Honestly, I knew absolutely nothing about this show. I thought it would be the typical cowboy story— horses and staring into the sunset—but not at all. I started watching it because of the hype and because Kevin Costner is in it, but I ended up hooked because of how twisted this family is. They’re like the Murdaughs, but with 100 times the budget and zero scruples.
Kevin Costner plays John Dutton and, sincerely, he is a despicable guy. He’s the typical patriarch who thinks owning half of Montana gives him the right to be judge, jury, and executioner. He’s arrogant, manipulative, and keeps his children in a state of constant trauma just to "protect the legacy." The guy doesn’t love anyone; he only loves his land.
What impressed me most was seeing how these people operate. They think they’re kings in a town where nobody dares to cough in their direction because they’re the ones with the money and the connections:
- Beth Dutton: She’s a psychopath; there’s no other word for it. She’s brilliant, yes, and she commands the screen, but she’s a toxic person who enjoys destroying others. Every time she opens her mouth, it’s to humiliate someone.
- The sons: One is a coward who only wants his father to tell him "good job," and the other tries to be a good person while burying bodies for the family. It’s pathetic and fascinating at the same time.
- It blows my mind to see how they commit crimes in broad daylight while the police look the other way because "they’re the Duttons." It’s that gritty realism of how power actually works.
"In that house, you don't eat dinner; you negotiate betrayals. If you aren't useful to the ranch, you aren't family."
The show is slow at times and occasionally over-dramatic, but visually, it’s a masterpiece. It’s completely immersive. I watched it because I wanted to see how it ended, and I finished it hating every single one of them—which says a lot about how good the performances are.
It’s not a masterpiece, but if you like stories about powerful people who think they’re above the law while their personal lives are trash, give it a shot. Just be prepared to want to slap almost every character.

Lo que más me impresionó fue ver cómo funciona esta gente. Se creen reyes en un pueblo donde nadie se atreve a toserles porque son los que tienen el dinero y los contactos:
- Beth Dutton: Es una psicópata, no hay otra palabra. Es brillante, sí, y se come la pantalla, pero es una persona tóxica que disfruta destruyendo a los demás. Cada vez que abre la boca es para humillar a alguien.
- Los hijos: El uno es un cobarde que solo busca que su padre le diga "buen trabajo" y el otro intenta ser buena persona mientras entierra cadáveres para la familia. Es patético y fascinante a la vez.
- Me revienta ver cómo cometen crímenes a plena luz del día y la policía mira para otro lado porque "son los Dutton". Es ese realismo sucio de cómo funciona el poder de verdad.
"En esa casa no se cena, se negocian traiciones. Si no eres útil para el rancho, no eres de la familia."
La serie es lenta a ratos y a veces se pasan de dramáticos, pero visualmente es una joya. Te hace sentir inmersión. La vi porque quería saber cómo terminaba y terminé odiándolos a todos, lo cual dice mucho de lo buenas que son las actuaciones.
No es una obra maestra, pero si te gustan las historias de gente poderosa que se cree por encima de la ley mientras su vida personal es una basura, dale una oportunidad. Eso sí, prepárate para querer darle un bofetón a casi todos los personajes.
