nia Long) que hace de madre de Amira, por haber participado en la serie “El príncipe del rap”, y al actor (David Duchovny) que hace de padre de Ezra, por su participación en “Los expedientes secretos X”. Respecto a las actuaciones todas me parecen correctas, unas más que otras, pero si algo me resultó digno de resaltar es que Eddie Murphy hace una interpretación bastante seria, lo que en su caso es poco común y personalmente fue algo que me gustó mucho.

Para iniciar debo decir que la traducción que se hizo del título para Latinoamérica , llamándola “Ustedes" y también la de España donde se le dio el nombre de “La gente como vosotros”, me parece un cambio inadecuado, no por el hecho en sí de ser una traducción no literal, ya que en algunas ocasiones sí que es necesario hacer ese tipo de modificaciones a los títulos, sino debido a que la expresión “Tu gente”, que creo debió ser el título utilizado en castellano, tiene una connotación racial muy profunda en la cultura estadounidense y por lo tanto representa muy bien el propósito de la película. Entiendo que se le haya querido dar un sentido más amplio e internacional al título, pero es que esta obra se centra puntualmente en la sociedad de EEUU y su conflictividad racial, por lo tanto, al verla no se debe establecer un análisis globalista de su mensaje, sino uno concreto a su ámbito local. En ese contexto, el nombre original de este largometraje, “You people”, constituye una declaración de intenciones sobre el tema a tratar en su argumentación.
La premisa de esta historia es simple y poco original, si tomamos en cuenta que es prácticamente un remake no acreditado del clásico de 1967 “Adivina quién viene esta noche”, que además ya tuvo otro remake en 2005 llamado “Adivina quién”. Todo se reduce a una pareja interracial de jóvenes enamorados, que se presentan mutuamente a sus respectivas familias y deben afrontar las dificultades que se producen a causa de los prejuicios que poseen sus seres queridos, los unos en contra de los otros. No obstante, creo que aun cuando no sea algo que no se haya visto antes, igual su concepto sigue siendo vigente en nuestros días, sobre todo si se le da un nuevo aire y una perspectiva un tanto diferente.

En estos tiempos cualquier propuesta cinematográfica que retrate a personas blancas cometiendo actos racistas es calificada como una obra profunda y reivindicativa, lo cual no digo que esté mal, pues es necesario hacer visible cualquier problemática social y contribuir desde el cine a que dejen de ocurrir cosas como esas, el detalle está en que la balanza no debería estar inclinada a ningún lado en particular, todo mensaje que conllevé a un mundo mejor y más tolerante, debería gozar de igual apoyo y aceptación.

El mensaje que puedo extraer de esta cinta, es que si bien puede aun existir en Estados Unidos racismo del tipo que yo llamaría “por odio”, es decir ese que poseen aquellas personas que realmente tienen la intención de causar daño a las personas de etnias distintas a la suya, por ejemplo el que ejercían los miembros del Ku Klux Klan y actualmente cualquier grupo supremacista blanco, también es cierto que la mayor parte de la sociedad ha dejado de lado ese tipo de posturas y ahora en particular los blancos, intentan de alguna manera desligarse del daño causado por sus antepasados, por lo que presentan un comportamiento condescendiente con las personas negras e incurriendo en lo que podríamos calificar como una forma de racismo “por inconciencia", debido a que intentando agradar a los negros, pueden terminar incomodándolos, tal como lo muestra la película con la interacción entre la madre del protagonista y su novia. Vemos como esta señora blanca se esfuerza por agradar a la chica negra y su familia, pero consigue el efecto contrario al que desea.
Por su parte, los personajes de raza negra en su mayoría muestran una actitud a la que personalmente calificaría como racismo “por resentimiento”, que estaría en un grado inferior por supuesto al tipo de racismo "por odio" que presentan los supremacistas blancos, pero que me parece mucho más nocivo y reprochable que el modo de racismo que inconcientemente y por condescendencia pueden exhibir los blancos. Para mí, el largometraje denuncia de forma sobria y sincera ambos tipos de racismo, mostrándole a los blancos que un exceso de indulgencia puede ser incómodo y hasta ofensivo, pero también le dice directamente a los negros, que ejercer el racismo por resentimiento social e histórico, no contribuye para nada a la desaparición total del racismo, pues es necesario pasar página y hacer de la sociedad actual, una en la que no tenga importancia si alguien es blanco o negro, sino únicamente su condición de ser humano.
Debido a ese mensaje que personalmente me parece tan valioso, pues creo que la película retrata fielmente un aspecto muy contemporáneo de la sociedad estadounidense y en especial de la cultura afroamericana, con el fin de exponer una realidad de la que pocas veces se hace mención en otras obras audiovisuales, aun tratándose de una comedia no muy divertida, mi calificación para You People es de 6.5 / 10.
