If you are recurring movie consumers you will know that way back in 2017 Sony Pictures Animations put out a Razzie winning film for worst animated movie of the year. I honestly remembered it as a fun movie and made it a point to re-watch it from a more critical point of view than I had five years ago to see if it was as bad as they said it was and here's my review.

Let's start from the idea that I'm the kind of person who loves the animation genre because it's light and entertaining, fun and relaxing. From the colors to the beautiful feelings a character can give you. So I've always believed that there are two ways to look at animation: A) from a critical point and B) from a family point where you can be entertained without much worry.
Emoji is a total 50/50 in that respect for me.
Of the animation almost nothing was judged because it sticks pretty much to the so called "Pixar style", it's something we already knew and that in itself is nothing innovative but it works pretty well with its vibrant colors and expressions.
The characters were talked about a lot, because they are the typical trio of "the guy who is different and has to go on a journey to discover that it's okay to be different", "the funny and sometimes silly friend" and "the smart girl who leads". I have no problem seeing this scheme in film because it has worked countless times, but I do support the critic who says that there are some of them that are flat. For example, Jailbreak, a female character who was intended to be feminist and liberating but only spouts lines and in the end gives up her dreams for Gene. She doesn't end up being consistent.
Critics hated Hive-5 who was the focus of the comedy in the film. And I have to say, I did laugh a lot. Sorry. I'm the kind of person who thinks there are jokes that are so goofy that they get a laugh. The comedy in the movie overall is basic and very "American" but it does its job of making you laugh.
On the plot and the advertising within the movie, negative reviews kept coming in. The plot does have some holes, but it is an animated movie about emoticons, many things are sometimes left unexplained and are not really deep for the plot. I do think that in many cases (like Candy Crush) they could have used characters from that world to make the world inside the phone deeper and not solve it with a literal game. Otherwise, it seems normal to me that applications only appear in one phone.
Emoji Movie for me is a fun movie, with references that you can laugh at and that is a very good movie to pass the time and forget a little overthinking. I understand that the critics do not think it is the animation of the year, but it fulfills its function and it is also quite healthy for children. It is a work that I would definitely watch again and enjoy just as much.

Partamos de la idea de que soy el tipo de persona que ama el género animación porque es ligero y entretenido, divertido y relajante. Desde los colores hasta las sensaciones bonitas que puede causarte un personaje. Así que siempre he creído que hay dos formas de ver la animación: A) desde un punto crítico y B) desde un punto familiar donde te puedes entretener sin mucha preocupación.

De la animación no se juzgó casi nada porque se apega bastante al llamado “estilo Pixar”, es algo que ya conocíamos y que en sí mismo no es nada innovador pero funciona bastante bien con sus colores vibrantes y expresiones.
De los personajes sí que se habló un montón, porque son el típico trío de “el chico que es diferente y tiene que hacer un viaje para descubrir que está bien serlo”, “el amigo gracioso y a veces tonto” y “la chica inteligente que lidera”. Yo no tengo problemas en ver este esquema en el cine porque ha funcionado infinidad de veces, pero sí apoyo a la crítica que dice que hay alguno de ellos que están planos. Por ejemplo, Jailbreak, un personaje femenino que tenía intención de ser feminista y liberador pero que solo soltaba frases sueltas y que al final deja sus sueños por Gene. No termina de ser consistente.
La crítica odió a Hive-5 que fue el foco de la comedia en la película. Y debo decir que yo sí me reí un montón. Lo siento. Soy el tipo de persona que piensa que hay chistes tan bobos que dan risa. La comedia de la película en general es básica y muy “americana” pero logra su cometido de hacerte reír.
Sobre la trama y la publicidad dentro de la película no dejaron de caer críticas negativas. La trama sí tiene algunos huecos, pero es una película animada sobre emoticones, muchas cosas quedan a veces sin explicar y no son realmente profundas para la trama. Sí pienso que en muchos casos (como el de Candy Crush) pudieron hacer uso personajes de ese mundo para hacer que el mundo dentro del teléfono fuese más profundo y no resolverlo con una partida literalmente. De resto, me parece normal que aplicaciones solamente aparezcan en un teléfono.
Emoji Movie para mí es una película divertida, con referencias de las que te puedes reír y que es muy buena película para pasar el rato y olvidarte un poco de sobrepensar. Entiendo que a la crítica no le parezca la animación del año pero cumple su función y además es bastante sana para el público infantil. Es una obra que sin duda volvería a ver y disfrutaría igual.
